Hi. I'm a musician, and I make music. wowee wow wow.
ifdots music gear setup 2024!
I've been making more music this winter and really like the gear that I have, so I wanted to make a short video about my current gear setup! It also seems like a nice little tradition to do, and I can see how the setup changes year-to-year.
TLDW: My list of actively-used gear is this:
-Digitone 2
-SP404mk2
-Minifreak
This all goes into an m1 iPad Pro that I'm using as a loopstation with Loopy Pro.
Within Loopy Pro I'm using these effects:
-TB Equalizer Pro
-Cascade
-Room Reverb
-Other Desert Cities
-Tape Cassette 2
I also have the model:cycles and model:samples, which I occasionally use if I want something less involved than the digitone or with more sequence-able sample mangling than the sp404mk2.

I wrote a few patterns for my model:cycles over the course of a few days, and spent 45-50 minutes performing them for a livestream. This was my first time livestreaming music to any number of people over 5, so it was pretty nerve-wracking. And I definitely missed a lot of transitions/etc./etc. But I think it went okay! Would you say owning one of these as a beginner prepares you for learning the the digitone/digitakt? Ive seen that teh digitakt/tone can be complex with tons of sub sub menus, but if the Cycles primes you for understanding the Takt then it may be something id pick up
@@Cactuspractice12 yes. I actually started with the digitone 1 first, went backwards to the model boxes, then to the d2 and it was way easier :)

thanks :) it’s one of those things where I initially felt pretty stupid spending $40 on a skin but it made me use it so much more that it’s been totally worth it, haha.
@if_dots I feel that. It's the same for me and my Lofi-12XT. The skin for mine makes me happy.

any problems on drivers on external audio interfaces?
@@RondallaScores no, though I haven’t done anything with custom drivers. I did notice lag running emulate analog lab playing larger chords though, so am using an x86 laptop for that.
@@if_dots i currently have the Behringer one but was quite hesitant because of driver problems.
@@if_dots thanks for the comment tho!
@@RondallaScores I think as long as it can use generic x86 drivers it's fine, and AFAIK that is what the behringers use - the lag situation isn't fantastic though, so it really depends on what you're doing with the interface. I didn't have interface problems just playing a controller like an astrolab through my scarlett 2i2 (other than emulation load as mentioned above ... the x86 emulation is definitely much worse than apple's). Windows does have a plan to bring Asio4All natively to ARM that they announced a little while ago that I'm planning to cover eventually in the update to this video - and that would solve any lag issues. The link is here: devblogs.microsoft.com/windows-music-dev/making-music-on-windows/ - but the release date is TBA (with a 'dev preview' shipping sometime in 2025), so I wouldn't count on it yet.
Yeah, this all feels a bit gross. Compared to other plugins, it seems way too soon for a paid version upgrade without being part of a subscription (not that I’d want that).
@@AvianBreak honestly, the price increase and discount means it’s basically the same to buy the original transit and the upgrade as it is to just buy transit 2, so I’m not super annoyed at the upgrade itself. … But this “you can always keep using transit 1, which has mysteriously disappeared from our downloads page, and will remain supported for the things it runs on now” business is … suspect.
Never gonna buy it, there are free glitch and other software that can do similar things.
Any recommendations on a good transition app option? I’ve heard others say Turnado but that’s not a good experience. I’m interested but I’m not seeing anything that does the transitions like Transit.
@@mhavock that’s true! I really like fracture as one of those but there are a bunch - I just like the way transit makes using it so simple
Oh hey
@@analoguewings hey :p
@@if_dots hey hey?
Hey!
Question, can you run 32bit Windows application on this Snapdragon cpu? I understand some kind of emulation is running on top of the Snapdragon? Are you able to add a normal logitec extra camera with x86 drivers? I gues not?
Hey, I don't use this much anymore but plugged it in to check, and I was able to use a logitech webcam (the c920) fine with it! (It did not install extra drivers - I assume it's using the generic microsoft drivers, but it looked good enough for me.) I am pretty sure that you also can run 32bit windows applications in emulation mode. They're slower than they would be otherwise, but ... 70% of them would run fine. If there's an emulated app that you 100% need to run I wouldn't recommend windows ARM right now (or possibly ever, depending on how the emulation layer comes along).
Fellow Prince fan here! 👩🏽🎤 I know exactly what you mean! 😅 You mentioned so many things that are relatable for me as a musician and composer! I've heard a few songwriters making 1 song a day to push themselves to learn and grow. I want to do it too. You and others have mentioned it's self-improvement benefits. Thank you for sharing. I subbed to support. 😊
I paid 80 quid for new one is garbage keyboard but I use it for the encoders and the transport which do the job .
i wish this tablet has 8gb + 128gb.
yeah ... me too. There's a version with 8gb+128gb actually, but it was $400 more when I was looking for it. At this point I'd say it's almost certainly not worth it - the new snapdragon things are so much more powerful, and an iPad and keyboard is generally going to still be more powerful than this. ... But I think if Lenovo re-released it with one of the new Snapdragon chips (and 8gb/128gb at least standard) it would be really great! We'll see if they do though.
I have Lenovo s7x and I am delighted with it. I have not had any problems and WSL works and so if I need Linux there is no problem. The M chips were the only interesting thing about macs and now that advantage is gone there is no reason to downgrade to a macbook
@@martinspedding4210 Glad to hear the Lenovo laptop is working for you! :)
Good video. I have the 15-inch Surface Laptop 7 and so far, so good. I'm sure down the road all the major apps will get updated to run smoothly on the ARM chipset. One thing for certain, if a person wants to run every conceivable program and play every single game that's on the market buy a Windows PC with an Intel or AMD chipset. If you only need certain programs MacBooks and these ARM Windows PC's should be perfectly fine. Do an updated video in a couple months and keep us posted. Thanks.
@@williamcopeland2617 Thanks! I’ll make sure to post an update video in a few months. At worst by the end of the year, depending on how quickly anything changes …
I’ve had my eye on this too! Thanks for the gas lol just/k My ears like this. If you do another channel, I’m there. Do you!
It's honestly way, way better than I thought it would be. Especially for $200 (you can find it in the used market for around that regularly) ... I actually was first introduced to the model:cycles by a friend, and I think me and him have very different sounds that he likes. I've found much more joy with it this time around (after learning the model:samples, also). I think punch actually expands the timbral versatility a lot. There's no attack, which is the most annoying feature of this and the model:samples, but otherwise ... beautiful.
Lovely little box and first jam. Very plunky. They make rly great products and are on my list to acquire after the new Microkorg 2 drops. I'm currently sample hunting for my Liven Lofi-6 and It's also a fun little device. Peace n love from a Texan Bear in their 30s and happy Pride to yah❤

I have trouble installing win11 23h2, it will not install
what does it say? I have 23h2 installed on mine, no issues there (other than having to get the drive empty enough to fit windows ...)
Good job! Thanks for sharing your video here. I think I would have enjoyed your longer first video as well. You realize that you are nicely ahead of most people in testing a WOA tablet, right? The only difference is that you didn't need to wait until after 5/20/2024 for a higher performance one with 16 GB RAM, like many other people will soon try. But we didn't get to hear more specifics and what gave you a little trouble on WOA. Good point on the reboots needed to fix a few things, but even x86-based tablets require these to fix a few Windows update issues, so some of those might not have been WOA-specific. Also, good point on choosing a WOA-native browser, but since Chrome has an ARM64 version out now, then there are 3+ options to choose from. Yeah, SW in the MS store probably works. Did you run into any SW NOT in the store that didn't work or gave you trouble before or after this review? BTW, if I were you, prior to your Lenovo W10, I would have brought a Surface charger (or even a USB-C charger) to your friend's house. The Surface Go 2/3 are great as small, light x86 Windows tablets that pretty much do it all. I prefer the M3 or I3 versions with 8GB RAM, and, yes, you must have a charger along, since they do go dead in no time, but they work greatly when you have a charger or power bank handy. Never any compatibility issues. But the W10 started to change this (as you showed here), and 5/20 announcement and WOA tablets after that will, apparently, change everything. Thanks again.
Thanks! Yeah, I realized nobody actually reviewed one of these, that's the only reason I posted actually :) In regards to your other stuff: I know I was completely able to bring a charger: I simply didn't really want to (also my Surface Go 1's screen touchscreen started to mysteriously go out soon after the 30 day refurb warranty for some reason ... mysterious ... but also, I was just curious about this and wanted a reason to get it, honestly! A trifecta of reasons). I tried a bunch of very low-end games in Steam: heroes of might and magic 3 doesn't work, but dungeon keeper does. Bloons works on it, which is pretty great. I ran into a few cases where the MS Store didn't actually trigger ARM downloads which was weird ... I feel like a lot of things that seemed like they were due to "incompatibility" though were actually due to the speed of the processor, low RAM, or low disk space. But even beyond that, I think I mentioned it, but I've had like ... five or six just random freezes that needed reboots on ARM, which is more than I've had on my plethora of Windows laptops up until now. Things like the screen just turning off, or screen orientation mysteriously not updating (and needing a reboot). This is of course a sample size of 1 though, with all the caveats that brings! I think the Snapdragon 8 processors were a step above this, and I'm sure the Snapdragon Elite will be a big step over that. And the arm experience - low heat, massive battery life, no fan - is great: I haven't experienced something like it in x86. Possibly just because companies aren't setting TDP low enough for my tastes, but I am excited to see how the X Elite does when it comes out in like a month. :)
Hi, I have a engineering 10w and I want to download the recovery image, but the sn is not valid. Could you please send me the sn or help me download the recovery image? Thank you.
the real power of a sampler is how much it can store, both per patch and in total. what is the storage power for sample of this LoFi12?
2 seconds per sample in high fidelity, 4 in low fidelity, and 128 sample slots. So it's ... definitely lacking in that facility, tbh. I ended up selling it off because chaining patterns was a PITA. Fun box though
@@if_dots Thank you very much. I definitely prefer a loopstation with 5 tracks and 13 hours of storage to samplers these days. Maybe if I had money to spare I'd take a chance on an MPC-X-SE to produce. But it's another "all-in-one" that becomes a problem of learning time, that I think I've already spent on my set lol. I have a Circuit, a Roland JDXA, two guitars (one acoustic) and 8 pedals. The instruments go into the Loopstation without a mixer, and the Circuit synchronizes to the 24ppq of the Roland and Boss naturally. If i ever produce to post, i'll have to buy a mixer to improve the sound, because the Loopstation is wonderful but it doesn't have such a good preamp. If one day the industry makes a real sampler like the E-mu Emulator II (with chromatic keys and good storage for today) then it would be a child's dream. Thank you for your prompt feedback and good creations.
Unfortunately, companies have a dangerous tendency to make specific devices an all-in-one device. This has been happening for decades with samplers and hybrid keyboards, and so far, with rare exceptions, they've been a failure at something in their attempt to be "whole". But everyone uses it as they wish. You'd prefer more synths, but if the sounds aren't any good with two, there's no point in having more. I'd prefer only Midi or instead of Synths on Circuit. I don't have to sacrifice my Brain (Loopstation 505) for it, there are many ways of braiding Midi chains - the groovebox doesn't always have to be Master. Companies don't seem to want specialist equipment like a pure groovebox any more, so we end up spending more for various functions that we don't even need, because of others that the device does well. Sad but true.
Ah ... I think I wouldn't prefer more, just better, if that makes sense? The circuit's synths (and effects) feel very ... low-quality to me, like a mid-1990's VA synth, to the point where it can't make a lot of the sounds that I would like to use it for. The Tracks works really well with midi out actually, and I think if you look at it in that perspective - a 2-part poly midi sequencer, with a 4-part mono sequencer/weak sampler attached and a free basic synth - it just sounds like a much better deal. Personally I just normally hate having to move between boxes in the process of making music. YMMV. There are other all-in-one grooveboxes that have much better synths - the MC-101, and MPC One, for instance - but they just don't have the speed of workflow that the Circuit has. But perhaps this is just endemic to the entire field of it: either be very weak, or convoluted. Thanks for your considered comment :)
