I think AI chose those sort of rules because it is being fed off the internet and the internet is full of whiny wangrods. Perhaps if you had a chat with any AI model and deacribe your goals for your game and your style it could come up with more suitable examples. Also, homebrew rules or house rules are generally applied to mitigate or change a circumstance of the general rules that doesn't jive specifically with your playgroup or campaign so asking AI to give you "house rules" not describing what your game is like probably is why they came out so janky. Maybe an idea for a future video? Tell chatgpt some things about your campaign and see what it comes up with? Most of the time, when I play barbarian, I end up playing the role of a tank.

The first D&D map I ever Did was just the United States at the end of the ice age, most of the plains states were an inland sea, California's central valley was flooded. Montana thru Illinois back up to New York were called the Ice reaches, and were frozen most of the year. It was inhabited by barbaric Elves; Dwarves were mining in the Appalachians. The humans had settlements sprinkled along the inner coast. There were roaming tribes of Centaur. Eventually I ended up just doing the rest of the continents to fill in the rest of the world. I had sea hawks, used giant eagle stats, in the Northwest that lived on an atoll and would raid the shipping lanes. It was years before anyone got that joke. (Sea atoll, sea hawks) 0

It sounds to me like Chat GPT isn't capable of coming up with mechanical rules. Those rules all seemed to be logistical. Rules for the players to follow rather than rules for how things function in game. I usually like mechanical homebrew rules, and would love to hear how crazy A.I. could get with some of those.

The Storm Herald Barbarian sees a random rock in druids grove and is like "a rock!! A ROCK!!! this makes me so ANGRY!!!!" he is just walking around the forest absolutely fuming.

Over on CollegeCrusaders we really love playing D&D, but there’s another great RPG called basic fantasy. It gives you that great old School feel along with having a few of the modern rules that make the game easy. Another great thing is it’s completely free on their website.

You shouldn't feel ashamed of using AI as long as you're checking the output carefully and making human corrections as needed. In the case of RPGs I would use it for problems that wouldn't be exposed to the players. For example, you could use it to create rough drafts for characters or have it talk you through parts of the planning process. Anything that's player facing I wouldn't advise using AI without a capable human in the loop especially if you're taking money for a product. An exception to this might be if the AI assets are peppered throughout the RPG and take a backseat to other, more polished aspects of your game. When all is said and done, you're responsible for the game and if you can create it using AI as a tool and your players enjoy it, you made a good game. Same vice versa.

Respectfully, you're asking the wrong question. AI, at least until it achieves Singularity and dooms humanity, is really just a tool. You're asking what people's thoughts are on a tool, but the tool is used for a purpose. First, ask the purpose. WHAT kind of experience are you trying to create here? THAT should be your question. I've played campaigns from DM's that went the full-custom prop route, I've also played with ones that had NOTHING beyond character sheets and dice. I've had fun on all ends of that spectrum and it was primarily because I was with my friends. But we weren't making a "product." We weren't streaming it, we weren't showcasing it, it was just a group of friends reacting to comedic rolls one way or the other. So again, it really boils down to WHAT you are trying to create. THEN you can figure out the tools you'll use to make it happen. First the what, then the how.

It's your game, use it if you like. Ignore everyone calling you lazy. Us DMs put literally hundreds of hours into our campaigns. We have already spent a ton of money too. As a DM, go for it. The rest of these people are either ignorant or they are artists who want jobs. It's not your job to give them a job. Take the easy wins when you can get them. I do. I've put more than a thousand hours into campaigns over these last almost 3 decades of being a DM.

You can just charge ten dollars for black and white head sketches. They'll have way more personality, especially if you give descriptions of the characters to the artist.

There are websites and apps that let you create characters with sims style interfaces, you don't need to use ai for that, and there are loads of free landscapes online

When i DM no subject is taboo in my table unless someone explicitly says they're uncomfortable or there are underage players. Sexuality, gender identity, gender roles, reversing gender roles... All good to explore at the volition of the players. On the subject of sexual assault i am more carefull. NEVER go into detail narrating it and NEVER do it to a player character. It is something horrible that happens "off-screen" to some NPCs for the sole purpose of showing how evil a character is. To this day, only one person told me they were uncomfortable with a scene. I was going into too much detail with the gore. They asked me to tone it down, i did and we continued with no more issues.

DMs don't warn they ONLY describe what the senses can perceive. Let the players fuck around and find out. The player lives while the character dies. This is the best gift you can give the player. They get to live and learn where they would normally have died in real life.

So... there used to be this stuff called underlayment; it was a specific kind of underlayment but I don't remember what it was for* (sorry about that). It had a nice side and a crap side and it was only 1/4" thick. IF they still make the stuff (and they may not... I'm an old lady and haven't been to a hardware store in years...), you can cut the front side and back side differently without having to use a router, then glue the sides together (crap sides together, of course) and stain however. It IS a ply-wood material, but I think it will be cheaper and lighter than your red oak. Just my two cents. * Maybe for laying floor tile...? It was back in the 80s and I've blocked most of that out, lol!
