I think both Autobot’s and Decepticon’s had the same concerns and opinions regarding the corruption of Cybertron’s society. The only real difference is how they wanted to handle it.

I think at first Megatron was misunderstood, but over time through wars and hatred, especially on the subject of primes, he grew to be quite a psychopath and despise Optimus Prime.

Megatron does have a Reason as how Corrupt Governments are but later he becomes what he Hates and the Reason he’s so blind to it is because he Selfishly Believes he’s the Only One who can Trust Himself and is a Control Freak who can Dominate Others as the Righteous Thing to do No Matter the Cost.

Massive thing though. The entire idea of oh, bringing freedom to the masses is a great concept to start with but the method Megatron chose was absolutely not a good one. He was more akin to a communist or a third position where they wanted to destroy everything that was already built, damn the long reaching consequences of that and then somehow create a better utopia. This is literally how all communist revolutions start and end because they never get to the utopia because killing off an entire section of the population and destroying the governmental apparatus shows you have no regard for anything besides your own way. It quickly leads to the Authoritarian despotism seen under Megatron where you have to fall in line or you die. It quickly leads to new subsections of former supporters finding you to be an extremist and not actually following the original good plan that you had even though I argue that any plan that involves a violent uprising and removal of the status quote is flawed at its core and proven not to work for long term stability, suddenly then either trying to overthrow you or you then kill all of them. Its why while having a point, Megatron went the completely wrong way of doing that and that's why Orion Pax' way of gradual change within a system that was receptive to change, because if it wasn't he wouldn't have become Prime in many canons, is the better way. Its why the governments of many democratic societies work far better, especially towards making change without mass uprisings because its gradual change and its change predicated within a system of checks and balances that keep things from going too far one way or another.

I've always subscribed to the idea that the war for Cybertron didn't happen for no reason, that while Megatron was evil he and the deceptions aren't evil just for the sake of being evil, pre Optimus Prime Autobots did some questionable things and I think you made a damn good point with your hypothetical scenario of if WE were Cybertronian and our leaders worked us half to death without a share of the energon well... I wanna see how many people who think the cons are just evil would remain loyal to the Autobots and for how long, my position in the matter?, I would side with Megatron right away then switch sides like half way through the war maybe a little bit later or whenever it becomes clear the Megatron I swore loyalty to was gone.

It started from the right place. Sadly for their cause, Megatron made few critical mistakes in almost every continuity. 1. He always saw himself as the most suited for leader position. Everyone who thinks to be better candidate can stand against him and fight for that right. 2. He isn't willing to listen or wait. Current leaders need to be dealt with yesterday. No plea, just justice for the cause. 3. The moment Optimus Prime stood against Megatron, Decepticon cause became secondary priority. Optims must be destroyed first and every resource available will be used to fight with him.

It depends a lot on the continuity. At least in some of them, Megatron and Optimus fight in the civil war against the system together and reach the point where they can set it us fairly, but then Megatron decides that he has to be in charge. In these continuity, it's basically two wars back to back, with the first usually justified and the second one absolutely not.

Megatron was originally just evil in the original series I think, but with time and many adaptations his character has evolved and changed becoming something so much more. He has lost his way, but he was a good bot starting off fighting against corruption and evil that the primes and the council had become. So yes, he has several good points and lets face it neither the decepticons or autobots are without blame. Both sides have done very messed up things. Like it became a crime to be a decepticon punishable by death. I remember that the wreckers or maybe it was the dino bots wiped out an entire settlement of non-combatants just because they had the decepticon brand.

Can we just talk about how sad transformers prime Megatrons end is? By taking the blood of Unicron he can never ever go to his afterlife he will never see the well of allsparks. And if he dies again his afterlife is eternal torture in Unicron's hell. Him being brought back to life is just a bandage the second he runs out of energon in his self banishment that's him eternal hell awaits. His life now will just be him constantly mining energon to avoid Unicron's eternal punishment. And him mining for the rest of his life is exactly what he was fighting against to begin with. Him fighting for his freedom ended with him trapping himself in servitude.

Megatrons road to hell starts with good intentions but he keeps going down the path more and more till eventually he perverts the very cause he created and his goals shift form freedom to complete control and destruction of anyone who stands in his way let’s not forget he created the DJD and the phase sixer cons literally made to genocide whole worlds he’s evil incarnate and CAN never be redeemed

Even Optimus agreed with Megatron at one point but like alot of people, Megatron went too far.

i think megatron in most media, even in transformers one, especially even is a good example of the ends not justifying the means. he wanted a better future, and a better world, but the wayhe went about that became corrupted and warped until that was hardly even what he was after anymore

Honestly, I think that's one of the main reasons why Megatron has endured as the franchise's primary antagonist for so long. Once you ignore all the cosmic threats, prophecy ,alternate universes etc. The main conflict has always been the tragedy that the cycle of violence creates. It all goes back to the fact that, once upon a time, there was a point to the war. Now, war IS the point for Megatron and he took everyone else down that road with him. Its also why I appreciate IDW exploring him actually looking inward and switching teams upon realising that he really did see *himself* as a monster who genuinely *enjoyed* hurting people; and that it shook him to his core.

The Decepticons are consistently more powerful and have far superior engineering, only due to militant ruling and the depletion of Energon from other worlds. Peace through tyranny, all needs are met under 1 person. Autobots are much weaker and are mostly comprised of civilians, they care much more about life of each other. Freedom is the right of all sentient beings. Decepticons are sadistic murderers and most of them won’t change regardless, the Autobots are corruptible if the voice of the many overwhelms the needs of the few, thus why the Decepticons came to be. Regardless of which side you take, you’ll much prefer an Autobot society just due to the lack of murdering.

how i always thought about was Optimus being the reformer and Megatron being the revolutionary, both wanting the same thing but doing things differently to get there. at least in the idw comics

I view Megatron in the same sense in a way I view Lucifer Morningstar from genesis. Both had great plans and ambitions but ultimately fell from grace in pride and hubris.

I feel as though Megatron and Optimus both saw the bad sides of the Cybertronian government but, both wanted to change it in different ways. Megetron effectively became a "Ends justify the means" while Optimus was and always will be "Ends to not justify the means" I'm personally more aligned with Megatron's line of thinking, sometimes a firm hand is needed in order to get people to listen and understand. Of course, I probably wouldn't see fit to go as far as Megatron has.

Megatron was correct in that there was injustice however his reaction was "It's my turn to hold the whip." Megatron wanted power and he used the suffering of his past as justification to get it.

I’m just putting it, but Orion Pax was never a High Class bot, he was a low class bot like Megatron but not a lower class bot. Orion was at best a middle class bot, so he knew that the system had its problems but it also had its merits.

In a lot of cases it was seen that optimus prime cares more about earth than about his own home world..Megatron however only cares about cybertron..his means intentions weren't bad is just that his means of achieving it were wrong

I think the version of Megatron who has the best leg to stand on in terms of being justified is the Bayverse Megatron. Optimus Prime has actively done stuff that hinders Cybertron over and over. He destroyed the Allspark after he launched it into space in the first place, he destroyed the Starharvester which would given them enegron to survive(obviously bad for humans and Eatrh, but as a Cybertronian, this would been potentially a good thing for your survival.), he destroyed the beacons which damaged Cybertron even further in Dark of the moon. Optimus always sides with Earth and Humanity over the his own race and planet. I can see other other Decepticons would see him as a traitor for this. Megatron typically goes too far as he eventually becomes about himself and his own power not the movement. You see this in Revenge of the Fallen, as he tells Starscream there is no command but mine even in death. He wants them to honor him even if he dies, despite him discarding his followers like trash when they fall. (And having one of his followers ripped apart to rebuild him even though was tons parts laying around to use of dead guys when the Doctor rebuilds him, but this is to showcase their ruthlessness, not their sense of reason.) Megatron is a patriot of Cybertron, but his methods go too far, and whatever point he had usually is lost along the way. The Decepticons were originally supposed to be the army and protectors of Cybertron, and the Autobots were the ones who were there to support them as both were better equipped to do the job they were designed for. The issue is, the Decepticons need something to fight, and there's why Primes like Nova Prime would have them fighting and conquering other planets to expand the empire and keep them from getting bored. The Decepticons just aren't meant to live in peace, they aren't wired for it. Having them fight something was how you keep them from turning on you. When Cybertron turned to be isolationist in many versions, the great war was doomed to happen, as Megatron was merely a spark for this anger to be directed at anything right or wrong. Most Cons are just looking serve their purpose, and aren't terrible concerned with morality as they can't be as soldiers. You see this come thru when they merge into combiners, they just are engines of destruction since that is what is the primary trait that they are united in despite many of the teams having some intelligent parts in the mix. (Such as onslaught and most of the Constructicons.) In G1 after the Cons banished the Quintessons, it was only matter of time before they needed a new target to fight. The Autobots became the next target.
