Can anyone explain why step to step increase in frequency is used here? Linear increase or exponential increase would make sense, but why step to step? Wouldn't step to step change have impact on slip of the motor?

How does a train do this? I kinda experience the same thing at the MTA when a subway train departs the screeching sounds a little melodic.
Copied from @radischn5269 Well the short version is: "Variable-frequency drive" - Its basically the electrical equivalent of you reving up your combustion engine. Electric engines have vibrations or humming, and when accelerating the humming differs in sound. You could have a single note going higher and higher or you can set the frequencies to step up like a tone ladder in hard steps. You hear the last tone is hold for long time and then gradually getting even higher as they stop using the hard steps there.

The sound is made by the converters of the electric motors
The sound is caused by the magnetostriction of the stator of the traction motors and determined by the PWM output of the traction inverters(VVVF)
