CaptureOne's new updates are out, and boy-oh-boy are these updates "revolutionary". Hate the term, but these new features are nothing short of incredible. From quick and intuitive masking and layering, to a game-changing, preset-killing "match-look" tool, CaptureOne shows us time and time again why they are the cream of the colour grading crop. Let me know what you would use these features for!...

Sometimes, in this photography game of no right-or-wrong answers, it's hard to gauge what we're doing. With not much to compare to, it's hard to feel like we're doing the wrong thing. Clever words from you (again) today Sergio 👐Love watching every one of your videos!
I changed to C1 after being assistant for a famous fashion photographer here in Sweden. Just how the tethering works, flawless, fast etc. But for me, I use a Canon R5, I know it's in my head, but I think the images looks better and shaper in C1, I always get to the result I want fast in C1.
Once again great content and serious things to consider. Thank you. 😊
Haha I feel like you made this vid just for me.
🫵
Very sleek content, light, color, theme, etc, keep it forward!
Thank you!

Your channel is a hidden gem my man, such real, useful information
Thanks Curtis! Happy to hear ✌️
Id love to use Capture One but its too expensive for less software so i guess ill go back to Adobe, sadly.
Revolutionary would be for C1 to actually respect the perpetual license owners. You pay 350eur and you get software that is not supported and doesn't get even minor updates within weeks. All this is just a catch up to Adobe. Unfortunately they are catching up with pricing policies and poor support much quicker than with the features.
I've left Adobe years ago but I'm coming back now. With Phase One's aggressive pricing and complete disregard to customer's requests Adobe somehow became the lesser evil in the end.... and much cheaper too. C1 subscription is not only more expensive, but perpetual license owners who used to get updates until the next major version, now only get minor updates until the next minor versions and get absolutely no customer support. It's a disgrace, for 350eur or so. Also if you occasionally have to work with JPGs the results are terrible
Such a great video, Sergio - I loved to see your work proces and would definitely enjoy to see more like these (either on an actual set/client photoshoot or like here) 👐 Well done!
Great info. Thank you. Love the Super Clamp and Magic Arm boom hahaha
Great stuff. I recently started using a tilt shift

oh boy, glad you referenced Terry's dodgy past haha, was worried for a second there. Anyway, I love the on camera flash look for commercial work, been using it for years!
I'll be really honest. I think it looks like dog shit...... the problem with people like me we are Australians and we are completely blunt. I can't stand those images if a client asked me to do it I'd be able to do it no problems at all but I'm certainly not gonna go out of my way to start taking photos like this I think they look horrendous. They look washed out and overexposed and I know that's the trend but oh my gosh seriously that's a look all I can say is wow!! And I know RUclips titles are about getting clicks but this is not something we need to master with all due respect. I love your videos dude cause you're always talking about different things but this is just rubbish. Photography it really is.
Booooooo! I love it! Hahaha
If you want to be a working pro photographer, you definetly need to learn the trends. It's simple, if the product of your client is shot in fashionable manner it will have more impact on their views, which translates into clicks and purchases. Then there's a simple matter of being able to shoot something worthy in this or that style - you can shoot amazing pictures with one light and absolutely cock up a shoot with full studio, stylist and assistants. Trend that i'm surely glad that died was monochromatic image with one selected color and HDR's as people often didn't understand what made good images work with this technique and applied it to everything. Very terry just looks like vintage album as all of the tricks in the video are few generations old at this point.
@matuszewskistudio I am a working no I wouldn't take that style of photo I wouldn't attach my name to it. I also believe copying someone else's style isn't a good thing. I don't believe in jumping on the back of trending things either. I've created my own path and i'm doing very well. I suspect that the trend would work very well in Canada or the USA. And I do really enjoy your channel.I just don't enjoy that style of photography at all and I wouldn't copy it.I don't care if I lose money over it either. Is something looks like dog shit I wouldn't attach my name to it.
@WilliamEdwardJacob I can take the humour it's so good.I thought I don't like something.I just don't like it.I'm so different now.I'm 54 years of age and I know what I like.And I know what I don't like.I also don't like following other people's trends....
@ I hate swimming down the main stream as well. It’s boring and gimmicky most the time. I do love this look tho, I feel like it’s a very classic fun style personally
Your videos are super informative and fun to watch. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep up the great work!
Thanks Chris!
Can you please explain the lightning scheme?
When I first started shooting professionally, I only carried one camera. That worked for me until I was given a newspaper assignment to shoot the maiden voyage of a new passenger plane the local university had purchased. It was then that I realized that if my camera broke while I was in the air, I would not be able to restage the event. Thank goodness, in addition to my SLR, I also carried a spare TLR that I borrowed from a studio where I also worked. The TLR was what I used to complete the assignment after my SLR broke immediately after takeoff.
thank you for sharing!
Very nice video Sergio, thanks for sharing valuable tips!
Paul Reiffer did a video on (among other things) "Match Look" just after the release and one of the things he demonstrated, was to take an image with just a collection of rectangular colour swathes to give a colour palette. Then he demonstrated how you could use that to colour grade an image to match the colour pallette you selected. So you're not taking another photo as input, but a selection of colours and tones. I hope the way I'm trying to explain makes sense. Would this be a way of working that would be useful to you as a professional photographer, when you need to achieve a certain look or fit in with a certain colour pallette?
great content. I love how you relate real instances to what equipment is useful. Most new photographers overlook that.
For the first point I feel like a great hybrid might be better than buy 2 cameras like if we forget your point on overheating which is indeed a good point, a Sony a7 IV allow you to switch from photo to video in a click sooooo
And what happens if the camera breaks down? There's the point
@@nikostsaknakhs6548 True yeah tho I feel a new camera wouldn't fail in the first years so why not just wait a few years with a great hybrid one and then buy a second great one too instead of buying 2 good ones that you might replace after few years
Greetings form NB! Thanks for this video. I'm into VoiceOver as well and I'm curious to know what microphone you're using.
Welcome Barry! It’s a rode wireless mic
If you shoot a lot on a tripod, I'd avoid a camera that has built in IBIS. Even when you turn it off, the camera sensor tends to move ever so slightly between shots and makes doing composites a real pain, so the R8 is great for that. I'd really love to see Canon make IBIS and non-ibis versions of their stable bread and butter cameras, either that, or make the IBIS really lock the sensor position when turned off, but that's just me.
Thanks for that insight Adrian! Had blissfully never considered it yet.
@ I have the RP, R5, R6, and R6II, and every time I think I’m going to need to do a composite, guess which camera I’m using? The RP because the other ones can’t keep the sensor from moving. It’s not as big of an issue if shooting a wide scene and dropping other elements in there, but if doing macro work where you like the background of one shot, but the lighting on the foreground of another shot (for example) and want to drop the foreground of the one image onto the other one, you’ll discover very quickly that they don’t line up quite right if using a camera with IBIS, which makes doing that more complicated than just putting the wanted foreground on a layer above the background and employing a layer mask.
This is a great video how how to get started. I think a lot of people get caught up in the GAS of it all and lose sight of the forest. Two bodies, two lenses, 4 batteries, two speed lights that can be triggered off camera, two 13+ foot light stands and two umbrellas cost shockingly little and cover most things you might want to shoot. A tripod is certainly useful, but not necessarily needed depending on what the niche is.
Good advice 👌
So so true! Other than the Sony + lens that I bought in my early days as new, all the rest was bought used. Rather unhealthy obsession with Kijiji and FB marketplace :( My main gear is 8-10 years old, so I'm not impressing anybody. But I also find it very freeing from constantly obsessing about this or that feature. Networking ... my Achilles heal. Don't even know where to start.
it's the last thing I expected being so important, and arguably more than the rest. Thanks for sharing!
I still use my XH1 for professional work. It's a great camera!
This was one of my favorite videos of yours so far. Would love to go skate and shoot with you sometime!

what software do u use for editing video? or talking head like this

Where have you been all this time ❤
5:47 "If you need to explain the gear you're using you may be impressing other photographers but that's not gonna affect your bottom line" is a wonderful, crystal clear way to put it, great point.
the probkem is that this is sold as something which works magically without any knowledge and in reality, it is magically if you really understand what the tools are doing what works how in an image, light etc. This tool with editing knowledge is spectacular, can work wonders. But what I see for people who don't have much knowledge it is frustrating, and they don't even have any clue what the problem is and why it is not working. Btw If you use more than one image for the matching it is even better. I used it for a job with mixed flash and ambientlighting from outside to match the look closer even when parameters changed a lot and it was extremly helpful. nothing spectacular to show, because normal people won't even notice the problem but it cuts of a lot of editing time
well said!
Every time I hear a "line" about how showing up on set with this or that brand of equipment makes you look more professional in the eyes of the client, I immediately know I'm listening to a talentless loser.
imagine what you could achieve if you spent your time differently.
I took one of my edited images, created a new variant of it, set the edited variant as a source for match look and applied it to the new variant. The result did not really match. But honestly that was about what I expected.
Could this be the end of the style shops or sellers? Once you can download a preview of the style, you can match it...
What is the goal of such a tool? If the end goal is to make everything super easy to achieve in 1 click, then what's left for us ? (This is a broader debate on ethics of IA, not only photography) For me, IA is acceptable as a tool for non-creative tasks like detouring a subject. Not color grading +Thanks for the video!!
You remind me of vinny santorini from Atlantis
Best “you look like” reference I’ve received so far
Love the Channel Love the videos... you have so much valuable info and I really appreciate you sharing. It has helped give me more confidence as a professional. That being said I am also here for conversation and further understanding of other peoples points of view, I am really curious why you think people shouldn't get paid for things like presets? I know personally it took my years to learn the nuances of grading my images and have come up with with some really cool presets my self... all which took a ton of time and knowledge. So again I am honestly super curious why you think people shouldn't get paid for time put into creating unique looks and grades?
Thanks Jason! That’s a great question, that deserves more than a simple comment. In a nutshell, I think the information should be free, not paywalled. Presets are wrongly portrayed as a golden ticket to get the exact result you want, no matter the original image, when the only be-all answer, is editing every image uniquely.
@@sergiopstudio Ahh now I can totally get that... So you feel if a preset was marketed as a base and came with a how to edit and apply to quicken your work flow. Then maybe? I personally have never purchased presets but find huge value/enjoyment in making my own. Thank you for the reply =)
I use both, but if the capture one had as good AI tools and denoise as a LR i would love to forget about LR
You said everything that needed to be said. I always said to the people crying about getting copied from other photographers "If your style is only defined in post-production, maybe that's the issue"
this person gets it
I feel bad that it's so hard to make a living as a photographer these days. And this isn't a "they deserve it for being dumb" statement at all. My take here is that folks who sell presets being upset by this existing are justified. HOWEVER, it also was an inevitability. Any time folks are allowed to make money via a large company's product, be it C1 or Adobe, they are at risk of having their income source either outright taken away (rare) or more typically eroded slowly over time. These companies want to squeeze every last penny out of not only the consumers but any revenue opportunities they may have missed (such as stock images made by ai trained on your creative work, this, etc) and they're going to expend massive money and effort to claw those dollars away from the folks making presets. I would bet some actual money that Adobe has an even scummier version in the pipelines, if they didn't already then when they saw C1 release this they probably got right on it.
I did tests where i took a shot someone else took at the same time i did. Same subject, same lighting, same time/location, similar framing. Just a different camera/lens and different person edited it (edited only in capture one). I found that match look clearly tried to do something, just wasn't what we wanted. I did a black and white conversion of one of my shots, exported it, and used it as the reference and tried match look on the raw (color) file. Match look got close, but it wanted to do all kinds of tweaks it didn't need. There's 100 different ways to get to the end, like you said, but i find it interesting how the tool just isn't what i expected. If all it really needed to do was check the black and white box, but it wants to play with every other slider too, i can't really tell what its trying to actually 'match' in its algorithms.
After testing it lays down a decent base for most things but really struggles with more complex tonal looks. I didn't think it really unlocks any secrets that aren't already easy to figure out. The real use case though is that it can work better than copying and pasting styles across your own set especially in natural light when things are shifting around constantly. I used to copy paste adjustments and then go back and manually adjust each to the main but now this tool has almost eliminated that entirely.
thanks for chiming in Chris!
