    I really enjoyed your take on the reviews, I think it's fine not to enjoy a book, not everything is for everyone, but maybe it would be nice to just explain what we didn't like. It could be that if the explanation made sense, people would have a good outlook on whether to read a book or not. Even though we might feel strongly about a book, it's fine to say we didn't enjoy it, but just thrashing it is a bit impolite.

    • @aiscahill
      @aiscahill 3 дня назад

      Yes, absolutely! I often don't even speak about books I don't enjoy, or that I don't finish because I think about the author sitting down writing that book and putting their heart and soul into it, and it feels wrong of me to thrash something that just wasn't for me, when it's usually just down to personal taste. So much of reading is entirely subjective.

    The book I’m reading has dialogue in italics in the body of the paragraph. That’ll really confuse ‘em! 😂 I always get a good laugh from one star reviews. The people who laughed through A Little Life probably need a lesson in empathy 😂

    • @aiscahill
      @aiscahill 3 дня назад

      I actually read a book last month where some of the dialogue was in italics and some of it wasn't. It took me until about the 75% mark to realise that the dialogue in italics was dialogue that was spoken in another language (it was still in English in the book). I was definitely a bit baffled about that one 😂 I worry about anybody who laughs at A Little Life 🥲

    Hi Aisling, Foster is on my TBR. I've read and 5 stared The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters but prefer cozier historical fiction. I've always loved slow character driven stories. My brain is opening to literary generational ones. I'm starting The Blackwater Lightship today. As an anxiety suffer I need realism to be balanced with cozy. "Lydia you must be very old" 😂😂😂 I stopped using Goodreads ratings as any sort of guide as to whether or not I should personally pick/read certain books, simply because a lot of the very highly reviewed books are not my style. It's similar to IMDB, where popular movies tend to get high ratings, and if you're not into the popular movies, it's not super helpful. Who would have known that quotation marks for dialogue could be so divisive... Currently reading (and enjoying) Solar Bones, and I love how it is written. Yay for authors expressing their thoughts with a blatant disregard for the grammatical confines of traditional formatting!

      I haven't heard of it, but thank you! My name is quite common here in Ireland, but seems to be relatively unheard of outside of here. There was an Irish poetic genre called an aisling that dates back to the 17th/18 centuries, which is where the name comes from, although I think the name didn't actually gain popularity until the 20th century or so. There's a whole series of novels (I think there are five of them) called "Oh My God, What A Complete Aisling" that have been really popular here in Ireland. I can't vouch for them because I haven't read them myself, though ☺️

    What happened to you with Monstrolio exactly happened to me with A Psalm for the wild-built. I had such high expectations and I was so convinced that I would love it that I even bought the hardback 😅 it turns out I really liked it, but didn’t reach the unrealistic levels of amusement that I had expected 😂 Night at the circus and Saltwater sound really good btw! Oh no, that's such a shame. I was gifted A Psalm for the Wild built a couple of years ago and hadn't heard anything about it so I was lucky to be able to go into it without knowing anything about it, and ended up really enjoying it. It's such a shame that we allow our expectations to get so much in our own way sometimes. I'm so afraid to put anybody off of any books that they might potentially really enjoy. I think it's really unfair for somebody like me (who has never written and published a book) to sit on the internet and convince people that a book that somebody has put their absolute heart and soul into while writing it is absolutely terrible. We all enjoy different things at different times, and I always want to be mindful of that. I rarely speak about books I don't finish for that reason, too. Thanks for your lovely comment. Isn't it funny how we all have such different opinions on the same books? I did enjoy Monstrilio but it fell victim to my (too high) expectations. I wonder if I'd have enjoyed it more if I picked it up without having heard of it before. I was gifted Silas Marner by a family member because it's her favourite book, so I think it's safe to say that I just wasn't the audience for it because so many people love it so much. Wow, what a diverse bunch of books! Sorry to hear Kaigen didn’t quite land for you, but it’s a fair dislike. I definitely tend to skim combat scenes. I’m currently enjoying ‘Tales of Love and Darkness’ by Amos Oz, a sort of reminiscence and memoir of his family and growing up in Israel. Beautifully written. Also just started ‘Birth of a White Nation’ because I heard a talk about how the Irish were treated by England, how the notion of whiteness had something to do with the poor Irish immigrants vs the landowners in the colonies here, and I got curious about what that was all about. There’s only a bit in ‘Birth…’ but it’s what I have on my shelf, and it even qualifies for Shortie September.

      I'm nothing if not a mood reader, and apparently my mood changes a lot 😅 TSOK had so many elements that I love but I think the long combat chapters were its downfall for me. I can certainly see why it's so beloved. Yes, Ireland has a long, dark and complicated history with England, but they colonised a lot of different places so we're absolutely not alone in that. Thankfully, we have a much better relationship with Britain in contemporary times ☺️ I hope you're enjoying Shorty September so far. If you've enjoyed novels that stand on respect and awe for the natural world as one of the pillars, like Richard Powers' writing, I would recommend "A Cat at the End of the World" by Robert Perišić, a Croatian author. I've just finished it and it is one of my dearest books I've read this year. The story follows a boy, a cat and a donkey in a period of setting up one of the first Greek settlements in the Adriatic islands. A lot of warm and thought provoking musings, with references to real life places. It can be a change delving into less well known authors not so much hyped on the BookTube but I think definitely deserves more attention :)

      Thanks for the recommendation, Sara. It sounds like a really great read. It's so easy to get caught up in the hype of online book recommendations, but I've loved so many books that I've never heard about on social media too. Once my physical TBR becomes more manageable, I really hope to read some lesser known books, and some books from some countries I've never read from. Off the top of my head, I've never read from any Croatian authors and your recommendation sounds like a great place to start ☺️

    I had the same experience as you with the Overstory! I will finish Middlemarch in September and it already makes me a bit sad, since it was part of my life for the past seven months😊. I will also read my first Trevor William book. I only heard of him last week and since he is irish and the exerpt that I listened to was beautiful, I couldn't resist. Have you read any of his works?

    • @aiscahill
      @aiscahill 11 дней назад

      I've heard the same about The Overstory from others, too. Ahhh seven months is such a long and lovely time to spend with a book. I hope you don't find it too tough to get into other books once you're done. I actually haven't read any Trevor, which is awful. I've been really bad at reading Irish literature, which is something I want to work on once I get through my physical TBR. I do hear great things about his works though, so I hope his writing lives up to your expectations ☺️

      I don't have a huge Irish following here on this channel, but I expect that once you start your studies, you'll find some communities that are exactly what you're looking for. Dublin is our capital city, but as cities go, it's actually quite small. Best of luck with your move! ☺️

      I'm very much looking forward to the new Richard Powers - I've heard really good things about this and I think that the issues I've had with his works that I've already read don't seem to be at play in this one, so fingers crossed! I just happened to pick up The Way of Kings when I was at a loose end in my partner's house, and I have no regrets. I've heard that the Mistborn books are probably a better place to start though, or with some of his recent standalones either ☺️ I hope you're enjoying Shorty September so far. I'm completely ignoring it in the effort to get through my own physical reads, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for next year that I can take part.

    I’m currently reading ‘Death Tango’ by M. Lachi, a scifi story of augmented humans, bots, hackers, megacorps, and murder. I think it’s an indie book, and I’m really liking it so far. Just finished ‘Orbital’, nominated for the LeGuin and Booker. Hate to say it, but it really didn’t work for me. Slice of life of 6 astronauts during routine day, meditative, gorgeous descriptions of the Earth, but in the end just fell flat.

      Death Tango sounds so interesting. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of it, but it sounds like it has a lot going for it ☺️ I feel like Orbital has been quite divisive so far. Plenty of people seem to LOVE it, and then there are loads like you who didn’t quite love it in the end. I didn’t have any huge ambitions to read it, but the more I hear about it, the more curious I am. It might be one for my 2025 TBR ☺️

    Hi Aisling, I've been a historical/myth based fantasy reader since bindgeing The Winternight Trilogy in 2020. I also love cozier fantasy. Shirley Jackson is as gothic as I get. I''m participating in Shorty September for the first time. Your TBR inspired me to go a little dark so I'll be reading the Ice Palace. I haven't gotten along with Japanese translated books. Look at you tackling Brando Sando before the fifth book - cheering you on! I had mixed feelings about The Overstory too. It started off so strong but I DNFed it temporarily because it didn’t sustain my attention after the first third. I’ll attempt it again because I do enjoy cli-fi and would like to read more in the genre. I still need to read Crooked Kingdom too but also can’t remember anything about Six of Crows. Oops. Looking forward to spring here (but not summer). I miss sitting out on the verandah to read and soak up the sun.

      Thank you! I’ve finished book 3.5 now so I’m good to go ☺️ I felt that how The Overstory went was such a shame because it was really such a strong start. I can’t even really remember now how the plot went because I wasn’t pushed on it, but I still think about its opening scenes even though it’s been quite some time since I read it. Also, cli-fi! I never knew what it was called 😅 Quite a few people say that Crooked Kingdom was better than Six of Crows so I look forward to getting stuck back into them. Hopefully you can enjoy Spring without the thought of a looming Summer getting to you too much 🌸

    I think apart from War and Peace I've either read and loved or have the book on my TBR. Will absolutely be subscribing! I'd recommend A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. It's another historical fiction set in India. The characters are brilliant Or for a modern big book I'd recommend Never by Ken Follett. It's about trying to avoid starting World War 3. If we do have similar taste in books, i would definitely recommend reading Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak. Its about a boy called Clay and is how different people view him and what he means to them. Loved it. Long books i have on my TBR are Sword of Kaigen by M L Wang, An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears and I'd like to read all of Dickens one day. And most of Stephen King

I only just finished Sword of Kaigen and would be very curious to hear your thoughts on it once you get around to reading it yourself. I think the only Dickens I've finished so far is A Christmas Carol (I often struggle with momentum while reading classics) but I'd love to read more of his books one day 😊

    Totally agree about bookshops. You can't find surprises online like you can in bookshops. Going book shopping is like going treasure hunting. You never know what you'll find 😊 I must say that I love yarn shops equally to bookshops now that I'm a knitter, though. Trilogies are definitely series! I have read some series' longer than three books, but it's very difficult to keep momentum going for longer than three books, I think. Genevieve Cogman's Invisible Library series did sustain my interest for seven books, but that's rare. I've yet to read Hobb, though! Heroes OR villains who have a sympathetic back story that makes them a villain, but then they turn into a hero in the end. They're usually just such interesting characters. I'm a bookmark girl too! I have exactly the same feelings regarding buying or borrowing books. I'm actually trying to reduce my owned TBR to zero. I have 15 physical books left to read, but have been borrowing a lot from the library lately. I'm hoping to get under 10 at least, or maybe under five by the end of the year. Have also bought hardly any books this year as well, which I'm happy about. If I read it from the library and love it, I will get a copy then to keep. Character and plot for me. If there's no plot, I find I get bored. I've read some brilliant short books and some equally brilliant long books. I find fictional worlds hold a mirror to ours more often than not. It's one of the reasons I read fantasy 😊Totally agree about audiobooks. My brain has the same experience with audio as it does if I'm reading text, so, totally reading. I definitely judge books by their covers. They tell a lot about the vibe of a book. Plus, some covers are just incredible art in their own right. I love a beautifully illustrated cover.

    • @aiscahill
      @aiscahill 21 день назад

      They're honestly the best. We didn't have a proper bookshop in the town I grew up in but I was always so fascinated with the small corner of our local newsagents that stocked some books. Thankfully we did have a pretty good library, though, so I wasn't too terribly restricted ☺️ I wasn't aware of The Invisible Library series, so thanks for bringing those to my attention. I love books that are about or mention books and libraries! Fifteen physical books is great. I aspire to get to where you are. Oh exactly. I never used to read fantasy, and only really fully embraced it just over a year ago. As much as I love literary fiction, it just doesn't scratch that itch for me that fantasy does. Me too! I'm such a sucker for a good cover. I remember people were raving about how great The Promise is by Damon Galgut and while it sounds like I'd love it, I can't bring myself to pick it up because I really dislike the cover 🫠

  • @katie5773

    I really enjoyed The Ministry of Time as well. Pretty sure it will make it onto my favourites for the year. For me, it's not so much sci fi as speculative, which I think allows her to bring in the colonial critique, especially with the mixd race main character. It's so interesting that we never get her name, and that she's so focused on fitting in in British society, which is represented by this mysterious Ministry. I read Book Lovers earlier this year and liked it, but I find romance super hit or miss for me. My favourite romance writer is Helen Hoang. I really believe in her characters and their stories. I find that not every romance is one I can really get invested in. I think they're hard to do really well, and some writers are a bit lazy about them!

    • @aiscahill
      @aiscahill 21 день назад

      I thought that it was such a cleverly written book. It feels on the surface like a fun and whimsical read, but it delves into so many different and important issues.
