debunking popular photography advice

When I started my science undergrad, they told us what we learned in year 1 would be obsolete by the time we graduate. In this video, I question the advice I was given as a beginner photographer, and update these common sayings for modern times. Thanks for watching! @sergiopstudio (find me on Instagram!)

Colour Grading is now on EASY MODE

You're not alone. It takes time. 5 years ago, I moved to a new market where nobody knew my name, nobody cared what I could do, and seemingly nobody was allowed to be in the same room together (cough cough). The business was struggling, but the passion was thriving. I kept obsessing to a point of delusion, not really knowing if what I was doing was even working, but now I finally understand what...

is there logic in love?
@sergiopstudio yes?
Video comes up as I'm trying to buy into the fujifilm system as cheaply as possible for a walkaround everyday carry. I tried doing an enthusiast compact and i didn't love it. Now i see the dials on fujifilm and I want in. I think I'm ready.
Imma about to buy a new lens... Always a tricky maneuver on my budget, but it's that time, I've got my sights on what I need vs want! Wish me luck.
Clients aren't paying you to photograph, they are paying for your vision .
The video needed by those who would have bought the new piece of gear but needed to hear this to justify their purchase.
some confirmation bias for the ether
If money was no object I would own every camera ever made lol
share the address to your museum when it opens up
Awaiting Lumix’s announcement on Feb 25th about the successor to the S1R. I’m patiently waiting so I can decide which direction I go in. Stay with lumix or go back to Nikon. I’m making a shift into wildlife and nature photography and film making and while anxious to purchase gear, also secretly dreading the moment.
that split between filmmaking and wildlife have such polar requirements in terms of camera specs, I wouldn't know what to recommend.
The main issue I have is that I can't decide between Fujifilm X-S20 vs. Panasonic Lumix S5 ii. It's ridiculous because S5 ii in general is such a good value, considering that it is a full-frame camera. Assuming that I go with Sigma zoom lens, the price difference between the two is $1000 or less. Do I just cash out some more and just go with the full frame, or do I save some cash at first, but settle with APSC camera that might be a bit less value in the end...? It's such a difficult decision to make. All I have at the moment is Canon T3i with old Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens, both of which are getting really old, especially when it comes to video features. It is definitely due for an upgrade.
I can only speak to my own neuroses, but if you know you will always yearn for the FF, just go with it and save yourself the headache. However, the end-result of your photos will identical, that extra $1000 is just for peace of mind. *sidenote, that was the very first dslr I purchased myself back in 2012!
Sometimes you just need to get the tools for the job. I rent sometimes but generally for a backup -- a major decision factor to own for me was to have the time to learn and set up the camera how I like and retain all the muscle memory, plus one less thing to do (or go wrong) on event days. As for expensive gear, I only really need the tools for the job, but there's absolutely a stigma where you feel you need "proper" "pro" gear or you won't be taken seriously, especially when starting out. The end results should be how work is judged. Funny story on that -- I've done a lot of my early work on a6600/a6700 APSC cameras (still use them all the time), and I'm quite proud of the results. I've had other photographers be initially impressed and asked what I used to get those photos, and when I tell them it's all "ohhh why don't you use full-frame?? It'd look so much better like mine!". Well, you liked the work two seconds ago... Even funnier is when I use the A7RV in Super35mm APSC mode with an ASPC lens and get told that they love "that full-frame look" 😂
having the time to set up your camera, pre-lighting, blocking, or any level of pre-production always ends up being beneficial to the end product. Thanks for sharing! ✌️
A good RUclips recommendation (they know I’ve been searching for a new camera haha)! Love your down to earth approach m8, your comments about hobbyist vs professional stood out to me. To answer your question, I tend to decide on gear if it will complement another piece of gear for example, I got a RX1Rii which I love but can’t use when the weather isn’t ideal which is why my current next camera research has its top priority weather sealing. But the thing I’ve learned the most about buying gear for over a year is that there’s no rush and that once I make a decision, I let it sink in for a week or two and see how I feel. Also writing down important information (pros and cons) for each item I research has helped me immensely.
that's a good method, I like that! Thanks for sharing Loic ✌️
"8.25 to 8.5 inches" 🤣Anyways, I recently got into flash photography cuz of you. Still learning. For the longest time I didn't know flash photography. I would always tell myself that I'm a "natural light" photographer. You mentioned in a previous video that this is just being lazy. Great motivation btw.
I can sound pretty harsh at times hahaha thanks for sticking around! ✌️
Get an M8 or M8.2 instead of M11, unique sensor developed by Kodak and it doesn’t feel as scary to take with you on trips, the shooting experience is basically the same. I sold mine recently but it was my favourite camera to shoot with, I just needed something more practical and didn’t want the Leica to collect dust. (I had an M9-P also but still preferred the M8 overall even with the cropped sensor, turns 35mm lens into 50mm which is my rangefinder preference)
oo thank you. will inspect 👀
I definitely experience the tunnel vision you talked about. I think that's a common trait among photographers. We're all pretty neurotic if we're honest. 😅
only cool kids would understand 😎
Great points Sergio! Been rocking the EOS M50 for years now, but just ordered the R8 - I deffo feel the anticipation is motivation for planning shoots and reaching out to clients. God... Getting 4K autofocus and 10-bit colors is gonna be a blast + Make me feel more confident in taking on jobs🤩
that confidence is huge! enjoy ✌️
I did the same mistake playing with a Leica camera and now I can't stop thinking of owning one 😂 Been eyeing out the SL-2s, since prices have gone down by 40%. I don't need it but I want it
IYKYK
I did!!! AND my God am I happy!!!!! From 250D to R6II? Life changing 🤣🤣🤣 (again, not cos of picture quality, I learnt to take good pics on the 250d before, the pics are still good lol..but cos of the shooting experience). Kept the 250 for potential multi-cam/2nd body shenanigans. Basic collection of 3 lenses. Doubt I'm gonna buy any new ones until I'm actually doing it for money. But I'm enjoying shooting with the heavier body, with all the dials available so that manual is MUCH easier. I LOVE IT! The only purchases I'm eyeing just at a hobby level is more lighting. Just have one speedlight and a SL60 led for now (one softbox). But even there, I can do a LOT with it, gear doesn't matter if you don't have purpose for it. Ok ramble over.. Your vids always inspire!
sounds like plenty to create some really great images. Thanks for sharing ✌️
I want to get the s5 ii for my first own camera and I found a relatively cheap offer (s5 ii + kit lens and the 50mm 1.8 from lumix for 1900€) I can afford it but Im still scared to pull the trigger to start this hobby😅 Please help😂
You will always have more things that you want to buy. Just go with what you can afford and what gets you started. Thanks for sharing! ✌️
I fell you. I love the Leica design on the SL3, but it doesn't matter how much I stretch, it is just not reasonable as a tool choice. It's better for me to have the "extra" money spent on personal projects or not being worried I didn't land some jobs lately. And I do have a GM prime lens kit with the R IV. Quality wise is on par with Leica.
maybe a fun toy one day :)
@@sergiopstudio exactly that! 😁
Woo, another video from Sergio P. Studio❕ 😁📸🤙

ayy thanks for making me a part of your routine ✌️
This is a lackadaisical approach to photography. Of course you'd still get to a final product and yes we do have our various reasons why we photograph but for someone learning and trying to be professional, you ought to know the basics. Speaking more on the the first couple of advices on composition. If you don't know why something was so good, how can you indentify it and make it happen again? I'm not trying to be an hater, this is just my opinion and I hope I'm making sense.
Im not a full time photographer, I’m hobbyist who get sometimes work for hotels and outdoor brands. I’m also a passionate about photo gear. I have a normal job where I can live without worrying about keeping up to the next month. I like that because I have calm mind and I can do what I love without without taking hairs of my head. Who knows, maybe one day I will build my photo career as big to earn as much as I get from my job. Maybe one day it will get me enough money to try work only this way.
this is my first video from you- had to subscribe. i love that you’re pushing against greed and the constant need to buy, buy, buy. i just got my first 35mm camera (used), arrives in a few days. very excited to just have fun and capture life. thank you for putting these thoughts out there!
I dislike the word "cheap"; it has unpleasant connotations. Instead, "frugal" is a better meaning for what is being conveyed. Even better is that you are a good steward of your money, your paycheck, and hence to your customers.
Professional Hobbiest. This is how I have been described. Basicslly. I love doing pictures and sharing them with people. I do some weddings and parties but normally when I am wanting a piece of equipment. I never charge much. I am being pushed to do more professional and charge more. Am I hurting myself doing it the way I am.
I'd say you're in the goldilocks zone. If I didn't need the money from my photography, I'd do it for free and help out all my closest friends in their ventures. This is what we love doing, it's not a get-rich-quick scheme.
Putting money back in is true, but to an extent. I started shooting as a main shooter for a wedding company last summer. Every job, I'd spend about the amount I got on new gear since I was moving to mirrorless. Now that I have the 2.8 zooms and a couple good primes, everything else is profit.
Ooh new gear is not exactly what I meant. If I’m booking a shoot for 5 grand, I’m better off bringing a team of experts with me that all care about their one thing as much as I do photography.
11:30minutes into the video, wait, I need flashes?
welcome to the bright side ⚡️
I’d love to do some lead/follow rollers on track or back mountain road
Have you ever used one of those suction cup rigs or do you prefer a follow car?
Unless you're making art with zero commercial ambitions, including selling your art, and you're confident that's all it will ever be, I think that first point is ridiculous. Being humble, seeking knowledge, and being at the very least aware of what *tends* to work and finding mentors and being open to feedback and criticism and, yes, rules and guidelines, can lead to greater self-discipline, confidence in ability, and instincts down the road. Rules are great things to fall back on when you're scrambling or pressed for time or out of inspiration or tired or nervous, etc etc etc. When something isn't working, rules can help you find patterns and break a bad cycle. Knowing rules can mean the difference between scanning a photography book and *learning* from a photography book -- because knowing rules and principles helps you "read" a photograph and reverse engineer it. It's good to learn fundamentals and basics. It doesn't have to be the *first* thing you learn and can be years into the hobby before you even understand exposure. But learning the advantages of stopping down to F8, etc won't make you any less happier.
Hey Sergio , Are you also using Capture One to Catalog your Images ?
Not sure what you mean. I import everything through c1, and I organize it by date. I’ll leave the capture folder on my laptop until I’m done editing, and then it gets backed up on externals. I usually keep the selects on my computer for a couple years.
@@sergiopstudio Sorry, let me clarify. I've been using Lightroom Classic to catalog my images for my portfolio, etc., but I'm wondering if it's worth switching to Capture One for everything since I already use it for tethering.
Oh then yeah, I use c1 for everything. Slightly different workflow but you get used to it. I find it cleaner and more optimized for tethered shooting.
I came across your videos while doing research. I empathize with your journey in photography. It’s something that has been a staple of my life for 27 years. I have shot professionally but always for someone else. My passions are action photography. Especially Motorsports as I have been in the automotive industry in tandem for most of that time as photography. They are my two passions. I used to work for a private road course in New England and loved it. Unfortunately I had to leave due to health issues. I have been on hiatus since roughly 2019 and now looking to step back into photography. Again. My staple. My story maker. My mistress. I have now taken steps to form my own company at the age of 44 this year. For all the reasons you have stated. Life happens. It gets complicated but then that complication can really help us focus on what’s important. For that family we started and want to show that you can achieve what you want in life other than the standard 9-5. To be self sufficient through hard work done efficiently as often as possible but to understand one simple thing. The secret to life is there are no shortcuts. The sooner you accept that FACT. The more focused you become because it all becomes a learning opportunity with a wide enough perspective to allow the understanding to take place in a meaningful way. So here I am. Shifting my perspective. Looking at what’s around me. I live in a beautiful place in western Maine. Surrounded by mountains, lakes, rivers, forests and fields. Wildlife abounds. Camera in hand. Perspective shift made. Prior experience will be put to use in a novel way. As like many of you, we are dynamic beings capable of amazing things. I grew up in the forests. I am a Maine native with a skillset that goes beyond just what I have shared here today but the unifying factor is the combination of my passions. A shift from cars back to the forest and its inhabitants. I look forward to this new adventure. I’m not sure why I felt the need to share so deeply and openly but you did provide the invitation to do so. I enjoy your style and contribution back to the community.
That was great, Jason! Thank you for sharing. No shortcuts, all passion. ✌️
Great videos. I'm diggin the raw, real feel of your channel. Maybe I'm a bit bias being a Victorian as well lol
Hey I’ll take it! Hahaha welcome ✌️

Really appreciate that perspective. Conventional wisdom has been to always niche down. I just find many genres to be too interesting to pass up.
That’s a fun take! Very true
Thanks for the advice... This is a great video. I think I'm on the verge of taking the next step with your guidance. Butthurt.

Dude, not to beat a dead horse in the comments but- I find so much value from your channel, particularly the way you help us go back to basics and focus on what’s most important with this craft. I almost all but gave up on my passion with shooting and you are rekindling a fire in me I haven’t felt in years. This video and the newest one you posted “debunking popular photography advice” are just what I’ve needed to hear to get excited about all of this again. It makes me feel like how I felt when I first picked up cameras, and I just gotta say I’m super grateful man. Thank you. 🙏🏼 -Storm

Hey Sergio, this is becoming my favourite channel! Good job, keep it up. Feels very real and what you say makes sense, compared to some advice from other "RUclipsrs" that just feels wrong. Applying what you are saying and it's actually working - slow and steady, each week is a step forward!
Love to see it Bjorn! If it works for me, it has to work for someone else. Thanks for sharing ✌️

This is some of the most candid, useful information I’ve heard in a looooooong time, and it came just when I needed it. Dude, props for sharing and being willing to film and upload these thoughts because what may seem simple to you is going to be game changing for a lot of us- it already is. This mindset shift that you just gave me is invaluable, it shines a light on what I’ve been doing wrong and I get it now. Like holy crap man. Subbed. 👏🏼
Thanks for the feedback! It may sound simple to me now, but only because I've ripped my hair out for enough years trying to figure it all out haha

Well, fun story happend with me three days ago, i was taking photos with my friend next to a fastfood, then the guy asked for a photo for some cheap cash, and i can't tell you how happy i felt after making that cash.
