Hey! I'm Chase and I produce music under the name Duskmos in Austin, TX. I created this channel to highlight some of the gear and various equipment I use in making music, and to demonstrate effects pedals and how they help form and reshape sounds into something unique. In a world with so many options for gear available to musicians with all types of budgets, but also fewer and fewer places to see and hear those pieces of gear in person, I hope my content is useful in helping you decide if something is right for you and your setup.
If you're a pedal or instrument builder or manufacturer, and would like to get in touch about sending something my way for demo or review, please do so at the email address below.

Any idea how this compares to the sound of the OTO BOUM?
Yeah! I have a few in-depth videos on the BOUM as well. Consider this "BOUM Lite" haha. This is very much mixer-first, compression and drive second - great bonus features but I probably wouldn't suggest BEBE if you don't really need a mixer but want BOUM-like sounds. BOUM very much focuses on the drive and compression characteristics, can get quite a bit wilder, and adds master filtering, emphasizing all of those over any sort of mixing for sure. The combo would be stellar. =)
I don't really need a desktop mixer, but I'm getting GAS anyways.
haha happens to us all!
Slavoj Žižek lol
Loll samples of him speaking come in the default memory of the Microgranny from the factory 😆 it’s not quite as random as it seems haha
Made in Paris!
Pretty awesome! 🇫🇷
Should have put NVMe in the new version
Definitely agree!
Thanks for the video! I'm a little wary of mini-jacks and would be curious to know if it doesn't affect the dynamics? (the Volca Toys left a bad memory in this regard)
Shouldn’t *at all*! The volcas are limited in their own way by their components, but the sonic difference between a high quality 1/4” jack vs a high quality 1/8”/3.5mm minijack should be zero. The Bebe sounds great :)
Too bad this is not battery powered, in addition to it being plugged in to a wall. This could have been a good little mixer to pair with an SP 404 mk 2 and OG Novation Circuit in an outdoor setting
Battery power would have been awesome, though I think batteries in an analog mixer might be tough when it comes to noise - though I'm no expert. I'm pretty pleased with it as-is, but even more portable is always cool!
Sounds absolutely gorgeous
It really does - pretty unbelievable!
great vid. can you sendthe FX I and II of the tx 6 out the auxillary?
Not having a real send/return loop was what killed it for me. By real I mean being able to control how much of a channel goes to the alt out and also keeping the channel still on the main out while also sending a percentage of it to the alt out. Had pre-ordered this and cancelled the order.
Yeah for sure, I totally get you - using the alt out is definitely a bit of a "hack" and a bit of a sacrifice to use it in a send/return scenario. Glad to have the alt out at least but yeah, not the same. Thanks for the comment!
@ 100% agree that having an alt out is still a win and for some performance setups, that’s really all you need. Thanks for a great video as always!
It sounds very good.I got lost between Bebe and boum and chose boum.I would also like to see a comparison video between Polyend press and chase bliss clean.Thank you for the wonderful video🫶
how do you like the boum? I was leaning towards it first but after this I might be sliding towards the bebe
Quite different beasts for sure, both great though. I've done a few videos on the BOUM too. It has more control over parameters and different flavor, and of course no mixing capability. If you wanted to stay in the OTO fam, and you want saturation and comp more than anything, I'd go for the BOUM. If you want a less flexible version of sat/comp, but want a mixer too, then by all means the BEBE is the better choice. Just depends on your needs. BEBE into BOUM would be epic though lol.
Appreciate the kind words - and I may check out Clean, big Chase Bliss fan too! 👏
nice review, mine has just arrived and I’m about to plug it in, I’m a huge fan of Oto and like all their gear 👌🏼
Awesome! Let me know what you think of it! ...and thank you! =)
I’ve been debating picking up one of these mixers since it came out. You just pushed me a little closer! Oto stuff is 🔥🔥🔥
Big fan here too (obviously haha). I'd say it's worth a shot. Find a good retailer with a friendly return policy and give it a whirl. Nothing like actually getting hands on to know how you'll really feel about it. If you do go for it, lemme know, curious to see what you think!
real question: this or the tx-6 if you had to pick one?
Oh mannnnnn that's so tough! TX-6 wins on size and extra features (interface, recording, extra fx) and I think BEBE wins on sound (by a small margin, both are great) but being analog, and with such a sturdy build (TX-6 is solid too but it feels like you need to be more delicate with it than the BEBE). I think if someone needs an interface/recorder, and space/portability/battery power are important, the TX-6 would win for sure. If you have the (slightly more, it's still small) space and don't need the battery powered portability or interface or recording part - and were hauling a mixer to gigs, I think the BEBE. I see a use-case for both in my life in addition to my studio mixer too (Model 1.4) lol. Ask me again in 6mo. :laughing-face:
@@Duskmos yeah, i'm glad you said that about the BEBE sound. It also seems more playable/immediate. also please never review the Nightverb
Agreed! Why not the nightverb? I haven’t really pursued checking one out anyway, but curious why you’d say so lol 😆
@@Duskmos dude because then i would have to buy one 🤑
@@naa-video bahaha ok ok, you're safe - for now
Been waiting for a video on the BeBe since it came out- Thanks so much for the in depth review- Great job!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's absolutely a solid option. Thanks for the kind words too! =)
Wow beautiful! Do you see too much overlap between Qi Etherealizer and Slöer?
It's just a beauty-maker haha right? I can't say that I do see too much overlap. Slöer is more of a vibrato verb (I have a video on it as well!), but Qi has the added granular "sprinkles" on top which really make the pedal for me. I guess it depends on what you prefer to use it for. If you're mainly using it for the reverb alone, maybe there is a bit more overlap. Once you thrown in the granular bits though, then it's a whole new ballgame. For me, the Qi would be the one to buy, no question - but that's because I'd absolutely be using the granular portion of the pedal most of the time. Hope this helps!
Thank you for the review! The thing sounds nice! Do you know if the Compressor has a build in „low end relax sidechain filter“ of kinds or does it simply compress the signal full range and thats that? Cause from what you say that it is hard to get to pump it sounds to me that there could be a sc filter for the lows? Thinking of buying this but i will 100% certainly create some kind of skin with a dark color for the top cause this color is eye cancer in the long run.
lol @ "eye cancer" - yeah the pink is quite a shocker haha. I'd have to admit I'm no expert on compression, and I haven't used it for long enough to have my ear dialed into what's going on with the compressor with that much detail, but you're definitely not going to get that in-your-face kind of side-chaining/ducking going on. It's intended to be a whole mix compression so it is fairly "gentle" - ultimately I see it more as a solid "utility" over an "effect" if that makes sense. Hope that helps a bit. I'll have more to say about it after I get more time with it though! Hit me up again later haha.
THANK YOU for this incredibly thorough use case for the Cherie. Big OTO fanboy here, but I cannot understand how there's no aux send on this, especially given that OTO has world class stand alone effects boxes... in Setup 1, if you accidentally MUTE'd the BAM channel, it would feedback on itself, right? You point this out in Setup 2. Whatever... will probably still buy!!
Yes! I probably should've mentioned that haha, but yeah it would. I had the BAM in "studio mode" where it only would output the "wet" audio, so while it would technically feedback on itself, I guess it wouldn't matter because it is only returning the effected audio, not the input - but then if you're hitting the input with other channels, then it would def "stack up" - I guess it gets a little tricky working this way lol.
I don5 know the lack of a tradition send and return is a head scratcher for me and mini jacks seems very specific. I’m not to bothered by the metering personally given its likely use case
Yeahhh it would be nice for sure to have a traditional send/return! Mini jacks are definitely a choice, but I think ultimately it doesn't really matter as long as you can handle having the proper cables at the ready. I'm personally starting to really welcome slimline cables and minijacks to be honest!
Very nice video! Makes me wanting one! For this sort of set up, it glues up the mix extremely well. I hope this is the start of an era with small mixers for synth and drum machine sets. Bebe will disrupt.
Thank you! I agree on all points haha.
I dig this groove
Hey thank you! =)
I am content with mine. The 3.5mm conversion is annoying if you use it with synths, I also use it with Eurorack, so in overall I love it.
Yeah definitely something to adjust to, but having all the TE 1/4" to 3.5mm cables from my TX-6 makes it really easy to integrate for me. I'm digging using minijack these days. 1/4" of course feels more legit but slim cables are kinda nice haha.
I've had the mixer with me for almost a year now. And what can I say, it has completely changed my music. I work without a DAW and this little mixer has become the centrepiece of my sound. I never thought a mixer could sound so good. Thanks for the test and I wonder why this fine little channel doesn't have more viewers.
I'm glad you've been enjoying it! I agree it adds a great coloration to the sound. I plan on using mine for a few projects and I'm really excited to see how it goes! Appreciate the kind words. =)
immediate Yes! looking forward to its arrival stateside
Perfect Circuit has them in stock right now! =)
@@Duskmoshaha no way, i picked it up from the oto shoppe late last night. all good. many thanks!
The Hands Are Speaking.
They've got a lot to say!
I'm sorry, but allow me to disagree. This box looks like a mixer someone ordered from Temu. This is a technically limited mixer which was deliberately downgraded to accommodate a quirky pink design. When you look at Allen & Heath, Tascam, Livetrak and even Behringer mixers, come on, this unit doesn't make any sense.
yes it does, behringer lol. this is more of a crossover I think from their desktop pedal boxes and a mixer. + higher quality parts as well. but feel free to disagree and hate pink even more.
@PSILOPHL I don't hate pink, and yes, behringer primes for low quality components in their lower range, but this mixer has quite a few cons for the hefty price tag, namely the sheer lack of connectivity, the lack of routing possibilities, no db reference, a useless meter which is only a funny light, I mean, from a sound engineering connectivity perspective for any performing artist this is extremely limited. Trying to upmarket a cute little instagram friendly mixer that will go straight to Reverb as soon as you hit all these obvious connectivity limitations.
@@miguel_orama I like your positive attitude. You sound like a nice, sensitive person.
Allow me to disagree, this little thing I actually a very capable and focused analog mixer for synths, and sounds great because of the high quality components. I use it as my main mixer, having two sub mixers connect to it in addition to my main instruments. Like the other OTO devices, it really glues everything together, I love it. I also use the aux send to effects and input 5 as return. I use the headphone out to connect to a sampler / looper / mangler (s4), and input 6 as return for that if I do live processing or want to play back the loop / track. It can be used in a lot of ways, but it does not pretend to be a generic mixer like the ones you mention.
@@miguel_orama it might not be the right mixer for you, but I don't get the hate
:) knew you’d get here in the end...now running 3 of them!
That’s wild!!
@@Duskmosis that Latin for “ridiculous”? Because it is. Jokes aside, having that tuned tilt EQ with a one knobbie comp was a wishlist must for me for years, and my ear clearly agrees with the designers in their choices too
@@Farold_Haltermeyer Clearly! Haha that's great. Gotta love it when dream gear becomes reality gear haha. 🙌
Funny, I got mine a week ago and was looking forever for some info. It's a cool little machine that does everything I need, thanks for doing a video about it! Also using the AUX as a SEND is brilliant, I didn't think of that!
"It has onboard gain and overdrive" cool "there's compressor" nice "there's bliss" excuse me??
Oh you don’t know about bliss? You gotta get blissed mannnnn haha jk jk 😆
@@Duskmos Haha I enjoyed the review, very good work! The saturation is delicious! 1/8" on the master output is wild tho!
Nooooo wayyyy
Would like an expanded version with a multitrack recorder, proper aux routing and returns, and option to hard clip into a channel limiter too!
That would be sick!
Just a couple of ADAT outputs to run to the interface would be nice
@@Space_pulse lol
@@SnaFOo75lol is that too much to ask for?
My brain is wondering how I can run my guitar through this and sample it into Polyend Tracker +…🧐
Shouldn’t be a problem! You may need to boost your level a bit but absolutely doable 😎
Thank you for doing this video. I too purchased a DX in the last 6 months for almost a steal with the exact same issues and have been meaning to tackle this project. Seeing this video gave me the kick in the ass I needed. Cheers!
Congrats! Hopefully you’ll have a nicely working unit soon, but def reach out if you need any help with anything, but if it’s these issues, it’s def pretty straightforward 🙌
That table is so cool. Where did you get it?
Haha thanks! I really like it too - although it’s actually a mat that I got from a company called Slash/Objects annnnd they also don’t make them anymore!
The design appears to have been inspired by the Chroma Console. Sounds beautiful, and seems ideal for ambient soundscapes 💫
Very ideal for ambient soundscapes! I wouldn’t say it’s thaaat related to Chroma Console. That one tends to get a bit noisier with the drive and saturation type modes, but this one excels at the lovely stuff haha. Both are sweet, but I’d definitely reach for them for different purposes I think. Both great choices! Can’t go wrong. 😎
@ I was saying it’s similar in that there’s 4 effects side by side with 3 parameter settings in a stereo unit.
@Ghoopty You’re def right about that :) I want more of this format haha
price is whack
It definitely isn’t inexpensive, but you could also spend $199ea on 4 different pedals to do this (and end up spending more), so it kinda depends on what you already have or what you might need. I hear ya though. It’s tough when pedals are as much or more than some instruments even. Out of curiosity, what do you think it should cost?
jfc preordered
Haha 😆 so good right? I’m sure you’re gonna love it
The struggle not to do the same is so darn hard 😅😅😅😅
I really love your hypnotic loops 🙏
Thank you! These were particularly so! 😵💫
I decided not to buy new effects this year. It's only January!
Lollll the temptation is real. You could work around that with some mental gymnastics and sell a couple you already have - that way it's a "trade" haha. I recently had to face some hard decisions like that myself (sold off some things to order an OP-XY!)
I think, maybe I could trade my Microcosm for this. These things has their district character. Maybe it's not wrong to refresh the sound… and not just buying another not-so-cheap desk space eater ;)
Oh man they do occupy similar territory, thats a tough call though! Microcosm gets more weird (if you want that), and so far I’d say this just stays pretty (mostly) haha
😂
The design, as the sound, it's so so beautiful.
Couldn't agree more! It's so good haha.
What i really loved on this vid is how gentle you treat this vintage drum machine, mine does not turn on, havent opened the case yet though, are there any fuses around ?
I am one of those people that treat everything I own with a lot of respect, so my gear alllllways stays mint. So when you're talking about something vintage I always take extra care haha. Granted this is probably the opposite of delicate to have made it 40+ years in the world, but still! Sorry to hear yours doesn't turn on. I did some digging and it looks like there is a fuse hidden under a shield behind the transformer for the power supply, but I'm definitely no expert. I also found a link to some schematics for the DX if that helps! www.polynominal.com/site/studio/gear/drum/Oberheim_Dx/oberheim-dx-service-manual.pdf
Well, now I need that pedal.
Haha it's pretty legit! If you're in the market for a stereo delay it's gotta be high on the list for sure. Thanks for checking out the vid! =)
@@Duskmos I am indeed, sir. Thank you for all the information, you have a new subscriber 🖤
@OneMorningSongs Welcome to the crew! 🙌
Nope... Total waste of money... Looks like Hologram has lost their innovative edge and got desperate to put something out... People are dumping them now and can't get their money back because their resale value has taken a nose dive...
Hm I'd have to disagree, I quite like it. Also, nose dive? Looking at Reverb sold listings and most of them sell for about $20-30 off retail (so 10% off or less). I personally like this one quite a bit more than the Microcosm, but of course to each their own.
Can't stand those overpriced plastic things. On the other hand, nice UA product.
You talking about the OP-1? The body of it is aluminum and quite dense, and it feels way more premium than you'd imagine. Have you honestly checked one out in person? I feel like most people would change their tune once they do. Yes, these full sized UA pedals are insane quality - and my experiences with them so far are great (I have a few more I'm hoping to check out, so far just this and the MAX). To me they feel like such a win on both build and sound, though we knew they'd do great with the sound lol.
@Duskmos yes, I tried a few TE products and I can't really digest them. In general, I don't like the fashion of having synths and such being made into toys. Btw I hope you didn't take my moaning personally, of course, nothing to do with you 😊 cheers
@@donniecatalano Not at all! I'm just an advocate for people trying things out before they rush to judge (in case that was you haha, clearly not). I mean that on both ends of the spectrum too, like jumping on hype trains is just as silly ("hate trains"? haha) and I feel like TE gets a lot of hate from people because of so many reasons. I think it's a much more serious tool than people give it credit for. I wonder if people would feel the same way if you had to plug it in and it had full size keys? People don't seem to mind paying $2k for large format synths which also have plastic keys haha. I'm glad there are so many options out there. The OP-1 works out amazingly for doing demos because it actually (mostly) fits on screen and has a good sound and easy looping ability - all really useful things for my use case. Anyway, not trying to convert you haha. I'm glad not everyone likes the same things, that way we can try all kinds of new approaches to gear and brands keep making cool stuff. ✌
@Duskmos thank you for taking the time to reply to me with such a nice answer, we come from different backgrounds and have different tastes... I will gladly keep my full sized keyboards and rack synths, even if they are bulky and a bit ugly in design 😊 have a nice weekend sir.
@donniecatalano No problem! I'm currently trying to make space for my Oberheim DX - that's also a lot of bulk for a few drum samples haha 😅 Have a good one!
Is it crazy that I think this thing sounds generic? Admittedly, I’m turned off by the design of their pedals and audio interface, they’re slick but in a gross early 00s kind of way but people always seem to like their products. I don’t know… I’m still not fucking with them. Having said all that, I certainly wouldn’t say they make a bad product, but it’s not doing anything for me.
Haha oh man, I see where you're coming from but I'm a fan. TBH I think a lot of it comes down to the build quality of it all. I've have an Apollo Twin forever and it's been rock solid, and I love the big knob interface and all that. This line of pedals are all super super solid chunks too haha. Now, as far as this sounding generic, I think I can agree that it doesn't exactly sound "special" but I think it nails what it sets out to do. I mostly like it for the way it handles feedback oscillations and the build quality, which makes me kinda want one for that alone but I have so many great stereo delays that it would be super hard to justify.
Wonderful!! Happy to see a pedal I can easily get in Europe. Great video!
Might sound silly, but though I love this device, there is just one thing that bothers me, but a lot ! It's that I have to do Ninja combos in order to do tasks that should be very simple on any tracker, such as copying/pasting, adding/deleting/moving lines. Some months before the :02 release, I suggested through the discord and maybe on the fb page to add R1/L1/R2/L2 type buttons to be added so as to do the selecting, copying, deleting, inserting without having to do combos. The community has firmly rejected these and kinda laughed at me. One other thing that bothers me a bit is that, as this has this powerful tool which is tables, they are usually suggested as a workaround solution to many things I wish were cooked-into the OS, like side-chain or performance (seq/arp) related stuff. Things that could be made simpler I believe if implemented in some way for the use the lazy ones, who might never really master tables, because we just want to make music without scratching our head (could even be based on preset/template automations driven by tables in the background as long as it's made simple sufficiently simple to use). Overall, all of what I don't like about it is due to the legacy of it and many users who were already used to LSDJ and feel confortable with tables, key combos etc... And the fact it is produced in very limited quantities I believe does not help as this product will probably never need to expand its market to broader audience than the legacy LSDJ aficionados. Otherwise everything else is close to perfection : the hardware, the looks of the UI, how it sounds, the flexibility. And the developer is adding features you wouldn't even imagine. I'm also a bit frustrated by how good and bad this can be for a person like me at the same time. For those who are saying that tracker's aren't made for everyone, have a look at the Polyend Tracker, honestly these guys have made a tremendous job in making a tracker very very easy to use, you don't even have to read the manual or gain muscle memory. I prefer the sound engines and the hardware of the M8 by far though.
Its expensive but sounds good and is fun. I like all the LFOs and side chain/ threshold dynamics it can apply to the FX. It creates a ton of movement.
I agree with all points!
@ I wish I understood how to use Elektron’s LFOs better though. “-127 to +127” isn’t much to go on and it’s one of the few things I skipped in the manuals
@@R3ND3RR0R Understandable! In "Elektronspeak" +/- 127 is basically +/- 100% of any parameter, so it's kinda just a universal "value range"
First look? These came out in April of 2023. Happy to see it getting more attention with synths though. I've tried just about every Space Echo emulating pedal and this is by far my favorite.
First look for my man Duskmos
Totally. I mean my first look haha. My Primer series is for people getting their first looks at the pedals too. But yeah maybe that's a tad misleading? Anyway I agree, I loved it and I think I'll probably be buying my own, even though I have a lot of great delays but this one just nails it. Plus the build on these are great. Thanks for your comment!
@ Thanks for your video!
Such a handsome machine. Sounds nice, would love that boi with some midi.
I agree! The ones with factory midi have the midi-related features printed on the top case and it looks ugly, so adding midi to this one preserve the good looks of the original without sacrificing the functionality (although I don't love the ports in the side, but it works). This is my second one I've owned (the first was super brief) - I scored one on eBay in like 2018 but it arrived half smashed and wasn't working properly, so I had to return it. I've had so many HEAVY vintage boxes arrive terribly packaged over the years, but anyway haha. Took me a few years to find another one of these at a good enough price to pull the trigger, but this one fit the bill. It's physically massive, and fairly limited by today's standards, but it's got a cool sound and definitely has some mojo.
@@Duskmos It's really all about the mojo at the end of the day. It certainly didn't hold people back!
