It seems to me that"MaA" is the visual equivalent of the way a lot of Dylan's songs like "Stuck Inside of Mobile" or "Gates of Eden." Wild, evocative images juxtaposed next to each other which may or may not have much relation to what proceeds or follows. I personally like the movie. It's better than "Renaldo and Clara."

Thanks for this. Masked and Anonymous is a dazzling work of genius and wit, social commentary and political metaphysics. Its reception -- its non-reception -- by movie-land and movie-land's comatose legions is a damning commentary on the zombie state of American culture at large -- gagged with money, drugged with lies, "distracted from distraction by distraction." You know something's happening, but you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Money.

It's true that Dylan stayed in costume and wandered around the streets during breaks in filming. A friend of mine worked on the project, and told me that one day during lunch in East LA(?), he saw him in a tiny music shop, talking to the proprietor about an accordion they had for sale or some such. From what my friend could determine, she seemed to have no idea who he was.

I have watched this film quite a few times over the years, and really I think it's a good film. Many of the lines I find really interesting, the passages in the films I find really interesting, and over the years have appreciated different parts of the film. Recently watching it again, the part when Jack Fate goes into the hotel, the music, the lighting, the bus.. the scene in the hotel, the dialogue and how it is delivered, there is a rhythm and a kind of music to it. I watched the three or four minutes back about five times. A lot of different parts of the film I find are like this. They can be watched as little glimpses of mysterious place, that seems out of time, of no time, but at the same time seems new and could be happening now. I suppose in a way I often watch Bob Dylan films in a similar way that I naturally listen to his songs. Similar with Renaldo & Clara. I would really like to watch a clear version of Renaldo & Clara, how it originally was. I would be interested what Larry Charles thought about that film. I was interested to listen to these interviews though (I wanted this to be longer!).. Larry Charles talking about 'reading Bob Dylan's words' at the start of the film. "I'm acting Bob Dylan's words.. that was immediately one of the most exciting things I've ever done" .. I really liked that part. The live performances are filmed really well I think. I have seen one interview with Larry Charles where he mentioned how he got a lot more performances filmed. I hope that these are saved somewhere, and will be released someday!.. Best wishes, nm.

Fully agree about all this. The monologue in the bus is brilliant writing. The business in the background where the Pope cops a feel off the groupie is hilarious, fun satire, the pre-teen drilled to sing Times They Are A-Changing and her master-sergeant stage mother ... the vignette with Jack Fate's mother and the guitar ... this movie is a treasure. I saw both original theater releases of Renaldo and Clara and thought the first, longer version was better, but both amazing. There's more footage, unused in these (I think), in Scorsese's documentary. I'd like to see the first longer version released onto the internet.

Unfortunately, this is only partially correct -- Woody's version of "Buffalo Skinners" does NOT contain the funny (spoken) part which Noel "Paul" Stookey correctly remembers as being the likely "model" for Dylan's own "Story Of East Orange", of which a recording exists on the December 22, 1961, tape recorded at Bonnie Beecher's apartment in Minneapolis, MN. This spoken part probably originates from a recording by The Almanac Singers, "State Of Arkansas" (Lee Hays, lead vocal, Woody Guthrie, guitar, vocal, Pete Seeger, banjo, vocal, Millard Lampell & Peter Hawes, vocals), recorded July 07, 1941 at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, and released as part of "Sod-Buster Ballads" as General 5019-A. "Then I got me a job on a farm. But I didn't like the work, nor the food, nor the farmer, nor his wife, nor none of his children. So I went up to him one day and I told him, ""Mister, I'm quittin' this job, and you can just pay me off right now."" He says to me, ""OK, son, if that's the way you feel about it."" And he handed me a mink skin. I told him, I said, ""Hell, brother, I don't want this thing, I want my money."" He says to me, says, ""Son, that's what we use for currency down here in Arkansas."" So I took it and I headed for a saloon to see if I could get me a pint of drinkin' whisky. Put my mink skin on the bar, and durned if the bartender didn't throw me a pint. An' he picked up my mink skin, and he blowed the hair back on it, and he handed me three 'possum hides and fourteen rabbit skins for change..." www.lyrics.com/.../The+Almanac.../State+of+Arkansas

I wonder if Dylan also found inspiration for "Blowin' in the Wind" from a song called, "I Really Don't Want to Know." It was written by Don Robertson and Howard Barnes in 1953. Eddy Arnold had a #1 Country hit with it in 1954. Lyrically, and at least in a small way melodically, it suggests that Dylan may have used it as a model for the "How many..." questions that dominate the lyrics of his "Blowin' in the Wind." Take a listen ruclips.net/video/jpWz-cBo68k/видео.html Here are the lyrics... How many arms have held you And hated to let you go How many? How many? I wonder But, I really don't want to know How many lips have kissed you And set your soul a glow How many? How many? I wonder But, I really don't want to know So always make me wonder Always make me guess And even if I ask you Darling, don't confess Just let it remain your secret But darling, I love you so No wonder, no wonder, I wonder Though I really don't want to know
