In this one I recruit the in-laws to help set the trusses and then carry on alone to brace and frame the roof. Overall it was one of the toughest and most time consuming aspects of the build. Working with an 18' tall, steep pitch roof made any task a lot harder to accomplish efficiently.

Every third course should have a bond beam,ie top ends should be cut out
If you just dig a simple cross trench where your out riggers can set down in the trench and angle your digger down a bit.. you can get a few more feet deeper. If youre worried about falling down in the hole, just leave it hitched on your truck as youre using it down in the hole.. there are always methods for going deeper... you just have to solve the puzzle

Must be no caliche Not safe to be in trench without protection I just bought an old backhoe but its a lot of work fixing it up.

thank you all the other heating solutions was about 150.00 for the heating pad only
No problem! I recently made another battery but didn’t want to rely on ac power for heating, so used a 48V - 12V buck converter to run a 12V thermostat and heating pads. Was about $50 and allows the batteries to maintain a set temperature even with the inverter switched off. It’s a better system than the one I did in this video in my opinion!

Curious if you plan to air seal the tyvek in some way? Not sure it is common/recommended but maybe it could improve air tightness?
Air sealing is highly recommended.
Thanks for the comment! I’ll tape the seams but it’ll be difficult to externally seal the transition to OSB/soffit under the eaves. I’ve foam sealed all the gaps in the OSB/blocking on the inside as my best attempt at air sealing that area. Then I’ll caulk the soffit (I’m doing a conditioned/unvented attic) and hope for the best

Thanks mate! It’s actually been quite calm, with the exception of the days I did the wrap and the morning after the roof underlayment (of course). Been cold as shit though, in the negatives most mornings!

Hello, I really enjoyed the shed and solar build. I have never seen the use of joist hangers when the joists are resting on the sill plate. What is the purpose of that? You are supposed to nail the joist to the plate to hold the building down which makes the hangers unnecessary then through the rim board into the end of the joist. Also if you used hangers to "hang" the joist on a beam or something you would need a filler piece on the ends of the joists where the hangers are but these aren't hanging. Thanks.
Interesting. I had an infiltrator system installed at parent's house 6 yrs ago in Mass. It had gravity flow to distribution box then gravity flow to 4 rows of infiltrators. But there were no perforated/drilled pvc pipes inside the infiltrators. I thought one of the advantages of infiltrator system over traditional perforated pipe/gravel field is that there are no perforated pipes so there is no chance the pipe holes might get plugged up and the leach field fail. I assume you needed the drilled pipes because the flow/pressure from the pump would disturb/move the sand at the inflow side of first arch of each row and prevent even distribution of effluent in each row. Is this correct?
I believe so. It’s a high head pump (required by engineering) pushing effluent at around 2 feet of head, so I think the pressure and flow would erode the sand too heavily if not for the perforations to distribute the water evenly. The perforations also point up so it sprays into the underside of the infiltrator and then drips onto the sand from there. Still a possibility of clogging but with the cleanouts on all 4 pipes hopefully it would be easy to resolve!
If you had used a double Block and tackle set up you could have hoisted the sheets up with far less effort. I say this as I had a kayak shed with a double block setup. I could lift my kayaks and tie them to the poles of my shed . I could lift them with 1 finger. Easy work. Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed watching your progress.

I got lucky with the OSB timing, it was cheaper than pre pandemic prices! Having said that, I waited one day after the quote to buy the lumber package and the rim boards when up by $50 each (for a 12’ board) so the market is still wildly volatile

You need to take a look at your manual. There are two settings on the backhoe. One for shallow ditch and one for deep ditch. It requires moving a pin. It's easier to dig on the shallow setting but if you move it you can dig deeper
I assembled it on the deep pin setting and it’s been that way since. It’s pretty clearly marked on the machine in massive writing so the manual isn’t really needed for that! Good to know that it’s easier to dig on the shallow setting, I’ve never used it. Thanks!
Shallow setting gives more bucket lift height allowing for loading low wall height dump trailers

OK give me one reason why you didn't line up the apex of your shed with the sun and put the panels on that. Being steep the shed roof would optimise the solar gain in the winter -when you need every bit of power that you can get. Add some panels there and use some of the power to heat the batteries in the winter.
The ridge of the A frame does in fact run E-W, and that’s no accident! I have another 7KW of panels to mount, and at least 12 panels will likely end up on the A frame. The two ground arrays I built were a better initial choice for mounting in my situation, as I wanted covered storage for my trailer and trencher, and then also a separate enclosed area for smaller equipment that was still too big for the A frame (which is on a raised foundation). My battery heating system only draws around 14W anyway, and as it turns out is completely unnecessary when the batteries are in use, which is all the time now with the house. I’ll be sure to make a mounting video for those A frame panels, and I’ll be looking to do that with few to no roof penetrations as that is the main reason I don’t like roof-mounted panels. Stay tuned!

Horizontal blocking at panel edges, or is that at a later date?
Later date, this week in fact. One of the last things to do before it gets wrapped!
I llke your wooden structure for the panels. Very simple design (which is in my book a good thing), solid materials, looking good. However, not sure what will happen under a big wind load. Your posts in the ground will have to take all the horizontal forces. But there is an easy fix, add some solid straps (dimension of your rafters) from the top of your shorter posts in the back to the bottom of your posts in front. Suddenly you will get two triangles instead of that weird four corner design. That's why roof-trusses are always made up of triangles. For aesthetics and strength you could double those added straps.
You’re definitely right! The one I built in this video actually got enclosed (not on video) so the sheathing took that bending moment and turned it to a shear into the base of the post. The other one has tension wires between opposite corners top to bottom for the reasons you brought up. Having said that, it withstood a 95mph wind storm before I added the wires!

I imagine the gains would be considerable, especially for the array adjacent to the a frame as a lot of light bounces off that steel roof!
Keep in mind he could buy 5-10 of these panels for one of those at the current pricing.
Where is your crawl space access? What about your underground/underfloor plumbing?
@scottstalcar3223 Crawlspace access is through a hatch in the subfloor. I talk about it at 2:50 and you can see me cut it in at 3:58. 4” septic line is already there with a cap and comes in from under the footing. Freshwater has a sleeve also from under the footing so pex line can slide in from 5’ down and come up into the crawlspace. I talk about that stuff in the footings video. Additional pipes for plumbing can be brought in through a 6” vent hole in the rim board, but I did not mention that. Thanks for your interest!

Looks like you only have particle board as outer perimiter? Will that be strong enough to set up the exterior walls and take all the load? Thinking of the ends running along the floor joists
Hi there! So that board is an engineered wood product specifically designed for the application as a rim board. It’s about 3x thicker than the OSB sheathing and unfortunately considerably more expensive!
