Artists' Strategies for Better Perspective
Просмотров 7314 дней назад
I deconstructed the perspective techniques of a variety of artists to discover how they achieved the illustion of depth in their works. This was originally a livestream, which I have trimmed down for clarity. I'm not an expert on perspective, but I have used it for decades in my work. This study is a combination of talking about what I know, and seeking out what I don't, with the assistance of ...

Woodcut Post Production 03 - Sign and Number
Awesome video! Thank you! Do you have noticed any quality differences in MDF? I once purchased MDF which was completely unusable for carving. The surface would more likely tear instead of cut clean edges.
Thanks! For MDF, you have to get the high density kind, otherwise it's totally useless for woodcuts. You might be able to get small pieces from an art supply store. If you want to make bigger prints (or save money), you can bring them to the lumber yard and ask for full sheets of the same stuff.
@@JRenzella Yeah I got it from the local "Home depot" equivalent both times, but got different qualities apparently.
How frustrating, especially if you spent a lot of time drawing on it only to not be able to carve
Thank you so much for you effort en teaching and showing your art. - From Denmark
Thank you, I'm glad you appreciate it!
thanks for the video. there are a few things i haven't seen before. much appreciated
You're welcome, I'm happy to share
Thank you for making this video - very interesting!
Thank you for watching!
I got immediate shock when seeing the frame from 9:40 which is used as a cover for Faith No More album. I sure love how Drooker and Burns' art look like they are working with white ink on black paper. When looking at it it makes you think in reverse about shapes. Also Woodring's grading reminds me of how Gustave Dore was shading/texturing/crosshatching. It's incredible technique and while it takes a lot of time, the effects are eyecandy. I sure will look into those for inspiration.
Just going to mention it. Lol.
I'm particularly drawn to Drooker and Burns for that reason. It's always amazed me how Burns especially makes his ink work feel like a woodcut. Also, I had forgotten about that album cover, but could see it clearly as soon as you mentioned it!
Love me some Conan! In Robert E. Howard's stories, it seems like anything is possible. It's a world that is totally wide-open and free, but violent conflict and death is a given. I have been thinking a lot about this lately, how I both hate and am drawn irresistibly towards tales of conflict and death. In terms of actual historical events, I really love stories about WWII even though, objectively and according to the better angels of my nature, it's all horror and monstrosity. I guess it is inherently dramatic if nothing else.
The duality of man, or some such thing, eh? I'm a huge sucker for Conan, the art and the genre in general. Maybe it's all the top-tier artists who have worked on the character that made him great, or maybe it's something about that world that attracts them.
I’m trying to control my self and stop drawing sexy women i relapse daily

Great stuff, I've never heard of this website before but ill add it to my collection. Before I was using QuickPoses which is essentially the same thing.
Quick Poses is also great, I usually switch between the two. Line of Action's class mode is well worth checking out, I think it's the one thing it has that QP doesn't.
Thank you so much! I had found and used this website awhile ago; but then forgot the name of the site when I wanted to return and practice the timed poses again. Very cool of you to feature this! ❤
I'm glad it was helpful! Here's another great site that I use: quickposes.com/en/gestures/timed
These are amazing, I'm learning myself atm and while body construction has been going going at a pretty steady pace gesture drawing/showing off movement has been pretty hard, since I never really know where to start. Noticed you start with the torso and pelvis most of the time and then make your way to the leg. Will definitely try it out for myself!
Thank you! I find different poses call for different starting points, but usually the torso and pelvis makes the most sense just because together they're the biggest piece. There's usually also a nice gestural relationship between them, and it's easier to connect everything else from there. Most of the time the legs are supporting the body, so for me it makes sense to draw them next. The relationship betwen the weight-bearing leg and the head is important for making things look balanced. Of course, there's no one right way to do it! I think the best thing is to try different approaches and choose what works best for you. Most artists use a mishmash of things they've learned from other artists, and that's what becomes our style. Good luck with your drawings!
@@JRenzella Thanks for the insight! 🙏
Beautiful work! How on earth you manage to get a body of work together to have exhibits with such time/ labor intensive work is a mystery to me. ( you mentioned in the video it can take up to two years before you pen an artistic vision onto wood). I’m teaching myself Moku Hanga mostly from watching Dave Bull videos, Laura Boswell book, and a few other things, too.
Thank you! Most of the two years is thinking about the concept and how it will look, a sort of pre-production. During that time, I work on other projects, some that I've been thinking about for 2 years, and other ones that are less conceptual (a landscape, for example). My exhibitions are usually a combination of long-term works and quicker pieces. My carving style is also faster than the traditional Moku Hanga way, which Dave Bull uses. I don't use a knife, but instead carve around my shapes with my U gouges. I mostly stick to 2 gouges, and get into a rhythm when I carve, which speeds things up. I have a few videos on this channel demonstrating my carving process in more depth. Good luck with your carving, it's such a satisfying way to make art, and I find it very relaxing as well!
thanks for all the info
You're welcome!
The kind of wood you used, please
It's MDF, the higher density the better
Thank you so much for posting this art study, I was so inspired by Mucha’s art that I wanted to do an art study as well :)
That's great, I'm glad you got something out of it! I always liked Mucha, but after studying him I have a much deeper appreciation of how sophisticated his works are. It's definitely a valuable thing to do.
Looks like you are carving MDF.
That's right!
Looking good Jon!
Thanks P.I.!
Nice video, thanks. I wonder if there are tiny spoon gouges out there? A rang of those would speed up the process for a design that contained multiple circles of different diameters.
Interesting, I've never tried one of those before. Please let me know if you give it a shot!
Heck yeah!! Let's gooo!
Woo! at last 😄
Wow, you have so much art that perfectly captures the essence of Taiwan!
Thanks! I feel there's so much to be inspired by here
Beautiful ❤️ Taiwan, wo ai ni
Beautiful stuff!
Thank you!
Nicely done and wonderful prints
Thank you!
Thanks for making me cry, Jon 🥰
I do what I can 😅
I prefer linoleum over wood block relief and reduction cutting. But I like the wood cutting sound. My impressions are limited based upon the editions.
what wood is that......
Very helpful. I shied away from MDF bc I didn't think it would give me crisp lines. Clearly I was wrong. Beautiful work and thank you for the peek into your creative process.
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful! Lower density mdf is no good for crisp lines, so you were partly right to avoid it. The higher density stuff is good for carving.
gotdam what an intro !!
thank you!
Wonderful artwork Jon. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and insight. Please, what is the matrix you are carving? Is is a ply or a composite wood structure? Thanks again for sharing your work.
Thank you! I'm carving mdf (higher density variety)
Amazing
Thank you!
Very nice 👍 impressive work. I want to start this with my drawings too.. Do you know about the woodcut print residency program ?
Thank you! I'm not sure I do, where is it?
I was asking you because I thought you might know some residency programs
Ah I see, sorry I'm not familiar with any
Hey Jon, Plumsink here. WOW you look young in this video LOL! Very inspiring words at the end, you have to be willing to fail and to struggle and keep on anyway. Basically I think all successful artists have to have a fixed idea in their brains that they are artists and this is what they do and they are going to keep on doing it regardless of external circumstance. Because otherwise there are too many things that will tend to incline you to stop.
Thanks! I agree and yeah, the years have not been kind 😅
You look much more distinguished now. You look like a kid in this. ;) @@JRenzella
I miss you
Are you carving MDF?
I am!
Excellent work. I don't know why this technique isn't more popular.
Thank you! I agree, I love the contrast between the hardness of the woodcut and the softness of the watercolor.
Holy hell, that guy is incredible! Does he have an art book available? I'd love one
Thank you! And yes, you can get one here www.jrenzella.net/store/f3mxv1o5qnjkjlaz
Does the woodcutter-woodcuttee life cycle operate as a conventional temporal narrative? Because I think I can hear some woody screams...
Those must be from the previous unfortunate woodcutter 😬 the cycle continues
Beautiful work and process
thank you!
What kind of wood do you use and how that woodblock calls?
I use MDF, the higher density the better. I'm sorry, I don't understand the second part of your question.
@@JRenzella I got that, thank you!
Why has this not more views! I love your content and work. Will pick some MDF today and start :)
Thanks, and good luck to you!
Love seeing your process! And what a great subject.
Thank you!
Love Your Music, dear Mari - also interesting to know more about the actual production / recording / editing - process. Please go on to do videos on this subject
Your audio is amazing… what you using?
Thanks! I use a Zingyou mic with the Presonus audio box USB 96 filtered through OBS.
Ooh, these look fantastic! This sounds like a really fun, satisfying practice! I really like that you took your time with it as well and didn't try to force yourself to keep it to ten days. I think it's more enjoyable, taking a bit more time with these exercises. Ten days just seems too short!
Thank you! It was very satisfying, and having a chance to reflect as I went and not be too stressed by the time limit was a big plus, though I'm sure there would have been other benefits from powering through in ten days.
Nice walk through!
Thank you!
This is amazing!! So much wonderful work!
Thanks Sir Knight!
So pretty :)
Meant to add in last comment, your video was very helpful.
Thank you! Do you mean you'd like to see a video on facial features and shadowing in woodcut?
Facial features and shadowing???
Wonderful video!
What a lovely exercise! I'm going to have to try this. Thank you for demonstrating!
