Would you recommend fx30 over a73 for documentary?

they need to incorporate camera controls on the grips

how is the fx30 for photo stills? how would this compare to a lumix g7, g9ii or even a blackmagic cube? is the fx30 weatherized? I want to document travels by bicycle and am having a difficult time choosing gear. a phone and action4 can only get me so far. an em1 iii seems like a good value in comparison. A DJI Zenmuse with manual controls would be amazing.

I use (and love) that same V-Mount battery plate- but instead of the rods I actually put on a V-Mount battery - it provides my 'chest pad' while also adding a bit of weight to the camera (for stability)- and I power both the camera and the monitor off of the battery - so win/win/win... a bit smaller setup than with the rods, and I can leave it fully assembled in my run-n-gun bag (a small 'doctor' style Sachtler).

Interesting timing you have! I just shot a short doc with a DOP trying to get into the dutch film academy and they were using an FX3 with this feature! I think it's a great tool for corporate and docu style filming! when it comes to filming sometimes you just want practicality over getting the best image possible. I did honestly feel like the clear image zoom had a bit of coloration. Not enough to throw me off but clear image zoom didn't convince me that we can move on from picking proper lenses in fiction. (Which I know isn't the point of your video but something that is interesting to consider with this kind of technology) Intresting tests all things considered and again great timing ;)

My attempt to understand the science: The FX30 uses a 6K sensor, which down-samples to 4K or 1080p in video recording. My theory is that when using Clear Image Zoom, the camera crops in to use a smaller portion of the sensor, essentially using the native 4k resolution of the camera when fully zoomed in at 1.5x

Its not really a new feature my old Panasonic Lumix GH2 kind of has this feature. The GH2 is a 16 megapixel camera. And you can punch in and use a small part of the sensor if you need more reach. 1080p is almost 2 megapixels.

Good to upload your backlog, mate! It shows that even a nikkon can make nice footage if you know how to work with it. 😂

I get the saboteur analogy with an artistic pursuit where if you give yourself fully to it you feel you might screw it up and you sabotage your pursuit even though it brings genuine joy…it’s a strange dichotomy. I feel it every time I look at my cameras! Btw that was a hell of a good looking spoon he carved!
