I know this is 10 yrs ago but they had bandsaws then. Why anyone would choose to cut rod with a hack saw is beyond me. Such a waste of time and effort
Suppose to use the head wrench

how's it going? I'm about 8 months in at 669. got any tips or advice?
I have ben a fitter for over 50 years, the union has sent me a gold card, where the fuck do you work?I have never seen a head made up in the machine?did you ever hear of using two wrenches? you work like a fucking plumber?
on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to get into this trade for a female? I'm looking at my options and this one on my top 3
For installation I’d say 7 out of 10 quite difficult but not impossible. Most women in the trade are in the fab workshops or service
That's right! Looks like you got it down. This was my first week doing this and I'm loving it so far.
Sup bro how are you liking it now
@@edsoncuevas7652 not too bad.
@@PopeyeModesto bro I'ma be an apprentice soon. I'm super nervous. I don't kno what I need I feel like I might be too dumb
@@kararal9834I’ve been at North Star fire protection now for 2 and a half months so I’m green too but I can tell you you aren’t too dumb
Hope you guys doing well been doing this about 2 years but recently transferred to the service side so still learning
Hacksaw, no pipe dope or tape, using crescent on head and on the machine (your foreman isn't teaching you well.)
I don’t do it that often but i do love the dope on the tape to mark the pipe lol
I've been slinging pipe since 1990 and it was nice to see the up and comers are using the latest tech to highlight the trade , well done
No dope and tape?
The good ol days of hard piping a drop. Nowadays just use whips it alot easier and faster to insall.
Pretty cool to watch, I’m 18 right now and been working as an apprentice since 17. We’re doing a shit ton of grow houses now. I’m still in school too for plumbing. The pay for sprinkler fitting is good but no side work, should I get my plumbing license first and then my sprinkler license?
Where’s the tape an dope?! Where is the extra play for the ring to be ajusted?!
Was this in the spring?
Lol. Buried the 1st head
The life of an apprentice lol I remember those days. Those were the easy days
Keep on moving forward, all these “oh I’m faster than guy” comments. Don’t sweat em, as long you’re learning and improving your style and moving forward you got it.
My friend and I are looking into getting into an apprenticeship for sprinkler fitting.
NEVER PULL IN A SPRINKLER HEAD WITH A POWER MACHINE..
Been pulling heads on for some time on the machine. No broken heads, no leaks, no problems. What’s your excuse? Union tell you it’s not the proper way?
Easy with the union shit babe. I been union for 11 years. Everybody is different. I know plenty of union guys that never use the machine to tight heads and I know plenty of union guys that do. It’s a personal Preference. Every single Manufacturer says not to. Read the literature that comes in the box of heads. But damn near all of us still do.
Oh chill out u fuckerfaces...I still do as well just talking a little shit is all ..
Ten seconds in and I guess there’s just no Teflon in that part of the world lmao. And resting the wrench on the 300 to tighten the RC. How do you know your threads are consistent??
Good way to crack a fitting also. My j man taught me to never do that
Are you two serious? Your dumbasses mean to tell me that you make EVERY FITTING on in the air or on a vise? You don’t pull any fittings on with the machine? 😂😂😂 I’m Guessing your both scabs and we’re never taught properly.
May I ask how much you make?
Journeymen make $65/hr in Cali
@@djdradp8baller2 shit really? union?
Bro the way you used that threading machine to tight shiet up i got claped a few times wen i did that as a apprentice and i threw a few pipes around as a boss to who ever did it that is just wrong that is why they have vices anyways thankx for the video miss the work here in Portugal
I was the pipe
No hemp n soap m8
Not on this side of the globe. Teflon tape and pipe dope only.
Bunch of idiots in the comments think they God's gift to sprinkler fitting. Those are the ones that most likely the biggest hacks
Leaks all over the place lol
Maby www.snapdrill.no can help
I like the part where he tightens the head on the machine
Well if your a rookie then u shouldn't do it. If u know why the fuck u doin then there is no problem
Stupid
I’d fire myself if I was that slow.
If I catch my apprentice using the machine to tighten heads I'll kick his ass. That's a lazy ass way of doing that and it's 1/2 inch so not a tough job
from 45 seconds from where he marriemarked his "drop " notice where he actually ends up cutting it.... not in the same place
Where is this?
Aluminium 18” wrench, that’s cute.
What do you use a steel 24
I’m cute then
When i uploaded this i didn't realize how much critiquing I would get. I don't give a fuck if you don't like the way i do it. I do it right and i know what I'm doing. it was a day job and i was having some fun. I work in a timely manner that gets the job done on time. And yeah i am a union Fitter and proud of it. They have taken care of me and have my back. A company fucked me around and moths later i got a big check for what i was owed. you can try and hate on Union fitters all you want but its not going to get you anywhere except make you look like a moron. Awesome wage Benefits Training Standards Pension Compensation SUPPORT Travel Pay Whats your NON union company do for you?
A FUCKING MEN. Preach brother. Pittsburgh Sprinklerfitters LU 542 right here. Let them talk. We’ll be laughing all the way to the bank bro lol.
More like day in the life of an apprentice
They journeymen don't do this part of the job?
Jon Schissler straight up because I’m on a 140 ft boom lift stuffing pipe while he cuts it local 483 baby we’re the athletes of pipe fitting where that fuckin strong and fast 💨
Apprentice for sure. Btw where’s your hold back scabby? And where’s your gunner? 😂 your letting the elementary stuff slip that’s not a good look. Plus I for one can’t remember the last time I touched my 300 that’s for apprentices to show their worth.. Nice try bud stick with the trade tho it’s awesome I agree! 👍
@@BeardedBotanist 13 years in the trade now. This video is 7 years old...I never gave up and now I've got a wicked career. If you know the angles of what you are wrenching you simply do not need a hold back. if i was wrenching branch lines together in straight runs a hold back would be crucial but just swinging in drops just hold the pipe right. as an apprentice i learned that quickly.
@@patricksmith1692 the only bitch I would have is dont mess with your phone or a go pro while at work just do your thing! From what I can see is your alright and i run with all the ball busters local 669 AZ
There’s only one problem with this video Get some steel wrenches brov
huh? why would i buy steel wrenches?
Nice work
kudos for using the reamer but Id fire you for tightening that head with the machine
Matt Malloy Why? I've done that probably 10,000 times.
id say I'm more around 50,000 times lol. if you're not green you know how tight to put your heads. machine or not
I used to do it all the time. You know when the head gets tight enough. You’ll know whenever you’ve tighten it too much.
I feel sorry the guy that has to change those machine tightened heads some day. I hope he can lift a ridged 300 up to the ceiling to unscrew them
Gotta remove the drop and Chuck it up..... Install never thinks of service smh
I'm Beary Excited I do sprinkler maintenance jobs and let me tell you everything is always too tight. I can hang onto my pipe pliers and do pull ups on them. We once had a 2 inch pipe so hard stuck that when 2 men were hanging on pipe pliers, the galvanized 90 degree part that the pipe was threaded into, just broke in half!
It's a 1/2" thread will come out easy
ross721983 Yes 95% of the time, but sometimes they can be stuck very hard. Often the 1'' nipple will unthread instead of the sprinkler head if it's tight enough.
Juusto use a hold back on the drop or RC then. and a head wrench with the beauty plate spun up and no problems pulling a head. don't be a scab figure it out
A lot of crybabies in here.
I'm a new apprentice in sd local 669 and I fucked up a few recessed heads tightening on the machine but after a few screw ups you kinda learn how to avoid it.
Save yourself time on next cut/ thread... if making multiple cuts from pipes, after you cut what you need go ahead and thread remainder before taking it out of the chuck.
T. Witheld unless ur fabbing for your fitter. bring them said peice and while they install you go get another thread cut and taped
As I viewed this I got excited like a little fuckin kid to read the comments and see everyone pick this apart WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH OUR TRADE GENTLEMEN when did we all become cutthroat bitches? thank you for posting this video there are things I would have done differently BUT I'VE NEVER MADE A VIDEO so I have no grounds to say a fucking word
hes slow you can tell he is a union guy
Must be a union guy huh lol. That’s funny. I made more as 2nd or 3rd year apprentice than you scab foreman make. How the fuck can you not like unions. We protect our jobs, our work, we have two pensions, the whole nine. I agree with what the other guy said the most profitable companies out there by far are union companies. Bottom line is “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. SKILLED LABOR ISNT CHEAP AND CHEAP LABOR ISNT SKILLED”. Tell you the same thing I tell my customers. Let the scabs install it and we’ll be back within a year to start the repair work. You scabs keep our union service vans running around the clock. Pittsburgh Local 542
ua179 fitter here. fuck off scab
Signed in just to reply to ya. The problem with unions is they don’t sift through the shit. If you’re a lazy piece of shit; and do shit work, you shouldn’t be making the same as the guy who’s killing it. All of the ultra pro union guys I know are terrible employees. I’m certainly pro union as there is a necessity for it; however there’s too many scum bag sprinkler fitters that would rather play hide-and-seek on a high rise job than actually get shit done. You gotta admit it’s a problem. Also the mentality of “look at what I get as a union guy!” Is ridiculous. You personally didn’t do fuck all to earn that; the union did it. 4 years isn’t enough time to perfect the trade and earn the big bucks; can’t tell me buddy who spent 4 years installing heads in office buildings should be paid the same as someone who’s done 10+ slamming in deluge; dry; pre-action systems and fire pumps. The system is broken.
@@lost4843 this guy knows what he is talking about.
didn't show the part where he kinked the hvac guys flex
Eric Brown fuck a duct
O we cant do that lmao
gloves on a screwing machine fuck you're a brave man
I always wear gloves when running a power machine. Shouldn't have your hand in the dies anyhow.
they make these things called bandsaws. really quite effective. using a hacksaw to cut all thread is old school.
gobucks94 Motoxxx nothing wring with ols school
gobucks94 Motoxxx cordless grinder is the best. Bandsaw is alright too though
Ive been doing this for almost 12 years now. if its just one rod you cant beat the hacksaw. I normally just put the rod across a bucket but having to get the camera shot i wanted to have the rod stable. i nearly cut my finger off with a porta band saw removing a 1.5" line...
