I was too young to run during the hay-days of this race. I was always concerned about the cold... if anyone recalls the "ice age" we were headed for back then, but I wanted to do this more than anything. By the time I was old enough, it just wasn't the same and I lost interest. But every year, I'd tune into WCCO to get the standings and root for Polaris sleds. We'd buy newspapers too, making a scrapbook of the races. No idea where it is today. Cool video! Great story!

It must have been pretty cold that day, what with the squeeky snow under foot!! Thanks for the great vid. Would have liked it more if you would have done close up shot of the hoods of the odd ball brands so we could have known what they were. I did see a couple of Sno Bug's.

When they started putting the skis in front of the track, and the motor on top of the skis, that's when snomobilling really started to take off. I think I need a Grain Belt.

My dad used to sell Sno-Jet snowmobiles in Sheboygan, WI back in the early 70's and it's been quite nice to see a few of them again, i thank you for that. One time they let me drive a 340 Thunder-Jet when i was in 4th grade. I sat on it with the motor running, almost as scared as i was excited. I started tapping the throttle and watching the tac bounce up and down, it wouldn't move at all until the motor got up over 5000 rpm's and that's right about when i hit Full Throttle! The front end flew up in the air, my hands fell off of the handle bars, and i was left laying on the trail as the damn thing went flying down along side the railroad tracks with No Body on it. They didn't let me drive That One again.

At 11:51 that may have been me, the spring dropped through the worn out ski so I was taking the ski off and I had almost ripped the hood completely off with an encounter when I hit a crossing earlier. Great vid brought back lots of memories.

What kind of speeds were they capable of ?

It would have been impressive if you left the treadmill together and ran on it to run the light, you could run the treadmill motor faster than the setup here.

What's wrong with using a battery to run the light off the motor stator?

Any "one wire" "self exciting" automotive alternator will produce 14 volts with or without a battery attached.

If you added an automotive voltage regulator, it will keep the voltage the same.

holy shit son, take the gov springs out and repace them with weaker ones. that thing is going to explode! I think it needs timed too, sparks shouldn't be shooting out the exhaust.
