I would be worried to put much heavier strings on it, being an acoustic bass. I wouldn't want them to pull up the bridge. A truss rod adjustment can raise the action if the buzz is too much. I end up EQing out most of that high frequency stuff with a low pass filter when mixing it.

It actually was in tune, but the intonation was off. A new set of strings helped.

I actually like it a lot. The feel of the neck and body are smooth. The sound is clean and natural. I would say it's a very good value.

Beginner here, luthier put 80/20s on my Yamaha Fs800, bought some phosphor bronzes today, if I don’t like em come string change time I figure I can always swap em out

As I said in the video, this was my first fretless. The video is also recorded on a cell phone, so it does not pick up the bass frequencies well.

Thanks! Yeah, the rounds on acoustic bass have a very particular sound and I can appreciate that not everybody would be into it.

Thanks for the input! There is a lot of noise with the rounds, but I've found that they have nice mid range when recorded and you can roll off the highs to get rid of most of the string noise.

Thanks for the thoughts! I didn't realize that the 4 string had the 32" scale until you mentioned it. This bass is pretty huge, but I'll make the sacrifice to have the low range on that extra 5th string.

@@dannyrio You idea works fine. It’s just that here I Japan the Hipshot costs about ¥20,000 or more so around $150. So I might rethink the way I usually do something like that (exactly as you). Put it in a vise and maybe use a file instead. Easier to see that the file is parallel to the work piece. But your way is offset by taking material away very slowly. You could measure now and then to make sure it’s flat. Sorry, I’m kinda’ of a perfectionist.

@@dannyrio Yeah, I caught that. Again, just being a perfectionist. Or at least putting a bug in your, or others’, ear for future DIY stuff. I’m considering the Hipshot because the Gibson/Epiphone 3-point bridge 1) doesn’t have individual string height adjustments and 2) the distance from the rear of the bridge to the saddles is such that the silks are compressed by the saddles. You’ve answered #1 with your clip. What do you think about the distance in #2?

I've seen the damage from the rounds on fingerboards. However, these coated ones don't seem to be damaging it.

Rounds can wear grooves over long periods and if you're very heavy-handed. The biggest danger, however, is stainless steel windings. Stainless is about twice as hard as non-steel windings, and thus will wear out wood or frets twice as fast. Non-steel and coated strings will be far gentler.

Pretty well. I used it on a bunch of recordings for cover songs and an original on this channel. I have noticed a couple of low spots in the fingerboard which cause buzz. I told Thomann about the problem and they are going to replace it! Great customer service!

Nice! Are the tapes brighter than the flats and how long does the brightness last?

I think the tapes sit somewhere in the middle between flats & bronze, but nearer the flats side. I've had them on for four months and am pretty sure they sound the same as day one. @@dannyrio

Flats are actually easier on the fretboard than rounds. Although, I did not notice any marks from using the rounds either.
