You know, what really irks me about the Silent Hill games is that 80% of the doors have broken locks. The apartments in Silent Hill 2 especially.
Someone in Silent Hill really hated those locks.

Honestly I played so much Silent Hill when I was younger, I am constantly noticing sound effects from that series in other things. Evidently they have the same sample CDs
The main wooden door open noise from SH2 pops up in sooo many things. There's something that it plays constantly in but I'm drawing a blank right now on what it is (it might be South Park actually??)

I always hated when a door was broken when it led to a cool sounding room on the map, especially in the Baldwin Mansion in Silent Hill 2’s Maria scenario. I thought it was such a cop-out. At least in Resident Evil, almost every single door serves a purpose and leads to somewhere.
It adds to Silent Hill's surrealism
As someone who's played plenty of both, this complaint kinda bugs me. On the one hand I get it, because I was a teenager a while ago and also felt how I wanted to go EVERYWHERE but the thing is... Silent Hill puts so much effort into the location design, and where you can and can't go is pretty important. It's a different design philosophy from the ground up and it works for Silent Hill, because the characters are always implicitly being lead somewhere. It makes the path you're on feel deliberate, which is an important part of the horror Silent Hill is going for.
You can't compare these two, Resident Evil maps are designed like puzzle boxes. They make sense in-game, but would make no sense in real life, this is why the police station in RE2 had to be described as an "art-museum turned into a police station" to justify it's very abstract nature. Many rooms in there would make no sense if they weren't in a videogame. Silent hill, on the other hand, takes place in a normal city and the buildings you're going through are more centered in reality, so you end up having tons of redundant rooms. There's no way you could design a game around entering all 45 pacient cells in the hospital or every apartment in every floor in the apartment complex, and the only solution is locking the doors. You can't really tinker with the realism in SH as much as you can in RE because the whole premise is that it's a normal-city-turned-evil.
Though it’s received a divisive response so far, the Silent Hill 2 remake promises to make the town much larger and also open up places that were previously inaccessible.
