Today I read a paper by Otte. It was my first ever contact with the Ecological approaches. Now I get this recommended... okay google. I gotta say, the ecology model does align with my own perconceptions very well. Just recently I thought to myself: "I should not teach my athletes, they should teach themselves. So, I need to put them into the environment that forces them to learn what they need." Still, the old information-perception model does seem very applicable... but maybe it's just not it.

This explains why I've found using thin bag gloves on the heavy bag so helpful to my punching technique. It achieves everything CLA training aims for: De-stabilise There are no hand-wraps or wrist support from the gloves to maintain perfect hand alignment with the forearm. Exploration and self-organisation The solution to an optimal punch is not provided, but the opportunity to find that solution through movement variation is. Amplify information and invite affordances There is minimal or no knuckle padding, this drastically improves your ability to feel where and how your punch is landing, and how aligned your force, forearm, etc is to the target for optimal force transfer. If you attempt to punch without stabilising your arm and hand with the correct ligament and muscle activation, correct movement, correct angle, and correct point of contact you will be punished with pain. Provide transition feedback The bag moves/deflects more and louder "pops" of a punch hitting the bag are heard as force transfer improves. Your hands and shoulders noticeably stablise and feel more "solid" giving positive feedback you are more optimally transfering explosive force into the bag. Key takeaways from this exercise: - Punching feedback is greatly improved. If you punch wrong you know immediately (pain). If you punch correctly you know immediately (bag movement, sound, or body feel). - Ligament stability for your hands and shoulders greatly improves and subsequently so dose punching power to a lesser extent. - I feel as though the likelihood of hand, wrist and shoulder injury lowers thanks to: 1. Better recruitment of ligaments in those areas 2. Strengthening of those ligaments 3. Improved positioning and landing of the hand when it hits its' target. Note: - This exercise should not be used to learn the basics of how to punch. It should be used to help refine your punching technique. Think of it as the final stage of sharpening a knife; deburring the tiny lip of metal on a knife before it becomes razor sharp and highly durable. - Beginner boxers should not try this constraint exercise as injury is very likely without the foundations of how to correctly punch. Thanks Rob :)

Maybe I am getting too caught up in semantics but I wouldn’t say that the relationship between constraints and outcomes is unpredictable but rather it is a non-linear which can lead to results seeming unpredictable. But I do think there is some real causal relationship for the interacting but just like in all research studies there are confounding factors that may lead to a constraint’s interaction being nullified or minimized. The IMO CLA acknowledges or takes into account confounding factors and we must accept that we probably won’t be able to grasp the totality of the complex things we seeking engage with aka sports and the coaching of said sports.

Some explanations and examples of how to develop task constraints into different sports would be helpful. A big question I have is with respect to skating in hockey. A large majority of coaching for skating involves decoupling the skating techniques (again using an idealized technque) from the game. For e.g. many skating instructors remove pucks from the equation (which I think is okay in many respects as players skate without the puck about 95%of the time in game play), and they break down stride, edgework, turns, lateral work, pivots, evasive manoevers and crossovers for e.g., into drills separate from the game. I love the idea of CLA as I don't tend to see how decoupling these enables transfer for the player, in terms of being able to apply these separate techniques/skills into games. I have been ruminating for months regarding how to teach these using CLA but I can't for the life of me figure out how. Also, aren't there more ideal ways of skating? A low stance and triple extension of the stride leg produces the most power, whereas a more upright stance and not incorporating a toe flick would reduce power.

I'm applying CLA to negotiation training but I had to gain a deep understanding of affordances before making the connection. Neuroscience is finding alot of evidence that a learners history of trauma has a significant impact on affordance recognition. 30:01 I love that you used this particular movement solution example (jumping to pass when pressured) because you can use Tyrese Halliburton as a direct muse. He’s has one of the higher turnover per game stats in the NBA, and it comes almost exclusively from his passing (he’s very safe/conservative on the dribble). But for HIM, his aerial verticality (for vision to swing/kick on switches or doubles) and body control while passing is still definitely worth the turnover tradeoff. But would that make sense for everyone to develop? Well, he’s a good couple inches taller than most of his direct defenders, as well as having a long wingspan relative to his height. He has been using and practicing this skill for a long time so his pattern recognition of it is high and is releasing before the closeout completes. And he tends to draw doubles/help to open up the vision all together. It became an effective movement solution for HIM, even though that’s not something you’d theoretically want to develop to the highest degree in everyone!

One thing that I can't seem to reconcile is how individual practice away from the rink affects skill acquisition. Many, if not most, really successful players presumably practiced a ton away from the rink. If someone is shooting pucks or stickhandling on their own without other players/constraints, is this of no value? How can someone create constraints? Shooter tutors? Or other objects blocking net? In terms of variability, shooting from different distances, or angles would apply. For stickhandling this gets tough...Any thoughts?

Thanks, Rob, for reviewing our study. As you highlighted, the key lies in testing under 'constant' conditions. We tried to test the effect of variable practice even when the test itself had extremely reduced variability. In fact, the group you refer to as the control group did constant practice. Although we probably shouldn't have called it that. As you correctly point out, every time the participant picks up the ball, they do so in a slightly different way, they never repeat the same range of motion…, and even during the final throws, they might be more fatigued (not measured) or even more bored. So, we should have called it the extremely low variability group… Despite several calls to consider the characteristics of the skill and the learners when applying variability, few studies still address these variables. We've gained valuable insights from this experiment, and hope our new study, which dives deeper into this issue, will offer more and better. Coming soon ;-) Thanks for sharing your perspective.

Like is there anyway you could step through how you would teach a roundhouse kick with constraints, and then how you would design safe sparring games with constraints. Introduction and Overview Greg Souders, a submission grappling and Jiu-Jitsu coach, discusses his coaching philosophy and methodology. He emphasizes an ecological approach, focusing on simplifying Jiu-Jitsu into basic human behaviors and the overall system of interaction. Coaching Philosophy Traditional Jiu-Jitsu training involves learning moves and techniques in isolation. Greg advocates for a more holistic approach, considering the entire system, including environmental and psychological factors. He focuses on immobilization as a fundamental concept, leading to more complex skills like strangulation and breaking. Training Methodology Greg uses games and tasks to teach skills, starting with end states and working backward to more complex situations. Training involves high variability and frequent practice to develop adaptability. He emphasizes external focus and immediate feedback based on the opponent's reactions. Skill Development Training progresses from low variability situations to more complex and dynamic interactions. Greg discusses the importance of understanding and manipulating relationships between body segments (e.g., wrist, elbow, shoulder). Advanced Training Advanced students face more complex tasks and longer practice times to enhance their skills. Variability and novelty are constantly introduced to challenge and develop higher-level skills. Deception and Strategy Deception is a crucial aspect of grappling, involving movements that appear to be one thing but result in another. Greg teaches students to understand and manipulate their opponent's responses through strategic actions. Individual Constraints Training is tailored to individual constraints, such as size and body type. For example, larger athletes may need different strategies due to their physical limitations. Use of Language and Communication Consistent language and communication are used in both practice and competition to maintain focus and reduce cognitive load. Greg avoids introducing new terminology during competitions to prevent confusion. Intrinsic Dynamics Greg recognizes the importance of intrinsic dynamics, allowing students to find their own solutions within guided parameters. He uses practice design as the primary intervention tool to facilitate learning. Film and Feedback While not extensively used in class, students are encouraged to film their practice sessions for self-analysis and improvement. Ecological Approach and Learning Theory Greg integrates ecological dynamics principles, such as invariants and attractors, to guide his coaching. He emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. Further Studies Suggested Exploring Ecological Dynamics in Combat Sports Investigate the application of ecological dynamics principles in various combat sports, comparing different training methodologies. Variability in Skill Acquisition Study the impact of high variability training on skill acquisition and performance in grappling and other sports. Deception and Strategic Movement Analyze the role of deception in combat sports, including the psychological and physical aspects. Intrinsic Dynamics and Personalized Training Examine how intrinsic dynamics influence training outcomes and the effectiveness of personalized training approaches. Use of Technology in Training Explore the benefits and challenges of using video analysis and other technologies in sports training. Impact of Environmental and Psychological Factors Investigate how environmental and psychological factors affect performance and learning in combat sports.
