CA Studios End of Workshop Play
My daughters participated in an acting workshop where they wrote their own play (one acted and interned, one just acted!) and they presented the final product Friday night! They did such a good job! :)

I remember watching that scene with my husband for the first time. When Jayne got cut he flinched like crazy since it all started out so peaceful and normal.
For context, River is picking up on Simon's dislike of Jayne. When Jayne dismisses Simon, it's likely he had some intrusive thoughts. River is unable to distinguish her own emotions from those of others she's reading. So also can't control those emotions, so River slashed Jayne...but Simon inadvertently made her do it.
I always liked that Mal was just as disgusted by Jayne's spitting as Simon, the crew's overly fastidious and fancy-pants member.
Poor Jane !!! Jane why you messed with that Woman?? You already know she ain't all there. Dummy!!!

She slashed him because she knows the prick is going to betray her and Simon to the Feds.
Yet attacking him was Jaynes tipping point. She attacked him first why does nobody ever want to acknowledge that.

I love that Jayne gets slashed with a knife resulting in a massive gash and yet he still is able to stand up and smack the (admittedly small) woman who did it across the room.

Jayne hesitated and showed remarkable restraint when he backhanded River. I think he was actually growing accustomed to them. :)

The irony here is that while you can argue River did this because she sensed his future betrayal, her slashing him here was effectively the tipping point that convinced him to actually try turning them in. Self fulfilling prophecy is fulfilling.
But did she slash him because she sensed his future betrayal? The agents that were hunting River (who wore blue gloves) were employed by Blue Sun. The Blue Sun corporation is involved with what happened to River. The commercial that triggers her in Serenity is a commercial for a Blue Sun product. Now look at the logo on the shirt Jayne’s wearing. The logo River slashed through.
@@JeantheSecond is correct here I think. Also she has shown instinctual actions to mimic the actions/intentions of others. She acts out what other people are thinking about doing. Look at the exchange between Jayne and Simon carefully. Tell me that Jayne isn't thinking about slashing Simon when he says not to spit and all those other things. Sharpening his knife. "Let's not be excluding people, that'd be rude."
Jayne was going to turn on them the moment he got a chance without his being detected. Ariel was probably on his list of planets where he could do it. My guess is that he already had plans to betray them. All he had to do was take some R and R on the planet, contact security, and have Serenity raided while he was still on the planet. His plans were nerfed because Mal states no one is to leave the ship. River reads his intentions and strikes. All the stuff that happens after wasn't predicted by River. I don't think she predicts the future. She reads minds. Jayne ultimately betrays them because he does make it to the planet. The slash across the chest wasn't the last straw. He was just another straw.

@@tonymiller2272 can't it be both? She didn't "attack" other blue sun food/packaging on the ship. Maybe Jayne was a confluence of everything "against her" in that one moment.
One can only wonder why they cancelled a great show like this and then proceed to make Another Life.

Well it's been over a year, so, you know... we're biding our time.
She did it because she sensed his betrayal although the irony is he probably wouldn't have done it if she hadn't done that to him. Love Jayne regardless because he tries to stop the deal in the end.
@TheGirlgamer3 he never tries to stop it in the end, he just realized the Feds double-crossed him and he was just trying to save his own arse.
@theprogram863 The scene in the last episode where River reads their "subsconscious" when he is with Books.. he outright says "i got stupid the money looked too good" means he really regreted it even if he will never ever acknowledge it..

Interesting, makes a lot of sense in relation to her statement afterwards, and she seems completely bewildered at everyone's shock, as if she has no idea even then that she has cut him.

It's probably also because Jayne was being a dick, saying "let's not exclude people, that would be rude' along with the blue sun symbol, etc.
A second season of Firefly, it would be awesome. Sadly I just don't see that happening.

@FireflyFanatic3 i agree, I also thought Jayne had a thing for Kaylee because he's always nicer to her and worries over her. Particularly when that 1 guy shoots her and he's ready to kill the man
I'm guessing the Blue Sun was a clever coverup for the Alliance's black ops division that ran the academy that hurt River the way they did? No wonder she went ape, then! Here's hoping that if Firefly gets a second season put on the web, we get to see this storyline developed!

I love Jayne, but you gotta admit, he kinda deserved that XD River and Jayne are the best characters ever.
And probably a good couple.

@@edwinhughes6493 And it was probaly the logo on the T-shirt that prompted her....just hada thought, is this before or after the episode with the food can label swapping? Either way there is some connection I would say, and all the food could well be from Blue Sun corp.

@naroays I also think that one of the reasons (alongside the initial pompousness and rich snobness of Simon) that Jayne always hated Simon was cos he liked Kaylee. Well, that's my take anyway ... like he just stands and watches through the window when she's in the infirmary, looking so concerned, and that's really not like Jayne.
@ShockTherapist007 No, it's because of the Blue Sun logo. Just like how she tore up the food cans that had the "Blue Sun" logo and only the "Blue Sun" logo.

I love how this scene interacts with a later part of the comic, where Mal asks the crew if there are any comments just before a job. River's reply? "I HATE that color on you. Always have!" Nobody even bats an eye.
