The 22 Tomato Varieties I’m Growing In My Garden This Year!

Today I am sharing 22 tomato varieties, and the reasons why I chose them to grow in 2022 gardening season. I split the varieties into 3 groups: - Beefsteak/ Slicers (Black Sea Man, Paul Robeson, Black from Tula, Cherokee Purple, Pink Brandywine, Old German, Dr. Wyche’s, Pineapple, Azoychka, Thorburn’s Terra-Cotta, Mushroom Basket) - Early Maturing (Earliana, Aurora, Sasha Altai, Prescott, Black...
I've had that kind of curling on random plants before. It is not because of the variety, so please grow Black Cherry again! It's one of the best tasting cherry tomatoes. Just buy them from another company, in case there was a problem with the seeds.
Cherokee Purple you miss pronounced but it's a great tomatoes I'm Mid Ohio 6a and Black Krim are my favorite for it's early season steady production and one of my top favorites and my experience best for my slicers and wife's favorite. Black Brandywine is my favorite for taste Midnight Snack for snacks
Sweet, exotic, beautiful... the tomatoes are good too. No but seriously, great video.
you are eastern europian for sure
I have a heart for tomatoes on my way is growing more than I can eat. I'm enjoying your videos and I subscribe to your Channel today.

Interesting video. I have tried winter sowing before and was not successful but you have inspired me to try again. I have some pulsatilla and rhodiola seeds that need cold stratification that I have been trying to decide what to do with them and I think this might work perfectly for those!
Thank you for your comment! I'm really happy to hear that my video has inspired you to give winer sowing another try. It's true that sometimes things don't work out for a variety of reasons, many of which are beyond our control. It's great to keep trying, though! Regarding your gardening zone, I'm not sure what it is, but here's a bit of advice: Pulsatilla generally requires only about a 3-week cold period, so you still most likely have time. However, Rhodiola typically needs about 90 days of cold, so it might be a bit late in the season for it to germinate successfully. One method you could consider is placing it in a baggie in the fridge for 90 days, especially since winter is almost over, at least in my area. I wish you the best of luck with both plants - they are both fascinating medicinal herbs. And you've inspired me too! I'm now more motivated to expand my own collection of medicinal plants this year.
@@skyblueoasis3147 Thank you for the tips on Rhodiola and Pulsatilla, I appreciate it since I am new to both of them! I am in zone 4, our last frost date is typically the end of May so I think I would be ok on the Rhodiola? Although I have been hesitating because we have had an unusually warm winter so far.
If you are in zone 4 then I think you should be ok. Our winter is also pretty warm this season. Here is my tip: if you try at least you have a chance of your seeds germinating. If you hold off then nothing will germinate. Maybe try with half of the seed packet. In the best case you will end up with beautiful plants. In the worst case you will try again next year 😊 @@FulbrightFarmstead
@@skyblueoasis3147 My thoughts exactly, thank you! I look forward to following along with more of your videos!
Do you put holes in bottom of container?
Yes, I put holes in bottom of containers. They need drainage especially if there is a significant snow or rain fall. One thing also to watch out for that I forgot to mentioned in the video, when the bottom of container freezes, the drainage holes might get frozen too and prevent water from draining. That's why it is good to keep an eye on containers from time to time. It is still the most hands off method that I use for seed starting 😊🌱
I love your videos, and this is very similar to my situation where I have 34 chickens (one big rooster) and mostly white leghorns that are fantastic layers... I let them all out at around 2pm every day, after I feel that most of them have laid their daily eggs in the boxes I have provided, and they LOVE getting let out every day. They have 3 acres to wander around on but do not stray too far from where my house is. We have two dogs that are very gentle with them and I have a cat (FatCat) who looks EXACTLY like your black cat! Even the lovely green eyes...they do benefit a lot from free ranging, not only for the extra protein and greens but just the joy of freedom, it is very obvious to see the benefit it gives them :) Thanks for uploading..
Thank you for your comment. I’m glad to hear that your chickens also enjoy freedom. I’m sure they love the three acres of freedom and enjoy all the benefits that come with it. I love the name Fat Cat. My black cat is getting fat too from all the mice and other rodents that he catches. Maybe soon we’ll change his name from Barn Cat to Fat Cat.😊
@@skyblueoasis3147 Barncat is a cute name too :) Mine was a stray that was so thin when I heard him meowing in the tool shed, I didn't think he would survive... I think he lost about five lives with that one, but I continued to feed him meals every day (he was too scared to eat in front of me) ... but after a while he started coming up onto the deck and was soon eating with no fear... now he is the boss...(BossCat???) lol
What a heartwarming story. The BossCat was so lucky to end up in your tool shed. I'm sure all the meals made all the difference, and if not for you, his story would not have a happy ending. My BarnCat showed up at my place one day too. It took him almost six months to warm up to me. At first, he would not even eat in front of me. Now he follows me everywhere! Thank you for sharing your story.@@schlippery1
@@skyblueoasis3147 Very similar to my cat.. :) Have a great, safe and fun new year :)
It could be bacterial wilt, It is not a mystery.
I was thinking that too but would't bacteria wilt spread to the neighboring plants?
@@skyblueoasis3147 Rotate your Tomatoes the best way to doit not to plant the same spot bacterial pathogen can stay in the ground up to two years
I will try to rotate my tomatoes this year. The trellises are movable so it should be relatively easy to move them to a different spot. Also, I'm thinking of scaling down a little on tomatoes this year to give my soil a break and try something new. Thank you for the advice.@@Ms.Forsyth
I always grow Aunt Ruby's German Green...the Mini Napa Chardonnay sounds interesting as does Black Seaman, as growing in a different country have not yet 2023 tomatoes yet
I've never grown Aunt Ruby's German Green but I looked it up and it sounds like a great addition to my tomato list for 2024. Thank you for your suggestion! What country are you from?
I hope you don't give up on, Black From Tula, it really is a fantastic tasting tomato and referred to as the "best of the Blacks" for a reason!
Wonderful video!!!! Thank you!!!!
What temp does it need to be for them to be outside full time?
This video is soooo helpful! Thank you. I want to do this when we get our new home when we are ready!
Thanks for the infos!!! I use to plant this kind of tomato too!
Which usda weather zone are you with those snowy hillsides?
I'm also trying Taiga this year. I loved Carbon and Black Krim in past years. You might also like Black Sea Man it's a determinate but similar in taste. My favourite dark tomato is called Black Bear. I was on my last handful of seeds so I'm growing those out to save. If you enjoy the heart shaped tomatoes (they never disappoint for me) you can try Cuore di Bue. That's a great performer and wish I had space to grow this year but I'm also growing so many new varieties. I thought I had all my varieties sorted in the winter but then I saw so many taste testing videos that I am curious how they do: Lillian's yellow, Garden peach, Virginia Sweets, Dark Galaxy, Dester and Black Beauty. Good luck on your 2023 garden!
Thank you, beautiful scenery.
Great varieties! I haven't heard of Mermaid! I'll have to check that out! Yes, please do taste test videos. I love those 😅
Just finding your channel. I love seeing all the varieties!
MAN i cant wait to have my tomatoes again. i am growing 48 verities and over 100 plants. i love them. we can a lot of them for the winter. salas and pasta sause
Wow 48 verities and over 100 plants! That is a lot! Looks like we share love for tomatoes 😊. My plan was to can all my leftover tomatoes but I did not get to it yet. My new batch of tomatoes is already started but the tomatoes from last year are waiting patiently in the freezer to be canned. Hopefully I'll get to it this month.
And I love your channel. You have a new subscriber 😊
Thanks so much for your kind words! I really like dehydrating them for tomato paste lol 😆 I really can’t wait for the summer but canning in the summer heat is not fun at all! I normally spend every other day canning! Lol
Thank you. This was very helpful. Cute feather babies.
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you found this video helpful.
Kellogg's breakfast will always be a staple. First year I grew the variety, I had a moment when the first one was ripe holy moly sugar sweet like sun gold 😛
Sun gold tomatoes are delicious if Kellogg's breakfast is a as sweet as sun gold but bigger OMG can't wait!
very nice and informative video, thanks! had last year black krim, carbon, black from tula and cherokee chocolate - i will grow the black krim & cherokee chocolate this year again. i recommend also ivas sweet white (sweeetest cherry), rosa oma (pink slicer), sunviva (very resistent outdoor cherry) and sibirian tiger. can't wait to taste the new varieties this year!
Thank you for your comment and recommendations. I will try to still get seeds this year for Ivas Sweet White and Sunviva since I started only one cherry tomato variety this year - Purple Bumble Bee. I feel I need more. "More is More" when it comes to tomatoes! 😁 I'm glad that you had a success with growing Black Krim and liked it enough to grow it again. Fingers crossed I will feel about it the same.
@@skyblueoasis3147 black krim is an all time favorite for me, the flavour is just great! the cherokee chocolate was recommended and was one of the plants with the highest yield. as i like the flavour of these darker varieties a lot i will grow this year a lot of black and dark slicers and for the first time some green and white slicers too…
Such a great selection for this year. Ananas noire is one of my favorites. And I’m also growing Gary osena for the first time. Im very interested to see how Famous Strawberry and Mermaid turn out.
Ananas noire was such a popular suggestion. I'm glad that it is also one of your favorites! I can't wait to try it. I already planted my seeds but seems like a long wait before I get to try them. I'm also very interested to try how Famous Strawberry and Mermaid turn out. Especially, Mermaid because it was close to impassible to source seed for that one so it must be pretty rare. I will definitely save seeds if I like it.
.. This Is a Very Interesting Episode, I Truly Believe That These One's, The "Green Zebra" and The "Lucid Gem" Will Be My Favorite To See!.. Thank-you!

Thank you! I'm glad you have grown a lot of the varieties and agree with my choice 😁. They are all new to me but can't wait to try them.
Black pineapple was a big let down taste didn't produce sickly. Black Brandywine is my suggestion
oh no I'm sorry black pineapple was a big let down. Thank you for your suggestion. I've never tried to grow Black Brandywine but if I love Pink Brandywine I'm sure Black Brandywine will not disappoint. I'll try to still get seeds. It's not too late yet! 😊
Pink Brandywine is going on next season as my seeds are delivered. Last season I tried 26 and to many disappointing but Black Brandywine top slider and Midnight Snack best salad Thornbury Terracotta is most delicious by itself
@@johnjude2685 I've grown Thorburn's Terracotta and I 100% agree with you - it is most delicious by itself. I will miss it this year. I ordered Black Brandywine seeds and I will try this variety this year! Can't wait to see how it does in my garden.

Thank you! 😊
Thanks for this video! You have a beautiful property, I envy that, ha. We have only 3 hens - Americana, Easter Egger and the other I don’t know what she is, but she is small, solid black in color and she has very curly feathers. She lays 1 egg everyday! She is in a brooder mood because has been sitting on her eggs for about 3 weeks. 2 of her eggs hatched and we have 2 healthy chicks now. The Easter egger is about 7 months old and still has not layed any eggs yet. The Americana lays an egg only 2 times per week appx. We also have a rooster, appx 10 months old and he sometimes picks on the Easter Egger, maybe that’s why she hasn’t layed any eggs?
Thank you for your comment. Looks like you have a very interesting mix of chickens yourself. 😁 Especially the curly feathers one. Maybe it is the Fizzle. They are known for curly feathers. My Easter Egger was last one to lay eggs but once she started she is petty consistent. It is very possible that your Easter Egger is stressed if the rooster picks on her and this can impact her egg laying abilities. There is also a possibility that she might be laying somewhere else and not in the coop especially if she does not feel safe because of the rooster picking on her. My new rooster also started to pick on one of the hens so we separated him for few hours each day to give her a break and after a week or so he stopped. Now everyone gets along.

Thank you for your comment and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. There is so many tomato verities that it impossible to try them all. But one can keep trying 😊
Growing tomatoes for flavor is the right attitude!
Thank you for your comment. I 100% agree. If it does not tase good what is the point of growing it! 😊
@@skyblueoasis3147 Exactly! 😆
If you plan on eating next year you might wont to get chicks now or do with out
This is a great time to get chicks especially with egg prices going up and up. My chicks from last year are doing great and they give us a lot of eggs but not enough for all of our needs. We are getting 5 more this year. 😁
Thank for another very thorough video :) I have 30 chicks on order and will be receiving them in the mail in April, (20 leghorns and 10 barred rocks) and I have been wondering how I shall keep them in the house for a couple of weeks :) I may have to get a couple of those plastic crates.... Thanks again and good luck with the little ones :)
Thank you for your comment. I also have new chicks on order. 😊 This year I'm trying a new bread Whiting True Blue, which is a new breed created in my region. These plastic crates work very well. Those kale are huge! They could be robbing sunlight as well as nitrogen.

Test your soil
Thank you for the suggestion. I was planing to do a chemical analysis last year but the time just got away from me. I also invested in microscope to see all the biology in the soil. This year I will invest more in learning about my soil and improve it based on my finding.

Thank you for your comment. They already got bigger but we got so much snow that it is so difficult to get to them 😂. The snow is to my knees so I think I have to wait till spring to dig my little hoop house out and get to my greens.
I want to do this so my young kids can experience this. Over last few month what's the cost of raising them
The starting costs can be substantial especially if this is your first time raising chicks and need to get all the supplies. I broke down the costs for raising chicks: Raising Chicks Must haves: Brooder - rage from $49 to $150 ( one time investment) Grit - $17 (lasts for a long time) Feed - chick starter - $30 Bedding - $10 (one bag should be enough) Chicken feeders range from $8 to $50 ( one time investment) Big Bin - $40 ( one time investment) Once chicks are big enough to go to their permanent coop the costs are very low. I only spend money on feed and bedding but this is because my chickens free range. When chickens free range they go through feed slowly and I also supplement their feed with food scraps. Also, I have a very cheap source for bedding (pine shavings) from the local lumber yard. I spend around $20 per year. A 40 lb bag of feed for on average $30 lasts me at least two months and in the warmer months even longer. The biggest cost is investing in building or buying chicken coop. This can vary depending on how big you want your coop to be. A decent prefab chicken coop costs around $500. If you want to build one with recycled materials it can be more affordable. Or buying second hand chicken coop is also an option. I’m not including costs for medication. Chickens sometimes get sick so of course this can be an added cost. Also if you want to spoil them with mealworms or different treats that is also an added cost. Raising chickens is a great experience for kids. My nephews love my chickens and I think because of them they visit me more often. 😊
Laying hens can provide food and eggs to hatch more food and eggs
I’m so obsessed on growing tomatoes 🍅 too
I can relate to that 😊. I can't wait for seed starting time. I bought so many new verities. It is an obsession. 😂
