- This is the third of a series of improvisational works that I’ll be uploading to Soundcloud.
My goal as a composer is to create musical works that fluctuates between order and chaos. I have yet to accomplish this balance in my work.
To push my boundaries as a composer, I developed a daily piano practice that involves focused improvisation. Each improvisation starts with a simple rhythmic and harmonic pattern. As the pattern progresses, I change the structure and harmony gradually with focus and intuition. The aim is to play the piano in unconventional ways to break through my own barriers and fears as a performer.
I decided to name these works “impressions” as they are like musical imprints conceived in the moment without a predetermined concept or idea. To make these impressions even more obscure, I decided to pick a tarot card to represent each piece.
When I did this improvisation I was feeling quite emotional. I felt the need to move in and out of melody and tonality which created the dissonance and intensity I needed at that moment. The Tarot card I picked by random was the three of cups.
