      @@Onigirli enjoying the story. He sought to "restore the Republic." A beautiful dream, but even in the story, much less in history, the Roman republic was never restored. Given the reality that the principate was a successful means of governing the Roman empire, Claudius could have chosen older and more experienced candidates for his successor.

    Sounds exactly what is going on in the US right now. I've known for years that the repugs were corrupt but wow! It's far worse than anyone imagined. It's now July 2022. Treason. Insurrection. All instigated and egged on by the so called Leader of the free world. Don the Con.

    Here we have the moment when Claudius realizes that the corruption is such that it’s reversible only by a thorough, catastrophic cleansing of the slate akin to Noah’s Flood. Thus all the corruption must be allowed to flourish, to “hatch out,” in order to hasten this cleansing.

    And there is no comparison between the lived experiences of being gay and being Black. The most clear distinction is how a gay person can pass as straight whenever the need to hide comes about. A Black person can never pass as white---and immeasurable amount of that difference is profound enough. Having said that, I'm not trying to diminish the struggles of gays--by no means.

    I loved the inclusivity number. There is too much to unpack to comment fully. It can be true that Broadway is so welcoming and also full of gatekeeping. There are racial barriers on Broadway. Broadway is not immune from white supremacy culture. And, I have to push back on comments implying the idea of giving or handing out jobs and productions to people of color as well as implication that they aren't writing and designing. They are not asking for the former, and they are doing the former. There is much more to be said to all of that.

    Britton Smith accepted the Special Tony for Broadway Advocacy Coalition. I loved his speech--it was very sincere. It was full of great emotion given the culmination after so many moments in the past 18 months alone. I imagine it was also very vulnerable for him as he was speaking truth to a very powerful room. I have learned a lot from online forums this group has presented, so I was ecstatic that they were honored.

    You are right to call out the disparity in the diversity of winners. I hope all who won were truly the best in their category, but it did feel like a disconnect--and that is worth discussing. So, I thank you for it.

    They could have also cast Hannigan and Rooster with one being a white actor, and the other being Black--and I don't say that to be about color blind casting (which is a false concept), but to suggest that their family could have that dynamic perhaps. But in any event, that is all very fun casting, and I can't wait to see how the show turns out. :)

  • @johnraymondbarker4
    @johnraymondbarker4 3 года назад

    Little Shop of Horrors: Well, the worst action might have been doing the show with a 100% white cast. This is an example of not doing the work to find the talent that is surely available or deliberately choosing to be racist. There is no excuse for that. If it's an accident, it's a huge example of white privilege or carelessness or don't give a crapness or lazyness. and THAT is why the Academy is making it's new rule. THAT's why the New Deal For Broadway is necessary.

    We had this conversation with my agency-I believe it’s only a matter of wanting to make sure stories about gay people are being told with actors who authentically understand that experience. The same for transgender characters. I don’t know if I agree that a straight person can’t tell a gay person’s story. But I think this is a correction until there is truly equity, especially with regards to representation.

  • @johnraymondbarker4

    I would think the creatives teams can’t be 100% white. Not that they have to have a specific percentage of each non-white group. The thing is-it’s really not hard to find qualified people of color to work on the creative team, which is a large number of people.
