Hood River 2024 Part 1 | The Road Trip
It's Hood River time again. Only this time we had to change plans due to the smoke in the Chehalis and in the Columbia Gorge area making it difficult to see the rising terrain. This is a view of what we attempted to fly through and made the decision to return to PAE and make alternate plans.

I came into this spinner from an estate sale that had a Stinson with spare parts (I got the spare parts not the airplane). I didn't get the fitment correct and it started to crack. I thought I would use the spinner to pattern a mold for a composite spinner. with the approval needing approval I desired to repair the old one once and for all.

Oil Leaks | Repairs before Upcoming Cross-country flights
As a student, right after my solo. I did exactly the same thing. I am so glad you shared this so that it can help others. On that approach, I felt the stall spin start and, thankfully, I went aileron neutral and nose down immediately. I didn't think about it. Apparently, it was just instinctual from stall training. I was so thankful when I was on the ground. It did rattle me a bit though and some say that I am still maybe overly cautious on landing. This was the best video. It visually showed me what I felt that day. Thank you for sharing.
I've had a couple other moments, but this was right up there. We all become better when we tell our tales. I'm fortunate enough to have filmed it.
You only regret the decisions you didn't make.
Very true.
Tough decision but good job
Not that tough when you think about what could have happened.
ADM, always best to be conservative and live to fly another day. Great Call!
Thanks, Think to fly another day.
I have a Stinson 108 with 150 hp. Franklin where did you send your cylinder to be repaired?
Since Airworx got out of the Franklin business, I currently do not have a shop. You can contact Susan Prall at Franklin Engines in Jewett Tx, Franklin Aircraft Engines in Ft. Collins Co or Franklin Aerospace in Thomasville, NC.
@@FreedomfixerFlying thank you
All those signs of where to go, they know pilots too well
It's the route ATC cleared us for....
The control tower tour at Pearl harbor was actually quite enjoyable when i visited. That turquoise water!
That's a great idea. I have gone up in the tower at Paine, but I only wished there was more time to do that.
Wouldn’t you need to drain the tappets in order to accurately check the rocker arm clearance?
That is what the tool does, It depresses the rocker. And there is a small hole in the lifter where their escapes.
Great video, sir! Thank you for posting this. It takes guts to admit when you made a mistake but you recovered and made it out in one piece. Well done👍
Not one of my best productions, but it got the message across. Thanks for the comment.
Just did mine went from .85 to .07, what a difference! Under .08 is what the are shooting for and under .05 is fantastic from what i heard
Wow that's a big drop! I even noticed the difference from .43 to .19. We tried and tried and got as low as .19 IPS. We were just chasing the weights around.
@@FreedomfixerFlying look at the balance master. Smooths all ranges of rpm.

It's looks great without a spinner. The 108 just doesn't like spinners
I beg to differ. I like the spinner look. The way this spinner was designed, without reinforcement around the cut-outs is why they crack so often.
Looks battle tested now
It does. But I picked up several knots. And Im sure the motor likes the additional airflow.
I'm always amazed by the metal work, something I have never tried. Thanks for sharing!

Iam 82 now and live in Idaho and learned to fly and in the back country of Idaho . loved it ai had a few planes 1ft a 172 then a 1882 then we bought a new 182 for 60.000 dollers then a 180 then a 185 then 206 . but my last one was a old 180 and leaned to fly it and you get so you can just feel it . thanks love your videos. We livr in Idaho by Homedale on our kids farm . i LOVED FLYING .. keep it up.
Will do, Thanks for sharing your memories.
Oh wow! That’s my friend’s 172 that he just sold to George’s aviation, and also the other “famous” 172 N490NW. These aircraft were flown 18+ hours from CA using a special ferry tank and they were well over gross. Both 172s lived in Bellingham (KBLI) and the 172 you flew was their personal aircraft for the past few years and has many very special memories attached to it. Glad to see a friend flying it in Hawaii, they’ll also be glad to see you enjoying it. Incidentally, you flooded her on the startup, that 172 always starts smooth, other than that thanks for sharing and glad you enjoyed a wonderful vacation!
Honestly it as been forever since I started a fuel injected motor. Was trying to read and do at the same time. It didn't help that the both of us tried to operate the controls and the I held the starter too long. I'm used to the "key" in my right hand.
My bride and I loved our fly time when in Maui. You sure had a windy day! Thanks for the ride along, it's beautiful.
Did you film any of your flight? I'll be sure to do this again the next time I go.
Love this !!!!!!! Definitely a bucket list highlight to fly in Hawaii…
Defiantly call ahead, and it helps to have a flexible schedule.
18:50 those damn cyclists always so noisy in the morning causing issues and waking people up!
It was OK until he wend full afterburner!
That airplane looks a little nervous in time lapse
Lol, she does...
Great video. Hopefully the wx is good around the first of September. I’m planning on flying up that way to CLM form southeast Az. I may be relocating for work to the Olympic Peninsula.
September still has some flying days, or should I say afternoons...
Just bought a 2013 s60 t6 with 150k miles for $2,500. Had a check engine light on with 3 o2 sensor codes. Guy wanted $5,500 for it, but when I asked about the codes he said the light came on 2 years ago and his daughter has been driving it like that ever since. That's the reason I was able to talk him down to $2,500 - because I wasn't sure if the cat was plugged up. The car ran great - super smooth, perfectly balanced as you would expect - but it was running extremely rich and definitely felt sluggish. Well, I replaced both o2 sensors and the codes stayed off, but performance was still pretty bad. But rather than replacing the cat with a cheap aftermarket alternative, I just made sure to red line the engine a few times a day on the highway. And after about 2 weeks, she's running about 75% better, which is good enough for me. So long story short - change your o2 sensors. This guy lost $3,000 because he didn't
God call. That CAT is most defiantly gone. When these sensors go out the computer goes full rich! That plugs them up.
I just subscribed because I am currently working on my Private Pilot Certificate and KCLS is my home airport. I will have to look around for your plane next time I am flying in 61J.
I'll keep an ear out for that call sign, looking forward to it.
Nice video! I like the camera preflight technique, that's a good one I haven't heard before. Some things I've learned: on the ground, also pay attention to peripheral sight picture, as your peripherals will give you a lot of information during landing if you learn how to interpret it. I had the same issue with rolls on a point. A different technique is to look out the side window and watch the wing go forward and back, and you can use the rudder to counter the forward/backward motion and make the wing travel vertically in a straight line. I found this method much easier to grasp than looking out the front at first, and then once I got the feel for it, I could do it well looking over the nose. I hope that helps, keep up the great flying!
Thanks for sharing that bit on the wing. There a lot going on in a Dutch roll. The nose kind of makes an elliptical path as everything catches up.
You may want to ditch the music. I love to hear ATC, You and the engine.
I can honestly say the music gives the video life. You're not hearing it the way I do during the edit. Additionally in flight the wind noise is so awful that there needs to be something to fill that void when I turn the gain down.
SUPER! Filally flew without an engine, but I couldn’t hear how gently the variometer sings
Awesome! Glad to hear it.
Pronunciation correction: Neh-hay-lem Bay
Copy that. I know it easy it is to mispronounce our towns names around here. Funny I just corrected someone on Alki today, I should know better...lol. I'll be sure to mention the correction in a later video.
Great video. I’m looking at moving back to the northwest from Arizona not sure I want to give up the year round flying but the wife wants water. It is gorgeous though.
Oh wow you dug deep into the library. Glad you watched this one. Have you seen the entire playlist? Except for Oshkosh, this trip was one of my most memorable ones. The Peninsula is great. Port Angeles and Sequim have more days of sun in the winter than all of western Washington due to what is known as the "rain shadow"
I passed a sign in Enumclaw today saying "glider rides" and now I'm here 😂
That's awesome, did you go for a glider ride?
Solid video! I think the most safety critical thing is figuring out how to take the cameras out of the equation as much as possible while flying, as you explained wonderfully. Still trying to figure out my own setup in terms of utilizing battery packs and trying to figure out cooling. It's also a little more difficult for me since I don't own my own aircraft and constantly have to flex between airplanes.
That's a tough spot to be in. I can only suggest suction cups for the cabin and if on a high wing removable mounts from NFlight.
love the content brother, when is the Great Carnac coming back?
@@blacksheep933 LOL, I'll put that on request.
Wow! This was fascinating to watch, and very informative. Thanks for sharing this cool experience!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That Franklin is sounding good at idle
It sounds just as good in person. The Audio is from the inside cameras!
Hey man, love what you're doing! I'm starting to glide too, do you have any camera advices you could give me ?
My first suggestion is to NOT make the camera #1. Flying is your highest priority. Filming takes a backseat. The position of the camera should be out of the way, yet have a view that looks good. I didn't have much time to set up in this glider. If you can take some time on the ground, try test shooting in different locations. I asked first and was allowed to use suction cups. However never leave a suction cup on plexiglass in the sun. It will heat up and leave a mark on the window or canopy. This topic should get its own video. Glad you asked.
@@FreedomfixerFlying Hey thanks man for those tips, I really appreciate it!
Great tips, would like to see more maintenance content. Back when I worked on a fleet of flight school Citabrias I would hang all eight sparkplug gaskets on a piece of welding rod and heat and quench them all at once.
Thank you, I've gotten good feed back on these kinds. I'm working on a Sheetmetal video. There will be a fabric covering one after that.
Hi Freedomfixer I also have a 1948 Cessna 170 since 1995 and counting. My question is do you have a fuel pump in your 48 170. I live in Canada and my new AME says that the 48 170’s need a fuel pump. So I’m researching this claim🤷♂️
Since I do not own this airplane I had to do some digging. According to the Type Certificate A-799 (please feel free to look this up for yourself). Under the engine and accessory section for the straight 170, item 104 is a fuel pump (Cont. No. 40585). The 170A and 170B do not have a fuel pump. I would congratulate your maintainer for finding this.
Just to give you a hard time, but that face at the intro looks like the creepy guy offering kids candy to get in their car at an elementary school 😂. Also, thank you for the video.
What!? That's my serious face! I'll work on being less creepy. Lol, great roast. Glad you enjoyed it.

49 108-3. O-435/Hartzell prop combo. Looks good from about 100’ feet out. First 55 hrs flown by Howard Piper as a demonstrator to sell the remaining planes. Great channel. Thanks!!
Thanks for following along. I have a friend who had one of the first Franklin powered Pipers that Piper flew well.
Good stuff. I have a '46 straight-108 with the Franklin 6A4-150-B3, based on a private airpark west of Bremerton. My wife and I are in central BC, having been on our way to Alaska last week when we lost a cylinder and diverted 50 mi to a small airport. Turned out to be a broken intake rocker arm on the #5 cylinder - this is one of the early 150s that used stamped rocker arms vs the later 150s & 165s that used forged. Valve wasn't stuck, pushrod not bent, rocker arm showed polishing along the crack line which makes me think it developed over a while. I was able to source a replacement rocker arm only 90 mi away, but the mechanic who brought & installed it isn't familiar with Franklins, and we had a hell of a time getting the lifter depressed on the exhaust valve side to get the clearance set correctly (granted, without your handy tool). We got it close enough and I flew to his shop, engine ran slightly rough at times. This morning he made up a better tool and was able to depress the lifter enough to set the .040 clearance correctly, and on test flight engine ran much smoother. Curious if you've seen much variability between your various lifters. I'm wondering if this one being so stiff is due to being gummed up with carbon or whatever, and if this might impact oil delivery to the rocker arms. Maybe hastened the failure? Above aside, we decided not to continue north to Alaska. Engine only has 100 hrs SMOH and the failure gives me qualms about taking it anywhere too remote until it's proven this is a one-off.
As with most older aircraft and engines it's a risk you taking flying an older vintage aircraft on a long trip. Even after an Overhaul I always prefer to fly as many hours as possible. I am a very big proponent of Mike Busch's philosophy of proof of operation ( If it ain't broke, don't fix it ). If you have got to the trouble of finding that rocker you no doubt ave looked at the others. If you are that far intern Overhaul I would be less worried than if you had say 20 or 25. By the 100th mark most of the egregious errors pop up as you have noted. That should be some reassurance. As for the lifters, there are a couple different styles. The Stinson Franklins share a lot in common with the Helicopter motors. Some of those internal parts are interchangeable and some are not. As I understand the 2 styles I have seen are interchangeable, I have both in Shelia. I ask that question early on with Susan @FranklinEngines , and she assured me that they were. Regularly checking those clearances ( 200 hours is the interval ) will keep your engine purring. I hope that you have agreeable weather and have a safe journey. Christopher
9:53 is where a turn with a stall is about to start.
Indeed, Its just as disturbing to see today as it was back then. 450 hours have passed since that flight.
Very awesome of you to share this. I don't fly anymore as I'm not medically fit. However, when I was flying my biggest fear was the stall/spin base to final. Because I had an instructor who preached constantly to me the need of identifying the imaginary extended runway line, my bank angles would never exceed 30 degrees and never a turn back to runway situation. Your quick and correct reaction saved your life!!!
Sounds like a good instructor. I don't panic if I over shoot the final, I just correct from the other side.
@@FreedomfixerFlying Amen to that! I so miss flying but, all things do pass. Safe and enjoyable flying to you sir. Your shared coffin corner experience has certainly open the eyes of many a pilot, I'm sure. Blessings to you for that!!!

My apologies , I don't recognize your tag name. Where were we when we talked?
@@FreedomfixerFlying I was at one of the booths which was an airport
Curious how you dealt with non-PMA and or field approval; for these?
First of all this is not a major change to the TCDS and does not require field approval. Secondly this falls under hardware where no PMA is required. Hardware not only falls under Vintage Aircraft Replacement and Modification Article (VARMA) program, additionally guidance is given under AC 23-27 - Parts and Materials Substitution for Vintage Aircraft.
