New Bordeaux Varietals: Preparing for Climate Change
At the 2022 Commanderie de Bordeaux Educateurs’ Forum, David Valdez (Educateur, Los Angeles) presented six new experimental varieties approved for Bordeaux in 2021 by the INAO. These grapes were selected after testing 52 varieties, in order to address ongoing threats to viticulture and viniculture posed by climate change: red grapes Arinarnoa, Castets, Marselan, and Touriga Nacional; and white grapes Alvarinho (Albarino) and Liliorila. Concomitant with his discussion of the characteristics, origins and distributions of each varietal (e.g. Marselan from Uruguay resulted from a 1961 cross between grenache and cabernet sauvignon, and contributes aroma and color), there was a tasting of five ...

    Duhart-Milon has really picked up the pace since their 2009 vintage. Their wines from the 90's are extremely disappointing and the '05 was uninspiring. Their 2010 is one of the best Bordeaux expressions I've ever had. Definitely one to watch.

    2016 was the first truly good vintage in almost a decade. You should be able to easily tell the difference with the minimum of sampling.

    I've been stocking up on any 2016's that I can find locally that haven't already been stashed away. There are levels of "better", but there is no "bad" from that year, and they are just now starting to come in to their drinking years. Even the "lower" $25-$35 bottles are going to be hunted by everyone soon. It was a good year for everyone, regardless of the price.

    Since many flowers/plants are primary aromas, how come vanilla is only tertiary?

    • @d-arkh
      @d-arkh 3 года назад

      Vanilla (almost always) comes from the oak barrel aging. It is not a naturally developed aroma of the wine thus it can't be a primary or even secondary note.
