Photos during the restoration period over the past 2 years. Inside and outside. We used 2k paint NATO BS285, spray guns devilbiss DV1 & Devilbiss Prolite and operator Ashley Gleed, we manufactured 2 x 2mm steel panels by oursleves. Music not for everyone but its free Happy days and bonus track L60 engine roaring away at the beginning and end of video - sounds great :)

JCB 3CX APC PRO fitted with rotating grab

First and foremost simply demostrating some uses beyond digging holes a 3CX can do and yes it would of been much faster to use the front 4 in 1 bucket :) So it's my good self clearing rubbish using a grab fitted to a JCB 3CX APC PRO 2019 excavator.

Looks like 04eb32
I used to command 01EB32 when I was A Sqn 4RTR back in late 80s, had to check the reg no on my photos though when this came up. FEAR Naught 🏴🏴
Nice
Do update us when this old gal runs
Yes will do soon :)
I bet the crews loved doing all this :) 😂
Yeah they did ……NOT!!! 🤣👍 something to do with the endless orange rust was the main moan of the day!
Absolutely stunning doing this cold war work horse a honor 👍
Thank you for the nice comment, very much appreciated 🇬🇧👍
Thank you for restoring and taking care of a piece of history
This is going to be the mintest Chieftain ever 👍
Looks awsome . You did a grand job .
Very nice. Well done. I like the yellow pipe work. Puts mine to shame..😃
Thank you - we still have a little way to go but certainly close to finishing 😁
I could have sworn I commented on this?
Sorry you did and thank you - had an issue with content.
@@simongleed Ah ok. Thought I was going senile! 😂
@@FrontSideBus 🤣 I confirm your not going senile 👍
again that just amazing, its probably better than when it was first delivered from layland! amazing attention to detail.
Thank you 👍 👍
That's just tank p.rn
That is seriously incredible work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you. We most recently completed the engine bay. I will post a video soon.
Wow. So clean and shiny!!
Thank you 👍👍
04eb32 where is this chieftain now
How much would this tractor go for? I’ve got one and very curious
I guess it depends on the condition and whether it’s a Leyland 804 or a Marshall 804. The Leyland 804 there was not a lot of them produced before they were rebranded to Marshall. If yours is a Leyalnd or a Marshall it will be worth restoring. I paid £4,550.00 + vat for a very poor condition Leyland. I have seen none restored but working 804’s sell for over £9,000 + vat These old tractors are collectors tractor now so if you got one it would be worth restoring or simply dry store the tractor for when you ready to sell.
@@simongleed mint condition mate and it’s a leyland
@@kieranjones2021 You have a tractor worth keeping - I have replaced pipes, cables, cab, brakes slave and master cylinders, crown and pinion, hydrulic arm internal ram, the list goes on spent over 9,000 in parts (old stock new) classic tractor mag did a write up on the old girl. If you don’t need to sell them hold on it.
@@simongleed I’m holding onto it for dear life I was just curious about the value
Nice example.great cab even by todays standard.
Thank you and 100% agree the cab fantastic. British Leyland really thought about the driver comfortability.
@@simongleed I've got the Leylands with q cab on my channel. You can winge about cab but position of the gear levers are excellent. Got a case also and that's 13years newer and still not as good on the gearbox.
Out of all guns to get he got the best one 😂
What.is.differance.between.780.and.770.can.someone.tell.?
770 is less horse power than that of the 780 Engine displacement (cm3) 770 = 2400 780 = 2695
Must be some of the last built in Bathgate Scotland. Lovely job.
Absolutely beautiful! Its great seeing these vehicles being cared for. We have a MK 11 in our museum although its unfortunately not ours
Thank you Armourgeddon :) We spent many hours restoring this old Vickers Chieftain tank and very happy with the end result. We still have the engine bay to do although its in excellent condition for the year.
@simongleed this may be a strange question but where can I purchase a mk10
Wouldnt i love to get up from the breakfast and get up on her for a days mowing .be as proud as punch .may she give lots of hrs of trouble free fun ❤
Very nice! Hopefully Mr Hewes can get their turret working too.
Yes hopefully fingers crossed as these old chieftain in working order are becoming less as the years trip on. Must keep as many running as possible I feel. 🙏👍
Absolutely perfect job, better than factory fresh! Great stuff
👍 she looks mint a beautiful machine
Looks brand new!
Loved these, had a 282 synchro. Used to hang in with Ford 7600 with same trailers. Turbo glowed cherry red. Fond memories.. SJS 447V if anyone knows where it went. It was traded for a 8111 zetor (which I still have) E plate with the original grays loader that was on the Leyland. Still working. 😂❤
I also have great memories which caused me to purchase this gorgeous old girl and spend many many thousands of pounds restoring her. Lovely sounding engine and the turbo whistling happy away :) yes quite a tractor in their time. 👍
Lovely tractor bombproof 4/98 and the sekura cab was a great advance on the old square ones.
What size is the tyre's?
I cannot remember but I will take a look tomorrow for you be back in touch soon.
Tyers sizes as promised. Back Tyer 480/70 R34 Front Tyer 380/70 R28 (Kleber tyers) Regards Simon
Great job youve done with the tractor and the tyres really set her off, thanks for reply
Sorry till bother you again but what brand of drop arm did you use from elbow to arm, mine are busted on my 802
@@rabmurphy7089 Not a problem, anytime :) Are you talking about the hydrulic lift arms? I didn't replace anything to do with the lift arm hydrulics. Try Charnleys and Son this company seems have alot of Marshall and Leyland aparts. www.charnleys.com/parts
Nice tractor
Such a good looking tank, excellent job to save a legendary tank.
Thank you 😊
Looks factory fresh! Well done!
Thank you 😊
What front axle is their? Number or type?
I will find out for you tomorrow.
Hi it’s a Carrera Axel sorry no numbers that I can find at pressent
Not connected to the breaker line! this JCB fitted with extra circuits for attachments Low and high pressure circuits. The grab is mainly used for handling HDPE pipe, we also have a flail mulcher attachment for clearing laydown areas for horizontal directional drilling setup.
Where can I get this fitted on my 2019 JCB 3cx please
@@johndobson9005 I used fast fluids power Raglan Monmouthshire. www.fastfluidpower.co.uk They will advise you on what you need to do. Mention Simon Gleed Gleed Services ltd
How did you get it to rotate from breaker lines as well as grab?
Wow! My Chieftain 01FD02 was never this clean, great work on the old girl.
Thank you Mike, I appreciate your comment. Just been on Merlin Archive there's a photo of your old tank on this site. she was in service from 1971 to 1994 disposal 1995 Link below merlinarchive.uk/vehicle/01FD02
My friend has one and I’m trying to help her fix and sell it. Where would I get parts and find someone who knows about them. We are in the States.
Hi. I got all my parts from Charnleys Tractors in the UK, might be worth sending an email to them as they may supply to a company in the states or Charnleys most likely post the parts to you. link to Charnleys web site below. They have every part for Leyland/Marshall tractors. Best of luck. www.charnleys.com/parts
40something years ago, working for a company called Akebia, I helped to develop a microprocessor controlled video game system for trainee Chieftain tank gunners. It plugged into a standard TV and used real IFCS gun controllers (joystick and firing controller) so needed a 50v 400Hz a/c supply. My design used an audio power amp module driven by a sine wave generator chip. I took the prototype up to Catterick where the Queen's Own Hussars trialled it. It was intended to save money by allowing new trainees to get the basic co-ordination of using IFCS (ammo select, tracking the target, laying and firing) before training in the full simulator. That simulator was a real Chieftain turret sat in a block of concrete inside a large shed. One wall of the shed was a rather comical looking battlefield scene with model moving targets. No large screen graphics in those days. The most challenging bit of my project was procuring the connectors for the controllers. When I started I was told the lead time for connectors was 8 months. After some digging I tracked down an MoD person who said he had a drawerful of samples which he just sent to me free of charge. The gods smiled on me that day! Thanks for the video. That is a hobby and a half.
What a fantastic read, I never knew anything existed like that in the 80’s - thank you sharing your past. 👍👍
What a great Job you and Sid are doing on this Tank!
Hey thank you Chris I appreciate your comment. Between myself, Ashley, Lewie and Marcus we are very pleased and proud of the work completed so far to this fabulous peace of British engineering by Vickers.
beautiful tank! there is a MK11 at the aldershot military museum, and a prototype challenger 1, and there getting in such a state of disrepair, they havent been touched since the army donated them in 2000, thats why its great you have brought this back to life. nothing like a screaming chieftain!
Thnak you for your comment :) We are finally getting to the finish line and it feel great too. I didnt know that re Chieftain MK11 and Challenger MK1 at Aldershot! when i'm in the area again i'll drop in and take a look but what a shame, even retired tanks need care and attention if they are going to stand the test of time. Applougies for not replying back to your privous email over the weekend. I have fond memories of helping my uncle work on his Foden 290L artic lorries back in the early eighties, greasing, fueling and cleaning them over a weekend and the highlight of the day was to drive them around the yard to hook up to a trailer loaded with british steel it was great fun - Happy Days.
@@simongleed don’t be silly! I play the trumpet for a living, takes me weeks sometimes to get back. the poor old chally one has the rear suspension sagging, and they for some reason removed all the vision blocks in both, so I hate to think about the insides 😬
@@mrtankalotrctankschannel 🤣👍 please don’t tell me they are left outside! If that’s the case the inside of the turret will be in poor condition! I feel a purchase coming on 🤣🤣 Chieftain Hatch put out a walk round video of a challenger 1 recently. This guy explains the IFCS, laser ranging and targeting, it’s the same system that’s in my Chieftain.
@@simongleed yep outside, really heart breaking, the prototype chally has its chobham armour packs removed (or never fitted, you tap it and it’s hollow)and no togs, very early tank. it’s amazing the tech they had in the 80.
That’s saddens me to think these old British Vickers tanks are left outside to deteriorate as time passes by. All the more to go and visit the Museum this summer.
WHEN I CAN BUY GRAB LIKE THIS ??
Wouldn't it have been easier with the front 4 in 1 or 6 in 1 depending on who you talk to...
Yes alot quicker using 4 in 1, I was simply trying out the grab 👍
Oh wow she literally is out the box! Awesome 👌 great job on that.
Thank you Pete for your kind words. To treat the rust on your Leyland try a product called Jenolite Rust Converter, its in a spray tin and when in contact with rust the Jenolite has a chemical reaction and seals the rust - excellent product you can purchase it from amazone. Best of luck and looking forward to more of your content. All the very best Simon
I think I just fell in love
Totally spoilt by the sound of that crappy music instead of one of the best ever sounding 2Stroke diesel engines ever fitted to a vehicle. The engine itself was totally unreliable but the sound of the engine is fantastic !! The only good thing about the engine !!! Do yourself a favour put the sound of the engine loading onto the transporter...PLEASE ???
Agree crap music. I will find some time to remove the music - re the engine correct on earlier L60 engines but the L60 engine came reliable on the 13a red top and 14a red top painted lime green. This tank fitted with 13a and I have reconditioned 14a. The engine howls out and most amazing sounding engine .
Evening I have removed the crappy music - enjoy the howling L60 :)
Could we get some video through the sight
Yes will do next week for you 👍
@@simongleed thankyou very much, especially interested if the gunsight symbology / aided laying function still works on the IFCS.
Thank you
Very clean and rust free. Must have taken ages to do. Subd
It certainly did take a some time to do but it was enjoyable. We have the engine area to clean and repaint so engine, transmission and GUE out. Will post some videos once we make a start. Thanks for your comment - much appreciated.
Nice work.
Thank you Sapper4668 appreciate your comment 🙂
And just how many are being made? The world is looking increasingly unstable and stupidly weak in the west and with increasing belligerent trouble making in the east. Just say we go to war as part of NATO with Russia and we only have 170 tanks we lose 50 in the first week just how and with what do we replace them with? How big are our reserves in terms of manpower and armaments? And even if we win the conflict by some miracle how long will it take to rearm? We are not talking or even including China
I have given that some thought too and I still come back to the same thing drones! Swarms of hunter killer drones. Theres talk of the Tempest fighter aircraft that’s under British development capable of either being a drone or piloted that will carry compact drone swarms to damage equipment on a battlefield. The drones will hunt for targets at speed and attack once a target been identified. So I guess artillery and tanks will become museum peace’s!
@@simongleed So we have drone wars then because our opponents will have them as well. We will need a lot more anti aircraft guns or anti drone weapons then and I do not see them. All I hear about are cuts to this and cuts to that just how long are our two aircraft carriers going to last against an attack by a swarm of a thousand drones let alone the survival our force of 170 tanks on a modern battlefield? We are on a hiding to nothing
@@brianmays1731 I guess we are Brien.
