Which party has the best transport policy? General Election 2024
With the election less than a week away, I thought a look at the different major political parties' transport policies would be a good idea. It's a long one!

Bristol: A city whose transport missed the train
Просмотров 67 тыс.3 месяца назад
For a city known for progressiveness, Bristol's transport network is in quite a sorry state. Abandoned train lines, bus lanes costing hundreds of millions, and a sadistic local authority (South Gloucestershire) all paint a rather unpleasant picture of "The Gateway to the West". But it hasn't always been this way, and it doesn't have to be in future, so what can be done to get Bristol's trains a...

Japan's trains have some problems

In-depth guide to the Electrostar - Train Sim World 2
How on earth did this vid come up with "Dal Betty" as a mispronunciation of Dalbeattie?
5:32 You can also check in using your debit card, which every Dutch citizen has. Although, I don't remember whether that was the case when this video was uploaded.
I believe it had just been introduced. I remember seeing posters for it at stations.
As someone who lives in south limburg on the Belgian side, yea the dutchies have it good, although I think it's overrated and good at the same time. It is being praised a lot for being super good, but I miss food service. You can't even get water on the train (you have to get out and go to the station's water tap) which is unfortunate. Also yea it's way too expensive
Another reason a lot of people have cars in Bristol, is that there relatives live in places like Yate, Bradely Stoke, WSM and similar outlying towns. Meaning that they cant rely on public transport to get to there elderly gran in the middle of the night. Whereas if you live in Manchester, Birmingham or London you have night services.
@4:28 no, i'm sorry, part of being a human being and existing in this world is participation. yes, contactless and pay before you board are useful,. but please, let's not raise the idea of non interaction as a positive! People break through there barriers of confidence by exposure, not isolation. You say hello to the bus driver, acknowledge them as a human being, and you get the same back. The idea of a country of self srevice checkouts and never having to speak to a bus driver is an awful concept for the future of humanity. Let's all stare at our phones all day, never speak to each other and not say "cheers drive" to the bus driver. surprised to hear you say this as you seem a reasonable fellow.
I absolutely agree, I meant that it can be awkward to board a bus, get told the fare and then leave. Obviously, interacting with the driver and exchanging greetings is good and important.
when you build unending student halls in the city centre, eating up space then of course there is no need to provide public transport as it would only serve locals.
and no profit in that. if you want to take the number 1 from the top of Clifton to Cabot Circus shopping centre in the city centre it will take you at least an hour. it's a tiny city, car traffic is awful. cycle it, downhill will take 15 minutes. uphill, maybe 35-45
Can we just give a shout-out to someone who probably should be transport secretary! YOU STAND FOR EVERYTHING I DO! :D WE NEED NATIONALISED TRAINS AND EXTRA RURAL BUSES AND TO TAKE CARE OF SHIPS!

How is class 166 better than class 165? They are basically the same.
In this video, you mentioned the seats on the class 700s not being to bad, which is clear evidence why to rank the passenger comfort on the ranking video a 3 and not 1.
A great example of newer trains being more uncomfortable is on the electrostars. Older electrostars such as class 377s have some of the most comfortable seats on any British train, but newer variants such as the 387 have the ironing board design, which is probably the most uncomfortable train seat in the UK. This came even before the 700 which named them the ironing board seat.
I think we should just copy the German transport system, with the exception of high-speed trains. Everything works extremely well between regional and local trains,s bahns, u bahns, trams, buses. Its all super efficient (with the exception of the high speed trains!!!) and tickets cost half as much as public transport in the UK. Transport is divided into regions and often cities, who take responsibilty for the network in their region. We could do that in the UK, each county with it's hub at the biggest city. Would cost a lot of taxpayer money, but as it does it Germany the economic benefits very quickly outweigh the cost.
I definitely would rank the class 700 higher. Their ride quality is actually quite good, which I would personally score a 7 or 8 out of 10. In my opinion, longitudinal seating (like that on class 378 or 710) would score a 1 out of 10, but the 700 would score a 3 out of 10 like the 707. The abundance toilets and first class being an upgrade from standard also helps improve passenger comfort. I do however agree with purpose being a 5 out of 10. Overall, the class 700 would be placed near the start of the middle video, although I do not like their sounds. A train which does have a bad ride quality and should be ranked near this spot would be the 387.
all peps are the best butmy fravrit class pep i 507/8
U called it. Labour won by landslide.
So if you were a middle aged woman using a bicycle to get to work etc, because you can't afford to buy a new car, who would you vote for?
It entirely depends on where. This is more of an issue for local authorities, to be honest, and the Greens are both good for cycle infrastructure and more likely to do well in local elections, so probably them during council elections. But, again, it depends on the political situation in the area.
@@GWVillager thanks for your kind reply, appreciate it 👍
Thank you for your insights 👍 There is bus infrastructure investment going on near me, which I thought would be great, but by widening the junction and speeding up traffic they've made it more difficult and dangerous for anyone walking to it, and nothing to help anyone on a bicycle either. So the planners are either thick, or it was really only intended to make the road faster. It seems we need more local campaign groups more than ever.
If we're putting back old track in Somerset, might as well run the line from Glastonbury to Wells and follow the old strawberry line route to Yatton. The trackbed is still there (from Cheddar) as a bike path and there's been little development that would get in the way. Cheddar and Wells are big tourist destinations and suffer terribly from traffic congestion in summer which would be relieved massively by a half hourly rail service to/from Bristol. It would also significantly improve commuter services as the bus from Wells to Bristol in particular is dreadful.
That could absolutely be done too, but I'm not sure if it would be best to divert the line to Glastonbury via Wells. That would effectively eliminate the possibility of extending the line to Taunton and creating a faster line to the South West.
I have never thought about ferries in that way before! Even in public transport circles they're never bought up as a key part of the system. But I am now annoyed that I can't catch a ferry to Copenhagen...
I know! It's odd how they are often overlooked, especially considering that they make up a higher proportion of international journeys than rail does domestically.
A new rail line and services - for a once a year music festival? Hmmm. The towns of Glastonbury and Street themselves would not generate enough traffic to justify the investment, I suspect. The Dumfries to Stranraer suggestion was much more sensible, although I think the main usage would not be ferry traffic but freight. Between the late 1800s and 1950, the "Port Road" (Dumfries-Stranraer railway) was exceptionally busy with the freight traffic.
Glastonbury and Street have a combined population of about 20,000. Whilst not massive, there are many far smaller places with rail service - like Leven in Scotland, which has just seen its railway reopened despite having a population of only 8,000. The fact that Glastonbury hosts possibly the most significant music event in the world, as well as it and Street's populations likely having quite high potential rail usage per capita, pushes it from a "nice to have" into something that should be actively pursued. And then there's the possibility of using the route as a faster link to the South West, or the prospect of high, targeted, population growth in the region. To me, it seems like an obvious strategic re-opening.
Vote TUSC against cuts/ Workers Party/ Left wing Indapendent/ tranform/ communist party etc we need to natiomalise the railways under democratic workers and community control. I am standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition TUSC in Reading Central
Before they reopen Stranraer-Dumfries, they really need to build a railway from Dunragit to Cairnryan for a direct connection to the ferry. Rather than closing the line to Stranraer Harbour as you suggest (which would mean a longer walk from the station into the town), I would simply rebuild the station closer to Port Rodie. This option was proposed by SAYLSA (Now the South-West Scotland CRP) back in 2011. Some have suggested reopening the old Stranraer Town station, but it was no closer to the town than the harbour station.
I fully agree with your idea for a ferry from the UK to Scandinavia. steamboatwilley.blogspot.com/2016/09/how-feasible-is-ferry-to-norway.html?m=1
Labour put "change" as their slogan, and yet stop short of committing to real change in their manifesto. They're just playing at it.
Including Scottish/Welsh/N. Irish parties would be kind of a moot point because transport is a devolved matter outside of England, so the Westminster elections wouldn't have that big an effect on transport up here anyway.
exactly northern ireland transport policies more so is about integrating and connecting with Irish transport infrastructure
I wrote to my local MP, Dominic Raab, about local bus service, and he replied saying that wasn't within his remit and to write to the local council. Pah! Definitely not voting tory after that exchange. What a useless bunch of muppets.
No train that flies a connecting door through the landscape, often even offensively painted yellow, can be called "good looking". Marks for aesthetics: 0.
"I agree with that in principle", this must be a Yes, Minister reference.
I've never understood why the right so vehemently opposes HS2. Surely they would want the best national infrastructure in the world?
It's not uniform - many on the right do support HS2. It's just there are a huge number of (to be frank) self-interested radicals who oppose almost all state spending, especially if they do not see direct benefits to their area.
Try traveling with a wheelchair and you find out very quickly how little NS cares about accessibility. They have a legal obligation to provide accesible service, but do the absolute bare minimum, and only if you agree to exist for their convenience.
Never been on one and all I’ve heard is that these trains are apparently shit
Reform are right about scrapping HS2. Massive money waste, need to start from the beginning and actually get a good high speed rail project rather than a train that goes from near london to near birmingham a bit quicker
I daresay what do you want out of a "good high speed rail project"? HS2 does vastly more than go London to Brum quickly - it is and always has been about capacity, and it does a good job with regards to that (it should have gone to Manchester and Leeds for the full benefits, though). As I said, however, this is all irrelevant now. It is under construction, it simply cannot be cancelled now. Over £20 billion has already been spent, and the economic growth required to pay this back cannot be willed into existence.
Regardless of what you think of HS2, GWV is right about it being irreversible. The construction has already completely ripped through huge landscapes going for miles and it's not like there's any way of just putting everything back any more without spending so much more money.
@@GWVillager I get your points and in my ideal world I’d like to see it a full project rather than a half arsed version. A HS2 as far as Scotland with intermediate calling points such as B’ham and Manchester would be a really good addition to our infrastructure. Unfortunately, through years of Tory rule, this has now been downgraded to a slightly faster train between near london and Birmingham. I’d like to see work paused while someone with some common sense comes along and reforms it into a proper project again (and while they are at it, why don’t we take it into London too!)
@@FrecklesAviation The Euston tunnels were on the verge of getting the go ahead just before the election was called, and it should be relatively straightforward for them to start construction under a new Government. Whilst the full thing is undeniably better, London to Birmingham is still a considerable capacity relief - most existing intercity services will move onto it and transport between Britain's two largest cities will be transformed. It's still a worthwhile project, just less overwhelmingly so. But, again, it doesn't matter. It's too late now.
7:35 17:53‼NORWICH MENTIONED‼
I wouldn't vote for any of them, frankly. I'm moving out of the country asap, tbh. * . . . . . *Ok, to be totally fair, my wife lives in Germany and we were planning this well before the election! Haha Have a great day, fella :)
Enjoy Germany! Unfortunately I don't have such a way out (Brexit...) but, seen as I'm staying, I see no point in writing ourselves off.
Half the country cant afford to cook and half the country cant turn the heating on.... and your question is..........mophead!
My transport plan would be: 1) New X shaped high capacity UK rail network centred on Birmingham, replacing most existing intercity routes, including a station at... 2) A hugely expanded East Midlands Airport to create a more central UK hub airport and take pressure off of Heathrow and cancel Heathrow expansion. 3) New overnight sleeper trains running north within the UK and internationally to France, Spain, Switzerland and Italy 😢 4) A hugely expanded ferry network focusing on hubs in large cities where possible with Liverpool to Dublin, Hull to Hamburg, Newcastle to Oslo and Gothenburg and Edinburgh to Copenhagen and Bergen being potential routes. 5) Increase capacity on local/interregional trains by using longer trains and frees up capacity. 6) Expansion of existing tram networks and better integration between trams, buses and local trains. 7) Expand the £2 max bus fare scheme to trams and introduce a similar fare cap for local trains.
I personally would rather donny be transport hub for the UK
@@sglenny001 I mean, being a Mexborough lad so would I really 😂
@EuroDC1990 I think useing Doncaster as a cargo hub for sure making it also be a more modren manufacturing hub almost like Chicago in the states make Sheffield an tech hub with small Scarle industries in it and make the woodhead line our high speed rail
Interesting fact for your North American audience. Canadian forces, warmley welcomed by the long-suffering Dutch, liberated the Netherlands in 1945, entering Amsterdam triumphantly to be met by tulips (a tradition continue by the Dutch government's annual gift of tulips to Canada's capital Ottawa), flags, and a lot pf people celebrating.
There is a DFDS ferry to Gothenburg it is a truck ferry and have used it, would not recommend it for families, with Truck Drivers watching porn at 9.00 am in the lounge. However since Brexit you can nolonger take a private vehicle on it, because the commercial ports they use do not have the facilities for the extra checks required on non commercial traffic post Brexit. Another case of Britain voting to place trade sanctions on itself!
06:02 I would have given the class 700 a 2 on passenger comfort, because if you really hate sitting on an ironing board, theres the option of sitting in the declassified first class at the back of the train. Doesn't get any more than that, because theres obviously no guarantee of a seat.
7:26 The reason why the Class 378's have not been lengthened (or coupled together) is because 5 coaches is about as long as a train can get on the central section of the East London Line before a train will occupy 2 signal sections simultaneously, which would arguably make overcrowding far, far worse. Also the frequency is quite high too, with up to 16tph on that middle section, meaning you're getting 80 coaches per hour (which is more than suburban routes during peak hours like the Bexleyheath line at ~60)
"Delusional" is the perfect word to describe Reform 😂
The next government will surely be Labour, but I think its even more important who comes second place. If the Conservatives are the opposition, they will just spend 5-10 years waiting for Labour to cock up, and slide back into power to continue the cycle. If somehow the Lib Dems are opposition however, i feel they will actually ask meaningful questions about the EU & electoral reform. Acting as a meaningful opposition as opposed to just saying "you guys suuuuuuck" like the conservatives would
Nah, the LDs would toady up to labour, while then screaming "YOU SUCK" when it suits them.
Some of the statements made by reform are just absolute twaddle. Such as ‘Where safety is critical’, &’ Stop war on Drivers’ that I found quite amusing hearing you disprove them. Not to mention the high controversy when it comes to their members as well. Great Video as always.
15:58 Be careful what you wish for! I'm one of the silently seething regarding the dash to the drains standards of political discourse in this country. Ecstatic that I don't live in the USA each time their election cycle gears up again, in that I don't have to be soaked in such impolite and unedifying abuse that their candidates revel in. However, my careful what you wish for comment is because all the parties are as you say so scared to say anything that might upset middle england voter that we're not being treated like adults. Everything potentially difficult and nasty is being saved for the days after the election. Picture the scene: Oh we're very upset to find that there's no money in the coffers so we have no option but to increase this and tax that.
Is this video just about cars being bad, I understand people have varying opinions but it seemed a little bit over the top, still enjoyed the rest of the video though
I wish it wasn't - but so many parties appear to have jumped on the "war on drivers" bandwagon, and it must be addressed.
I'm as up for rail as much as possible but "car usage is too high" is something someone who only have a provisional license would say.
I have no license whatsoever. But that is a near-objective statement: we need to shift more journeys out of cars and onto other modes, obviously not for every journey and obviously not everywhere, but a strategy is needed.
I have a full licence and I absolutely would say that. In fact, I would shout it.
You missed Workers Party UK which is a big oversight.
They are an incredibly small party with virtually no national influence - it’s effectively a local pressure group.
Bringing the idea back of you working in rail policy and reform!!!
I take issue with your point that "local authority bus companies would be too small". When you look at municipals like Lothian, Reading, Cardiff and Nottingham, they are sizeable operators. Sure, particularly in metro areas or where you have an adjacent city and county authority, there may be a case for having a combined operator because there will be a high volume of cross-border traffic, but the more you do that the further you take the power away from the local community. We all know how well that can work when you have someone at Arriva HQ in Sunderland (or any of the other big groups) making decisions about provision in other distant parts of the country.
Absolutely, large cities should have their own companies, and there are exceptions to every rule. But most local authorities are not large cities, and a broader strategy is needed. Anyway, I am making a video on this, which should clear things up a bit!
The thing that upsets us in Wales about HS2, is that it has been categorised as an England and Wales project. It goes nowhere near Wales and reduces the amount of money available to spend on railways that are actually in Wales. Cancellation of the rest of HS2 has allowed some extra funding to come through, but nowhere near as much as should have been allocated had HS2 been England only.
It’s absolutely absurd. HS2 should indeed have been England only from the start.
HS2 if fully built would've massively reduced congestion around Crewe and Chester, allowing trains into and out of north Wales from destinations around the UK to be far more reliable and faster
@@KingFinnchyes but North Wales isn’t as important economically, educationally, culturally and politically when compared to South Wales. Old Oak Common wont do much in the way of reducing journey times to Newport, Cardiff, Port Talbot or Swansea.
Had HS2 been built as intended not only as pointed out already would it have enabled an increase in cross country services in North Wales that need to interface with the WCML around Crewe and Chester but also mid Wales and the border regions that interface with the WCML around Birmingham. Of course it does not help South Wales but whatever you are not going to improve cross country services in the South without work in England.
