MaXXXine – Crafting a Scream Queen
MaXXXine is more than just A24's shot at a blockbuster summer horror film: it's a meaningful conclusion to the story of Maxine Minx and it marks the end to an incredible set of iconic performances from legendary scream queen Mia Goth. In this video essay and analysis, I trace Maxine Minx's origins and define what it really means to be a scream queen, and what that means for both Maxine Minx and the actress who plays her. Did Ti West and Mia Goth nail this one? Find out!

I really would love to see the game your selling us. I think the ideas of finding a vaccine with Eliie being alive would give points to Joel's sacrifice and prove to Abby that her dad may have been wrong in wanting to operate on Ellie. Also, I truly think that TLOU cannot finish on a full happy ending with a cure being widespread to everyone. Either they cannot create one or they face moral problems with other tribes/organisations as you mentionned. I only disagree on the fact that the Fireflies are meant to be the "good guys". I believe that the problems might be coming internally when it comes to spreading the cure. I think that is why mainly everyone loves TLOU, is because there is no good or bad persons, only morally questionnable decisions that make all of us debate about them for a decade. Top video anyways :)

Great video! Loved your takes and they helped explain why I just stayed up watching a sit com end hah. There’s just another layer I’d add about Jonah- I believe he is able to stay eternally hopeful because he had the privilege of growing up affluent. He has an inherent safety net the other characters don’t, and he is aware of what a higher wage lifestyle can feel like. So many layers to this show! Also this is the only media I’ve found so far where the pandemic doesn’t make me tune out, so well done.

I disagree that the game is overall about narrative control but I do agree with the parallels with Mags in the 3rd act when we deciding on what to put on the mural. Act 1 throws out the idea of narrative control cause the person who is executed is left up to the Archdeacon NPC. As the player your only control is whom the archdeacon considers to be a potential guilty suspect and that is incumbent upon how much evidence you can gather. Didn't fail in act 2 so I don't know what happens if you fail against the mob there. Given that the story doesn't not tell you who actually commited the individual murders you have to live with the uncertainty of your choice in who is to be executed or who is executed in their stead if you fail to prove your suspect did so. There is a mistake in your video (Your narrative control lol). The thread puller's notes were to encourage ppl to kill the victims, not as blackmail. They reminded the suspects of how wronged they were by the victims in order to stir up hatred. Now on the 3rd Act I do agree with the parallels about narrative control, however you miss the point of the ending when the church itself breaks down and the art piece Mags was working on gets lost as well. History does not get to see what Mags made. If we were to take the epilogue pan out of the ending as cannon, and not a meta 4th wallbreak like being able to zoom out of the game at times (to see the book), then that shows us the actual player exercising narrative control to write the story of what happened. In regards to the townspeople in Act 3, like many ppl they have their own perspectives of the revolt (especially with Andreas) and they are content in knowing what they know, without exploring to find out the truth of the matter. It not them expressing narrative control by actively choosing one truth out of a complex bags of facts, it's that the bag itself barely contains anything in the first place cause the ppl didn't want to investigate further. The game to me is to have hope and have faith in providence as the evil thread puller was exposed in the end despite their efforts. I just wish Mags took the Mars head when she ran out of the room. If you want a game about narrative control, play Headliner.

I know this video is kinda old now, but this was a really great and thorough look at the game! Having just finished NQ1/started NQ2 this week, what really stands out to me is how different they feel, even though they're built on the same general system. NQ1 has all those different magic styles and their associated weapons, so theoretically, it could've made for a really neat character-building setup. But because of the game's restrictions and difficulty, it's not well-balanced. You've got one character and very limited healing options - not even any inns or shops! - so damage-mitigation becomes the name of the game. Why bother blasting enemies with fire and ice when shock and evasion let you stun enemies altogether or avoid damage entirely? NQ2 is simpler, with just the damage boosts and choosing between single-target/group-target skills, but spreading them across four separate characters alone makes everything feel more engaging. The level progression is also way less grindy (which says a lot about NQ1, lemme tell you :Y ), and having inns and shops helps to round everything out better. Honestly, playing NQ2 right now makes me wonder how well it could translate to something like RPG Maker. That's kinda the vibe it gives me: a simple but solid RPG Maker game, in the best and most positive way possible.

It’s interesting that we can say the identity of an artist that may be writing about the experiences of someone that they themselves might not actually be, or have personally experienced “doesn’t matter” if the execution was brilliant and their identity is unknown, yet our culture doesn’t give the same leeway in the slightest to creators when we know, or think we know who they are. For myself, an artist should be able to create anything they like, about anything they want, and if they do a terrible job then the public has every right to criticize, but cavalierly making exceptions when it suits us does not help the artistic landscape we currently live in at all; that is unless we want all artists to now work anonymously, use pseudonyms, and everybody agrees to the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ code.

Lovely essay, made me feel like rewatching the series and realize how much I missed Elena and Lila. Indeed it's a masterpiece, for me, I find it very sensorial, it brings me right in in certain scenes, almost with a physical sensation. Scenes that are just small intimate moments become universal, for example the first time that Elena dives into the sea, the sensation of floating and the beauty of nature around her. You can feel what a moving experience it's for her, the discovery that the land she comes from, away from the people and the struggles, is peaceful, and welcoming like a mother. It's a show I would have like to watch with my mum, this is her generation, she was from Tuscany, had a strong but sensitive character like Lila. Grew up without a father after WW2 and learned to be strong and made well for herself... She would have loved this show, but unfortunately passed away some years before it was made. If you like the books, I also advise Follow Your Heart by Susanna Tamaro. Also a story of women, mothers, daughters and relationships through the decades in Italy. There was also a very moving film made about it with Virna Lisi.

Not sure if you're going to see this but just felt like commenting this: I randomly found your house party video and your opinion on adult media / the history is really interesting. So I bought the game and started played it. I've got 10 hours of playtime so far, and it's a fun, silly game. I then found this video and decided I was gonna try this game as well. I played it (megan path) and I actually really liked it. It made me realise that I love a good story with drama and emotion. However I noticed that not only games like these, but also porn are mainly written from a mans perspective, for a male audience. That made me think... what about media/entertainment aimed at woman? Is it different? How so? So I wanted to find a way to experience that side of the subject as well. I went to a bookstore and bought 2 books: Twisted love, and it ends with us. Since these books are mainly aimed at women, I'm curious what my opinion will be when I finish them. So, I guess 1 of your videos made me curious about this subject and lead to me diving in this rabbit hole. So I wanted to say thanks!
