Tom I am on the exact same journey....are you aware of "loG" the instructor? He is currently setting my brain on fire. For example: ruclips.net/video/NX_9tVe4UYQ/видео.htmlsi=cWMrLgTwnGHToIk2
I'm on a similar journey in my playing. Using solo and practicing intervalic functions. These videos are helpful for me to see where I should be at in my own practice. Good stuff
Could you please tell us your set up? Directly into the amp, Guitar rig pro or similar? Pedals?
So glad the algorithm brought me to your vids pal, like you I’d been playing for years actually 30 years plus but never really put anything together, in fact I’ve felt like a glorified guitar collector for the longest time. I feel suitably inspired to try again after watching this. Cheers man
Damn the YT algorithm is great at finding the right viewer! I’ve been seeing your thumbnails for at least a week and now I know why. I’ve been playing for decades and up until recently knew nothing other than my own noodling and chords. Now I’m learning the neck and loving it. I also can’t play a single riff (ok maybe that Smoke on the Water one). So your progress is bang on what I needed to see. Keep it going 🔥😀👍
Impressive! Following 2 courses simultaneously is unheard of - most people buy 1 course and don't even complete it. 😂 Massive respect to you for your practice discipline 😎👊 Also documenting your journey is a smart tactic to help make you more accountable. Subbed 👍
nice content
Pleasure to be part of this journey with you bro! Ty for the shout out, instant improvement (to my ears at least) sound wise. Keep going!!
I really enjoy this series. It's a side of learning guitar we don't often get a glimpse of and it's really valuable to me to hear about your goals and your thought process as you design your practice. Please keep the videos coming!
Thr time comment is what im working on. I need to rhythm it up. These videos are great 👍
Omg a interview with Ross Campbell. His triad course really helped me last year
Awesome job Tom! I'm a complete beginner at guitar and realized pretty quick into learning different songs that I had no idea what I was playing. I was just memorizing chord shapes without understanding why I was playing those chords or even what notes made up that chord. Through searching for different methods, I came across your videos and they are an inspiration for sure! I too am practicing an hour every day and focusing on intervals and fretboard visualization knowing it will pay off in the future. It may not be the most fun now but it will be worth it. Thank you for putting forth the effort to make these videos and for putting that positive grind mentality out there. It really does help. It's my turn to practice now
i dont usually subscribe but i wanted to thank you for sharing this techniques and practices. +1 subscriber
Wow!! Please don’t give up on this series mate, you’re helping me and I’m sure lots of other people also. This is such a good roadmap of what, when and how to learn stuff to get better. Thanks a lot!
damn rlly nice videos, good editing too. You're giving me some inspiration to start recording my progress too
what guitar model/color is that?
Wow, I'm thrilled by this episode and especially your journey. Left immediatly a subscribed. :D
He's the One!
This sounds so cool
Amazing and that nice background!
Great video. subbed for more
Dude the video completely gets me. I'm nowhere near where you are now, but I already have similar difficulties and especially thoughts when playing. Same situation with “had lessons 15 years ago” but never really progressed and focused on theory for a long time until a few weeks ago now. So keep on going bro, you inspire me with such videos a lot. And remember, discipline and consistency is EVERYTHING! By the way, regarding courses - regardless of the fact that you can probably find 99% of everything for free on the internet, I've heard a lot of good things about Tomo Fujita “Guitar Wisdom”. He doesn't seem to be a friend of memorizing just "scales" and offers a huge amount of content for what I think is a fair monthly fee, which is precisely about combining music theory more with practice, e.g. through intervals as you described, etc.
Perfect pitch
Thoughts about “ starting from the 3” instead of the root ? Say in a 1-4-5 progression after four bars of 1 chord I want to go to the 4 chord but start on the 3 of the four chord … to be facile I’m thinking I should learn intervals from the 3 as well as the 1 … thoughts anyone ?
EXACTLY where I am now. Working the Circle of Fourths root notes then expanding into the interval connections. Excellent exposition on your part.
@TomNormanMusic Did you buy the complete Tom Quale course or just the app? $149 is a lot of money for the whole course. Thanks.
@mollyp.sasser223 3 weeks ago (Att'n T: Headstock vaulted into upper-right corner, camera BELOW the neck shot, make for fingers covering strings/frets, hence takes more time to decipher fingerings. Please note corrections made by Jack Ruch and other Utoob instructors : straight-on medium shot of horizontal neck proves much more effective i.e. USEFUL presentation of valuable information Thanks!)
I really dig the guitar tone. Mind telling me what amp/settings its at? Good luck on your journey!
Ok you loosing me What were you actually doing for 30 years then ? So you know the numbers , your talking like your trying to teach something, when you should be a lot more humble , doesn’t matter who’s course you studied. I’m 70 years old been playing for 5 years no lessons just information from you tube . Personally , if you’ve been playing for 20 years honestly speaking you should be way better.
I think you might be wrong in your assessment that anyone should be ‘better’ after a certain amount of time; Everyone learns at different rates, playing (as he mentioned) doesn’t necessarily equate to study or the retaining of knowledge as such…and maybe like me, he’s dedicated years to learning songs and not theory (which can most certainly help, but doesn’t give you the tools or awareness to have fretboard knowledge or improvisation skills)…he also acknowledges that he’s welcoming you to join him on his own learning journey and discovery, which is why he’s address the camera in a teachers tone…he’s recording this primarily for himself, which is incredibly helpful to learning and recapping and memorising (it’s nothing to do with being humble) it’s being helpful for his future self and anyone else along for the ride… Sorry for the long reply haha…thought I’d offer my perspective to your, what I felt was, slightly misunderstood response.
I am a musician of 50 years. Playing in bands and writing songs mostly by ear. This pathway that you have chosen seems like a good place for me to actually start "The knowledge"., so I will also be able to play what I hear without fault. I will be watching and following your progress with anticipation. Thanks for doing this and sharing your journey.
You're doing great, you sound awesome, and you and I are at the same point in our journey and I'm 59! Keep at it!
Oh man we're almost the exact same person in regards to guitar and where we're currently at. Things are changing in my playing I can tell. Intervals have been huge. The other ground breaking thing I've found for myself is identifying scale degrees over a constant drone (specifically max konyi's channel) so that I can recognize "hey thats the 6", and the intervals are going from random sounds to little friends that I can recognize and say hello to lol. It's weird, they start to just become familiar and you just know "oh I'm hearing a 2 that wants to resolve to 1"
Do you mind linking the app youre using to learn from?
I just know the sound of the notes in relationship to the root.... I don't know names or numbers.... I play very well in my opinion 🤷
You play by ear and that's awesome. Something I definitely need to practice more. But not knowing the notes/intervals is definitely limiting if you want to communicate with other musicians. But to each their own and if that's not your goal, more power to you. I believe it's important to just be making music, and there's no right or wrong.
Interestingly, I’m doing Bulletproof along with using the Solo app too. Did you complete Bulletproof? It seems like you’re focusing much more on 2 point intervals. You haven’t mentioned triads or anything from Bulletproof in your practicing. I’m curious as to how you see them in comparison to helping your advancement because you sure look like you’re moving ahead.
What do you think about Tom system , when it’s come to chords playing and learning . I think, his method are great to play and improvise melody, but what to do with chords and harmony
Interesting to follow your progress and your journey. I'm only 4 years into the guitar and I'm way less advanced than you are technically on the guitar, while I'm rather advanced on the theory. At the moment I'm trying to make sense of it all, connect the dots, and actually put it to work on the fretboard. I also follow Tom Quayle and Ross Campbell among others so it was easy to relate. Thanks for sharing
Love these vids 🙏
don't stop!!
Keep it up my guy! On the same exacty journey and get just as frustrated every night lol. Do you have any specific videos on how to get better at learning the scales from an interval perspective?
Visualise the chord shapes and relay back to yourself what the intervals are that are found within it, for example an A minor chord is A C E (A is 1 C is the minor 3rd and E is the 5th) each interval gives its own colour against the chord allowing you to experiment playing with the colours and providing extended harmonic context, hope this helps :), you can also count through your minor scale to find all the possible intervals which go from 1-7 before repeating again.
this amazing bro
Just watched your first two vids. The improv at the end of this one sounds great! I already have the 2 point system course and the bulletproof guitar course, but haven’t had the chance to start them yet. With your knowledge and hindsight now, what order would you recommend them in? Or would you mix and do some of both simultaneously? Thanks and I’m really enjoying this series so far!
This is great Tom! Your honest and open approach is refreshing… and your playing is nice on the ear. Looking forward to seeing how the world of intervals unfolds…
I have both of these courses but have yet to be able to really dig into them. Do you think spending some time dedicated to the 2-point system before bulletproof guitar would be good, or do you stick by the order you did it?
I’m with you on (1) having only recently been practicing consistently and (2) working with Ross Campbell’s course. Really working on the fretboard visualization - I’m convinced that’s the key.
Did you do any ear training work in your total guitar journey, i feel like ear training stuff isnt talked about enough
Loved the improv at the end, i just started working on arpegios as well
Did you already memorized the 5 box shapes of the scale on the fretboard ? Or you are starting from zero with the intervals? And is nice too know someone else that is not afraid to show mistakes while is playing is a lot more organic the video, thanks
This is an interesting question. I learnt this from one of martin miller lesson books, in which he explains 5 box shapes for each arpeggios. Took a while to finally memorise them all, and slowly I realise the intervalic connection on all those shapes. It doesnt matter if you start with understanding the interval concept first or the 5 box shape first, at the end you’ll be able to connect the dots
Yes! This is exactly what I need to practice as well. Keep it up man.
