Hoist rescue of hiker with major head injuries.
On Sunday, October 27, 2024 the aircrew from Rescue 9 was dispatched to an area of Mount San Jacinto, near Palm Springs,. A hiker had called 911 to report that his friend had fallen approximately 25 feet and sustained major injuries. He was able to give his exact location thanks to a personal locator device, such as a Garmin, or InReach. The injured hiker was located in a rescue specialist, began treating him and prepared him for hoist. He was hoisted off the mountain and flown down to an ambulance where he was transported to the hospital and treated for injuries. Like with other rescues, no one is charged for the services in Riverside County. If you were hiking and find yourself even i...

Out of curiosity, was there a reason that you didn't place a cervical collar on him before hoisting? Given that he fell and sustained head injuries, I'd be stressed about the spine and head. Great video and great rescue, respect to you guys.

I noticed the c-collar on the injured victim and was curious that there wasn't a need for a back board as well. I know in general it used to be that everyone with any sort of trauma was back-boarded, and services have decided that was excessive, delayed care, etc. In this case, it seems like it would have been appropriate, though. What was the reasoning on the scene that we can't see?

    • @Hook-in-hand

@@KuopassaTv Many could hear that statement and understand where it is coming from. However, given the circumstances, the quickest and highest probability for safe outcome was to use his harness. He was in a bad way. We have another rescue on here where the safest option, in the assessment of the rescue specialist, was to not use the climber's own harness but to put him in our rescue seat. Every call is different.
