Is the Aputure 300d II worth it in 2023?
I've watched so many videos regarding lights for a beginner RUclipsr, and this by far was the most helpful. Thank you!
Great video, as always! Do you recommend the 1200X aputure as a good first light? Im Starting to get into film making. Or is color really needed when deciding which light to get first. like the 1000c
How is the locking mechanism on the yoke? On the 1200D, we had to attach a magicarm every time we wanted to use the fresnel (so basically 99% of the time) and raise it up on a stand. Otherwise, the lamp would just aim straight down at the slightest adjustment. Kinda wished they went with the Spotlight Max / P600c route with 2 locking levers
I'll just add that I'm so happy the color rendition of LEDs have come this far. Much like the race for more megapixels in the early 2000-2010s, there will always be a race for the next big thing but we've reached a point where prosumer lights are good enough for any productions. At least when it comes to quality of light.
I'm finding the lock to be pretty beefy feeling, but I've only put the 45° reflector on it. Hopefully the CF12 fresnel also weighs less than the F10 to further reduce that issue.
Very cool that you did not hesitate to jump into the physics of light emission. An exceptionally thorough light fixture review. Thanks!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed all the science!!
Super useful information. You made the new color science sound so good, that now I hesitate to buy their Infinibar lights with the older tech. The 20% off Black Friday sale has me tempted.
The new tech is super cool but I do also love my infinibars. They're so useful! I'm hoping to squeeze some more life out of them before the inevitable BLAIR-CG version comes out sometime in the future.
How does this compare to the new Arri Skypanel?
I don't have one, nor have I looked at it yet. Hopefully someone else can chime in!
Fantastic stuff. Really appreciate how you take the time to explain the technical considerations necessary for understanding what makes this light "special". You're not just educating about the product, but also educating people like me who want to take lighting more seriously.
Ahhhhh, I'm so happy to hear that! Glad you're enjoying the deeper look into why this tech is so cool! Thank you!
For power, can this be used with both a generator and standard house outlet like the 1200 and 600 series? Sorry if this was answered already in the video, I had to cut out early because of class, lol. Great video by the way!
Yes! I didn't mention it but this can be run off any generator that's suitable for filmmaking, provided the genny has enough amperage!
@@thegranitegaffer oh cool! And US household outlets? Can it be used there as well? Thank you so much for the reply!
Wow I loved this. Incredible, just followed. Appreciate you sharing all of the physics behind it.
Thanks for following and glad you found all the physics detail helpful!
Great video, I learnt a lot kee up the great work.
Thank you! Glad to hear you took some new things away from it!
Just under an hour for a light review??? Are you nuts? Next time a want to see a whole season with 15 parts minimum 😂
My goal is to have a lord of the rings trilogy length series someday and give the people what they really want lol
whats the industry like in colorado?
It's pretty small compared to other film-centric markers.
I must admit when I saw the thumbnail I was like “this light was released today there’s no way this is an ‘in depth review’ so soon” and WOW was I wrong. This is fantastic work dude. Thank you so much for making this and putting in all the time. This light being brighter than the 1200D is crazy work from Aputure. Buying Prolycht was truly one of the most strategic and fruitful acquisitions of another company I have seen. I hope they keep it up. Would love to see a video where you go over your van package!
Thank YOU for leaving such a nice comment! Glad that you found all the information helpful!! I'll put together a van build video soon!
As someone learning about this kind of stuff, I really appreciate the work you’ve put into this video, very informative….. thank you!
Happy to help! Glad you found it informative!!
That light is a goddamn dream.
Yeah man, it's crazy to think how far led tech has come in the last few years!

I'm really hoping that they do that one!
Funny, I’d completely forgotten we did that at Prolycht on the Orions.
You’re gunning for Gaffer & Gear’s lighting numbers crown, aren’t you! Thank you very, very much for this! More education than review and I mean that in the best way possible! Cheers from a DP Down Under
I would never, Andrew is a great guy and reviewer! He definitely deserves that title. Just trying to add my own spin on things! Glad you enjoyed all the detail!
@ all good mate! I’ve subscribed and look forward to more of your excellent content!
When a product review ends up actually being an advanced diploma in Physics. Loved it!
Glad to hear you found all the detail useful!! Thank you!!
Ok, checked the price ... impressive $3990. Looks like GMV might scrap their 1200C light (as they've done with their 1200B after aputure released 1200X :D).
Going to check the price :D
I do not need to watch any other review of this light. It's perfect (maybe apart of too loud background music :D). It's the best light review ever. I do not understand how you have only 3k subs :(
Thank you!!
I like how you can now call this " a 1k" now. lol Like... Get me the Aputure 1k, and set it to tungsten
Lol I didn't even think of that but I'm definitely going to do that!
Every time I watch one of your videos it literally makes me a better gaffer Nobody else does light reviews like this This is what us working pros need
Thank you!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is a great and thorough review Tyler. Definitely picking up one of these down the road.

A feature-length review on an LED chipset, who would've thought 😂
How long did it take you to do all your testing? Very impressive!
agreed
you're videos are great. Always know you're the first to get something out new Aputure
It was two days of testing and another formatting all the data! I had about a week with the light before launch.
great info! Love your videos. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Glad you are finding them useful!
You mate should have 1m subs, keep it up!
We can only dream! Thank you!!
Love the review! YOu have any idea to make more potable? I men, someway put the 1/4 screw treand at the side, like dismountig the rail with spigot an attatch there. Or anyway tho charge with usbc or Vmount. The dc charge it's a big downside
This deserves way way way more views and likes! Great video and the most helpful lighting tutorials I’ve found!
Thank you!! Happy to hear you found it helpful 🙏🙏🙏 hopefully more to come!
Great! What you advise for solo filmmaker? MT pro or infinibar pt3?
I'd love to purchase this kit....but. I'll be flying with it a lot and cannot fine the total weight of the kit anywhere in any of the tech specs. Did you manage to catch the weight at all?
It was like 60 or 70 lbs when I weighed it on my scale if I remember correctly
I am so impressed how much info you crammed into 16 minutes, a gold mine for a beginner. I am a working professional and while I didn't learn anything new per se, it definitely got me thinking how I can improve my work.
Thank you!!
This is a great review and answer the right questions. I completely enjoyed it.
Dude, you are the man! Love your reviews. Thx for the breakdown. 👍
Thank you!! Glad you are enjoying the reviews!
Do you have any suggestions for reducing forehead shine? Some suggest oil blotting sheets or makeup... but do you have any LIGHTING suggestions? (Personally, I'm making talking head videos at home with a 110cm softbox key and fill light, both about 30 degrees on each side of camera.)
Wow! This video was amazing. Thank you. I really like your style too. I love the idea of taping magnets to a surface to attach little colored accent lights. But I didn't understand your on-screen tip about using magnets + a mini ball head. Where do the magnets go in that case?
So helpful bro 🙏
Thank you! What brand of C-Stands are you using? I love that they're black.
Matthews 40" c-stand. They're available on b&h!
thanks
This is so key! (Pun intended) understanding light falloff is a game changer. 🔥
Did you happen to test the brightness between the 600cii and the 600d with the provided reflector, and not the Fresnel? I remember Aputure saying they made the COB wider on the original 600c so it did not perform well with the F10 as it wasn't optimized for it. Is that the same case on the V2? Based off their product sheet the max intensity should be closer than 2/3 stop using the reflector.
I didn't. I tend to only use the 600's with the F10 fresnel. I'll make sure to include that kind of testing moving forward!
Could you say whether there's a hot spot on this light on the new 600c ii with its hyper reflector? One of the great things about the previous 600c was the fact it didn't have the hot spot with the hyper reflector that the other ls600 lights were notorious for, is it the same here with the new dish?
I didn't notice an obvious hot spot when I quickly tested the reflector, but in full transparency I basically just throw that away and only ever use the fresnel with the 600's so I'm not the best person to ask.
Great video
Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏
"No plan survives first contact with the enemy." good line.
Glad you liked that one! And thanks for watching!! 🙏🙏🙏
These do seem like great lights, and the built in magnets are nice. As a buyer, though, I'd be worried about Aputure releasing a new version with their newer color mixing tech and rendering these obsolete. Honestly, at the price they're at it isn't too much more to just buy titans and get the rental value and IP rating that comes with those. Godox also has some IP rated tubes that are brighter but are also substantially cheaper than titans. So these are kind of in a middle ground imo.
That new color chipset is a valid concern, imo. It'll be interesting to see what their release schedule looks like after the pushback they received upon release of the 600c II from owners of the original. As an owner/operator at my level, I'll take the bars over the titans any day. They're easier to rig, easier to use, look better in frame, and are currently more requested than titans. I can't comment about the Godox products, I unfortunately haven't gotten my hands on any of their professional level equipment. I also haven't really ever wished I had more output from the bars I've got though, being color accurate is more important to me.
Prices have had a significant drop for the PB12 in the last couple of weeks, so you could well be right about the release of a new version.
@@thegranitegaffer the 600c ii release I can really see how people were upset. Aputure should’ve just delayed the 600c until they had a design that optically lined up with the fresnel. With the advent of their new tech theres no way Im buying any aperture product any time soon knowing it’ll all be devalued very soon in resale and rental value. That said the 1200x looks very very compelling, and I am considering it over the nanlux units if I decide to but a couple more 1200 LEDs. Oh, I see. Must be a market difference. Im in a small market, but titans are asked for often. You can sell most people on other options, but people definitely prefer titans, for good reason in my opinion.
Would love to see these compared to the pt4c
That's a great suggestion! I probably won't have the time to get to that comparison, unfortunately. But I do love the usb-c charging of the amaran tubes, and I've heard the battery can last a little longer too. I really love that rail system on the infinibars though. And if you don't need CRMX, and intend to light your set via Bluetooth with sidus link, and don't put tubes in frame very often as practicals, then you'll probably be just as happy with the amaran tubes as an infinibar for less price.
Great review again. Love it
Thanks for watching!! 🙏🙏🙏
