The CTA is a good public transit system in a country that doesn’t value public transit. It could definitely use some improvements, but people should also give it a little grace.
The diagonal streets and the tracks that go directly on top of busy streets downtown like Wabash and Lake… as someone who’s blind that has to rely on listening to traffic patterns to cross safely These outliers really screw things up and make things dangerous in some cases. We obviously have bigger issues, but it would be nice if we had a few more talking traffic lights…
Man. you hit like almost my pain points, and I've been living here for 40+ years. You didn't mention that you increase your risk to life riding on the CTA. There are so many random people with problems that pose a risk to your life
I get that it can feel that way and it’s a shame that it isn’t better. However, the statistics don’t bear that out. Riding in cars is much much more likely to result in maiming or death than a transit ride for the same distance traveled. Driving feels safer because you’re in control of your vehicle but you aren’t in control of every other vehicle passing by a few feet away at high speeds. Tons of drivers are distracted by phones and drunk driving is encouraged by our built environment and social norms. Driving has been the leading cause of death for 2-26 year olds for a long time but our society does not take it seriously.
Chicago is a big city with bigger assholes. The cta decides to put the middle finger to me. Did doordash downtown almost got ranover on my bike at least 6 times now. Keep getting checked outside the fucking pinkline. And ofc you wont find a good meal under 10 now........I fucking love it here😊
If you like city living, Chicago is one of the top in the US. All cities have problems. Some of the earliest known writing from Sumeria and Babylon talked about problems with the city. Condé Nast voted Chicago best city in the US for the last seven years.
CTA isnt perfect but it gets me to and from work successfully every day and im thankful that I am one of the few americans that can experience this.

What I find annoying is there are no north south L lines west of downtown.

Current CTA is a disappointment
We could be world class if we operated our current system well and did a few expansions

Why bother? There are plenty of better places to live and work.
