I am a 40 something year old gamer that somewhere along the line lost the patience or attention span to play modern video games. Sometimes a new game comes along that really grabs me and I will play the heck out of it, but that is rare.
So I decided to go back in time to my first video game system, the Atari 2600 and give every video game made for that and other retro systems a chance to capture my short attention span. I will be playing/reviewing the games in rough order of their original release date and playing as much as I can tolerate. My first systems will be the 2600 and the NES. Join me won't you?

You should play Pocky & Rocky with one of your boys, two player CO-OP is a lot of fun. Go to the options menu and put the game on Easy difficulty as well, so you won't give up on it. The last few levels and final boss are fairly challenging on Normal difficulty.
@@Chocoburger my boys? If you mean my dog he's not very good at games.
@spanlessgamer I thought you had a music video where two boys joined in. I assumed they were your sons, maybe your nephews? Or perhaps you're a very bad person who's committed a very bad deed. Forcing random children to sing with an old out-of-tune man for an online video. 🎶🎙️🎵
@@Chocoburger If you are referring to my cover of "Don't Stop Believing" you might want to watch again. The other two people in the video were just copies of me created with digital editing magic lol
@@spanlessgamer OK, what about your awards show, wasn't there someone else there, or has my memory failed me completely? 😅
@@Chocoburger Nope, the awards show was just me and the dog. I did have a "rap" song in it, but nobody else was there.
Cybernator you say... mmm I think you should play the Japanese original instead. It has a fan translation and there's also an officially released english version (I think it released a year ago) without the censor and all the cut content. It's called Assault Suits Valken.
I still had fun with it, despite all that!
Sure, but the Japanese original is a lot more story-focused. There are more characters and full lines of dialogue that got removed in the USA and EU. That's why I suggest it.
@ I'll give it a try next time I want to enjoy a game
Cool! 😁 Talking about SNES games, have you tried Mr. Tuff? It's a platformer that was originally released for the 32X. It was going to have a SNES version but got cancelled, until a year ago when it finally got an official release in both digital and cartridge format. Try it out if you haven't.

8:41 The fact that a legal adult (as seen in the eyes of the United States government), not only has to bring this up in regards to classic game pixel art animation, but also actively encourages viewers to focus and watch a pixel man rub his pixel shotgun is hilarious. 😂 Pixel art gun-sturbation aside, Sunset Riders is a lot of fun, and has an arcade perfect port on PS4 and Switch. 🔫

I enjoyed Dirt Trax. I remember getting into it as a rental and wound up buying my own copy later on.
@@owlbelieveit6811 I just couldn't get into it. Then again racing games have never been my jam.
@spanlessgamer that's fair
@ I can probably list all racing games I have loved. Various Mario karts, iron man Stewart's off road, tv pro am, rock and roll racing, hard driving arcade, various gran turismos, a few forza games, and that's about the entire list lol
I can't help but think that Dirt Trax FX was developed a decade before Acclaim released it 1991. Maybe publishers have a back burner they pull games from when their sales volumes are falling.
Maybe, I mean it's like free money after enough time passes right?
@@spanlessgamerOnly if sales surpass the cost to publish. I have a feeling that cost was much lower in the 90s

I think I played Civ I on PC once or twice but I'm not sure if I beat it. I usually aim for a tech victory but I thought the yech victory equals colonizing Alpha Centurai aspect was added later. It was actually in Civ I so either I didn't win or hit another victory condition.

@@methirsty so far so good. But there's still time!
I had all of these as a kid except for the Porky Pig which I rented. I loved Big Sky Trooper when I was a kid. Its been many years since I played but I remember the space battle sections being kind of like Asteroids while ground combat was like True Lies. Did you get the briefing telling you where you needed to go for your first mission? I can't remember but I think you might not be able to move your ship until you get briefed. And of course after your first battle the ship FIFI whom FIDO is in love with appears to clean up the debris left in your wake. I don't recall if FIDO ever works up the courage to ask her out but I hope he did and it went well. Secret of Evermore was a lot of fun, and I loved the alchemy system. I wish it got re-released on the 3DS Virtual Console or remastered on the Switch. The reason you were doing so little damage is you were using the weakest attacks possible over and over instead of waiting for your attack to charge. You don't even have to hold a button to charge regular attacks just wat a few moments between swings. Melee attacks work like Secret of Mana and have the charge percentage shown so you know to wait.
@@roguerifter9724 I don't think I got the briefing. I should dig more into secret of evermore too. Seems good

@@Chocoburger I'm sure it's been in a comic at some point!
This was stupid. I would give it higher if there wasn't Zelda on the NES. I would give it higher if there wasn't Sonic on the Mega Drive. Both GWA and Sonic are BETTER games than Zelda on the NES and Sonic on the MD. Zelda on the NES looks obnoxious, as if they thought they were programming the Atari 2600. Even Atari 2600 games look better. I would even say GWA is better than LttP which is quite annoying most of the time (that music! that needless chopping of stuff on the ground!). Neutopia II is still king of the genre, but GWA is a good runner up. And Sonic on the MD looks shiny, as a game it stinks, as it omits basic platformer essentials, all done right on the SMS/GG. I thingk Sonic 2 on the SMS is maybe the best 2D original Sonic platformer of all time, especially as the composer outclassed its MD collegue and the game has much better playability than the MD titles.
