Dave and Sonya in Michigan
США
Добавлен 21 май 2020
These videos are for anyone with an interest in Homesteading, Self-Sufficiency, Food Preservation, Back Country Camping or being in Nature. This is the place for you.
On our 5 Acre Homestead located in Michigan, we have chickens and ducks both for meat and eggs. We are also big into organic gardening and practice many food preservation skills like Freeze Drying, Canning and Dehydrating.
One of our passions is Wilderness or Dispersed Camping (no public services). As we age, we have found that Rustic tent camping isn't as easy on us and we enjoy modern conveniences. We realized that we needed something that served us in both the camping world and on the homestead in the event we lost power, so we outfitted our Truck and Cargo Trailer with Solar and converted the Cargo Trailer into a mobile Off-Grid Tiny House. This has served us well, especially with Michigan's Crazy weather.
We will look forward to sharing our knowledge and experiences with you.

The Ultimate Solution: Amazing Travel 12 Volt Lunch Box Heater
You neglected to mention what type of battery (and its capacity) you are using connected to your Giandel. The battery could very well be the weak link in the equation. Your 12V battery (if 100 Ah ~1300 watts) might not be supplying enough current to the inverter to power up the saw. The solar generator / power station has its own internal battery (I assume 48v) designed to supply the necessary current for 1500w. So I'm not convinced it is the inverter's fault. Hook up more powerful or multiple 12V 100 Ah batteries in parallel and supply enough current to the inverter, and then see if it still will not power the saw.
Always a handy tip
What Freeze dryer do you use?

Forgot to add thank you for the salad dressing recipes, trying to make soon.
@@mikek50100 thank you!
Don't know if you are still monitoring comments on this video, but great info, TY! Made two qt. batches, one fermented for 11 days, the other 10 days, and now have three more going. Don't know if I missed it in the video, how long do you ferment for? I use a commercial starter culture so maybe it ferments quicker!?
@@mikek50100 it will go slower in the winter because it's colder out and faster in the summer. I start tasting about after a week.
Because you used a commercial starter and you may have a jump start, you might want to follow their directions.
Nicely done! Double purpose- power and shade. Lol, this is the only time shade is a good thing with solar panels. Now, if you could only do a pulley system to (adjustable), angle the panels. Man, I just installed the adjustable brackets, and they made a lot of difference harnessing the free sun power. However, it's sort of pain in the arse to climb up the roof, set the angle desired, then reverse process b4 heading home. It's probably almost 30 minutes for the first process. So almost an hour total. 😂
@gotTeslaModelY nice! I originally was going to tip my panels with gas shocks so I could do them from the ground. But I decided to do the slideout, so I could get more panels. I think I got more power this way. I love the shade I get with my panels (lol).
I saw another DIY and the guy used gas struts. It saved him some time deploying the 8-10 panels. Mine is only 2 with 8 knobs to screw and unscrew. Eventually, I might add the struts. If only I could incorporate a pulley system with it so I dont have to climb the roof each time. I also a manufacturer from San Diego CA that sells the automated one, but it's $600 per panel. Ouch! Made to order only. MAYBE Santa could drop off 1 or 2 next to the Xmas tree😂. Happy Holidays!
@@gotTeslaModelY ouch, $600 per panel. I have 22 panels. I liked the tip up for the efficiency. But I chose the slide out for the simplicity. Although it was still pretty difficult and expensive! Once I got the idea in my head, it really wasn't that difficult.
Watching this made my head hurt 😂

I am on a well, so if power goes out, no water. But I do have solar generators, fire pit and other ways to make a fire. (p.s. you might want to be conscious of how often you say, "you know'). : )
Yes, we are on a well also. We will be doing a video down the road on what we do if we are out of power and need to get water and how we would heat it. Thanks for the p.s.
I would really like to find the watt usage per hour for the 6.5 qt on the warm setting. I have yet to find a video that measures wattage per setting, which everyone uses if they use these devices
Maybe one day I will measure this. In one of the comments, another person measured the wattage at different settings for a 7 quart unit. I also have a link in the description for the wattage meter I use to measure wattage of different devices. It currently is priced at $29.
I love the idea of having hot water at the ready! I have a pump thermos that would work perfect.
We have a few different thermos type containers. In the camper we use a coffee air pot (I think that's what you call it) You can fill it with hot water and then push the thing on the top and it pushes water out. It works great for coffee but better for hot water for us.
My problem is it works for 2 months then it gets hot and it melts stops working
@reymorales6936 this is probably fixable! Generally heat is a poor connection or higher current / small wires. If it's a loose connection, that's where all the heat will be generated. If it's high current or small wires, you generally can feel heat along the entire wire. If it is high current or small wire the result will still be melted at a connection. What is the cigarette lighter plug powering?
@daveandsonyainmichigan i have a electric cooler in my car 12v in my Tractor when I travel to Chicago it should be 12. After to months of use gets hot melts and I end up buying new plug and connecting wires sometimes I soder and sometimes not same results
My guess would be that the solder job is not a very good solder. That may be why soldering and not soldering get the same results. Try a Philmore 48-521 connector. No soldering required!
Very Cool! I'm making a couple for the horse feed bins. I hope they turn out as good as yours. ❤
I hope yours turn out just as good too! Let me know how it goes!
Mine says overload and I just plug my cellphone, can you help me? What should I do? Thanks!
What model is your unit? Is it charged? When you unplug the cell phone, does the fault go away? Is this a charger that plugs into the 110 VAC or a cord that plugs into the DC? Can you try another charger or cord?
Hello does this apply to meat as well.
Hi, yes the reconstitute is always figured the same way. With that being said, some items can take more water. Some meats like cube steak, you can put a little more water and it will take what it needs, you can drain the rest. I don't really measure water weight for meat anymore because I know what Im looking for. For dishes that have meat in it, say like spaghetti, I would measure because it is hard to pull off extra water in saucy stuff. I hope that helps you.

No we don't cook them for the birds. We want it a closer to what they would find if they were scratching outside.
@@daveandsonyainmichigan ok, thank you
You are welcome. You could cook them if you wanted it would just be a different source of nutrition. We sprout them to get them the fresh stuff they can't get in the wintertime.
Can you make a comparison when it's on eco mode and not? Plz and thx
David is tied up with a job. I'll have him get back to you ASAP
I was not aware that this TV may have an ECO mode. I did read that the ECO mode reduces the brightness and a few other features affecting the quality of the image. I probably would not use ECO mode for this reason. But I may do a comparison sometime in the future if this TV has that option.
@daveandsonyainmichigan I get it thanks. In the meantime ill wait out my electricity bill n see how it plays out without the eco mode and so on. Thanks for you time.

Did you ever just water bath it instead of in a pressure canning? I finally found a great deal for chicken breast here in Belgium EU but can't buy a pressure canner in the next 2 days. Maybe just in 4 days.
I always pressure can low acid foods. You can freeze the chicken, then pressure can it later. I do a freezer clean out a couple times a year and will can up extra meat. You would want to thaw over night on fridge and then you could pack jars.
@@daveandsonyainmichigan Yes that sounds like the best idea, thank you very much! 👍 Greetings from the EU were everyone acts like all is fine 🙄
I just bought a 280AH LIthium Iron with low temp sensor and been looking at how to heat em up. I'm not really seeking extreme cold temps but I may one day be in Colorado or high elevation so been interested in these heating pads. For now I"m in California and leaving towards Arizona Quartzite in December till February.
Have fun on your trip! Install the pads under your battery and wire with connectors you can unplug when not needed. Just remember to plug them in when you do need them!
What happens if you accidentally reverse the wires and plug it into your cigarette lighter in your car? Will it only blow the fuse in your car?
It could blow the fuse, it could burn up your device. It could make a motor in your device run backwards. It may just not work. And it may just work fine! A heating device would not care which way it was wired, it would still heat. An LED light in the heating device may not light. A water pump or air pump probably would still run (backwards) but would pump. Electronic devices depend on how well they were designed. They could burn up, not work until you correct the polarity or work just fine with either polairty!
What is the best way to protect from wifi emf personally? Should we put the foil or mylar over the computer modem if we can't unplug it? I just want a healthier living environment for me and my cat. Thank you.
@brightwithspirit emf vs emp. These are different! An emp "electromagnetic pulse" can come from a nuclear explosion in our atomsphere or emp weapon (if one exists). A completely sealed metal type container may protect against an emp. Generally, these devices are stored as backups and not powered on at the time of protection. An emf "electromagnetic frequency" is a frequency emitted from devices that are running, like your modem, cell phone, and ear buds. Even your household wiring! If you put your modem inside one of these metal protective containers and were able to seal it closed around the wires, then it would not work as a modem! I think the best way to protect yourself is to stay as far away from these devices as possible or turn them off when not in use. The easiest way would be to turn everything off at night while you are sleeping. I have even heard that you should turn off the power to your outlets in your bedroom. Anything that broadcast a signal is emitting emf (cell towers, radio stations, TV stations) to eliminate all emf would mean you yourself would need to be in a Faraday cage! Hope this helps a little!
We have a friend we dumps out all her jars over 1 year. It drives me crazy.
Oh my gosh, really? What a waste.

You are welcome!
Thanks for the video! So is it literally like... $1 of electricity per day? Then if you only use it a few times per year, just run it during those days only? As opposed to buying bags of ice for those days? Hmmm 🤔 I guess if one has easy access to ice and doesn't use ice often then it's not really all that useful. Conversely if one uses ice a LOT or does not have easy access to ice nearby, then it makes sense.
Many options! One time, we were boonedocking on state land, in the woods, along side a river. We stayed there for more than a week and had only seen one person! We did not have electricity to plug into. We never left from our spot. We used the solar on our trailer for cooking, air conditioning, laundry and all other typical conveniences including making ice!
What is the brand and item number of the refrigerator
@@ReitzelMurphy I purchased this fridge in July of 2021 from Menards. It is Premium Levella brand PRF736HS. It is an energy star unit with manual defrost. This unit is probably not available anymore. But you should be able to find other enegry efficient.
I have tried to change the default time for freezing and it won’t let me. I have a very old model. My understanding is that if you have pre-frozen your food for 48 hours you should be good. Didn’t know that different models freeze at different temps. Thanks.
I was saying your regular kitchen fridge/freezer freezes to just below zero degrees and the freeze dryer freezes to about 40 or 50 below zero. You need to make sure the food gets to this low temp. 15 minutes may won't do it. There is a way to change the default that is temporary and it will go back to the original setting on the next cycle. And then there is a way to change the default permanently! My other video shows this.
@@daveandsonyainmichiganok thanks. I will look for that video.
First short video: ruclips.net/video/6GuWocAOJ7g/видео.html
Second short video: ruclips.net/video/mS2rmWIxF2g/видео.html
Thank you !!! I have been trying to figure out how to skip the freezing part since my food is already frozen on my trays. I assume I would have to have the freeze cycle run for 15 minutes or so to bring the temperature down before putting in my frozen food, correct??
The freeze dryer freeze temp is much colder than your home freezer. I believe you could shave off a few hours if the food is pre frozen. The newer unit do this already. It ask you if the food is pre frozen. You could get 5 or 6 hours into the cycle and then skip the last 2 or 3 hours. You can also change the default freeze time if you always pre freeze your foods. I show this in another video. I think the best way is if you remember, when there is 2 or 3 hours left, just skip the remaining time. That way, if you forget, nothing is ruined!
Good video. I live east of Muskegon about 20- 30 miles.
Thank you. We are the middle of the thumb.
