I grew up in Anchorage AK from the 70s. In the late 80s my older cousin had bought 2 old Ford crate engines. I went over to his garage in the Fall of 1986 and saw 2 of these engines. Still in the crates with plastic inside the wood slats with chicken type wrie holding the wood together! All factory packaged. It even had a couple extra loose parts inside the plasric I could manipulate around in there! 2 full crate 427 Tunnel Port engines in real life! The paperwork and all labels were still on the crates! Im a Cheevy guy forever, but these Ford engines definitely garnered respect!

2 things. #1. Yes 1964 cars had 426 hemis. They were punished by nascar, got pissed pulled out 1965. #2. I have a Petty enterprise photo of the 73 dodge charger with a 426 max wedge in it. I called there its for the short track cars. I drag race mopar.... but am a closet fe fan.

In 1974 a neighbor drag raced a 67 fastback 289 with a tri power setup. He was running low 12 sec times with a best of 11.59 There are 337cu in small block fords today turning 10,000 rpm and 9 sec time slips the best sounding motor I ever heard was a race shelby mustang gt350 At idle sounded like it was on nitro LOUD TOO 😂

GT350 got the name from the fact it was 350 feet from the office to garage at Shelby American

It's very interesting how far we have come. In '62, the 221 ci made 145 hp. Excellent for that time. Fifty years later, in 2012, my Chevy (Opel) 110 ci (1.8) made 138 hp, on par with Toyota and other naturally aspirated 1.8 motors. But the V8 still sounds better.

Thanks for the video! If i remember correctly depending on which magazine was doing the testing. Or which manufacture was doing the testing. Or how much said manufacture donated to said magazine. What was allowed for testing varied. As being allowed to run racing fuel, run with “Cheater” slicks, run with no air cleaner, allowed the manufacture to hand pick certain cars for testing, allow the manufacture to put a “Super Tune” on the car before it was tested, etc. etc. And this happened with all the Big Three manufactures. So i have always taken these published results with a grain of salt.

I don't Know Why ? Why the racing community they never mention the 289's they are awesome engines !! I saw 65 Ford Falcon Sprint beating a 69 Plymouth Road Runner with 440 4 speed my friend's car the Falcon had Aluminum intake manifold,750 Holley double pump ,headers,320 Sig Erson cam and 4.11 gears posi traction 4 speed that little car was fast !! One day I ask to a friend of mine Why discontinue those engines ? and he told they were having problems to smog those engines something related with the emissions .... Too bad !

That is not a motor it is an engine, big difference! A motor runs on electricity and an engine runs on some type of fuel like gas or diesel.

I wonder if they had modified the exhaust port similar to the intake ports. I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to make those heads with a tunnel port exhaust.

Thank you for the history lesson on Ford engines I always wanted a cammer and found out the easiest way to get one is to find a 460 block and order the heads, cams, pushrods, intake and exhaust from a company in Georgia don't know if they are still around this was a few years ago

From a 72 year old Ford fan thank you. In the 1980,s i drag raced a 305 CI Boss motor with the 875 CFM Auto light inline carb. First pass went 11.50 on 11.50 national record. Great times we had with that car. Thanks for the update.

Really enjoyed the video!! I recently bought a 1967 Ford LTD 2DR with a 289. I’m trying to figure out what I got! It has an Edelbrock Performance Intake and a Holley 4BR. I just started tearing into it. I originally thought I should swap in a 390 but your vid has me interested in small blocks now! 👍👍

I feel like the Ford Windsor block is and was probably one of the most overlooked small block V8s out there. 289, 302, and 351's are incredible engines that can make pretty good power and are super reliable. And the fact that you can interchange so many parts between so many different model years really is amazing and makes it incredibly versatile and easy to find parts for.

Had a 65 Mustang 2+2 with a 289 4bbl automatic in High School in 1970 with the Pony interior and 5 dial instrument panel. Ran the crap out of it until 71 when my Future ex wife bought it. She had it until 1973 till she sold it. He had it until he rolled and totaled it. The engine held up to all the abuse of stoplight drag racing and full throttle high speed. Never failed but the C4 was rebuilt in 72

I am not a Ford person but my second choice to me the 289 an the 351 w an the 390 were the best Ford motors the 351 c ya needed a lower gear to lug

In 1979 I got a 70 F-100 with a bad engine form my dad. He said fix it and drive it so I bought a wrecked 66 Fairlane with a 289 and three-speed. It had been rear ended but ran good. Pulled 289 and three speed with floor shifter and put in 70 F100. I was off to the races! I was 15 years old and I ran the crap out of that 289. It would float the valves and I would just give it some time to prime the lifters and go again. Never blew up. I passed it to my next brother and he ran it hard. Sold it years later and it finally burnt a valve. It was tough. I'm 60 now and I own a 63 Falcon Sprint with a 289 and C4. It came with a 260/Ford-omatic 2-spd. It is a tough little engine and runs awesome.

Chevys 283 was in my opinion a better reliable engine..But I am a little biased..

ok so ive been watching this video so i have a question i have a friend that has a falcon with a 260 and its said to be 260 hi po. but we have been told thats not true but u seem to have the info that says they do exists so my dea; is i have a stock 260 block crank and heads 2 barrel intake and i want to build a h.p. 260 to put in my 63 falcon so i need the specits on the motor because i have yet to find any info on a hi porformance 260 built in 63 any info would be very help full thanks

I had a 65 Galaxy and a 67 cougar with 289’s in them. One of my favorite engines right up there with the 300 inline 6. One for speed and the other for work.

Best engine I ever owned. Got a '67 Fairlane 500 family sedan a week after my #2 son was born. Took him, two siblings, and wife ALL OVER America in it, as I was in the AF for 22+ years. He drove it off to college in 1984 (he had bumped up while in grade school). Finally turned belly up, as he did not take care of it at his college on the shore of Lake Ontario. Only the GM 4.3 V-6 comes close. The two best engines ever made. (I am expecting similar things from my Godzilla truck)

The 289 was a strong little motor the 271 hp and the 306 hp

I cut my teeth on a 289 that we dropped into a 63 Ranchero and was hooked. That 4" bore and short stroke with an Isky cam did the job and talk about catching RPMs! Nice shirt BTW.

The internal combustion engine's design is full of inherent design flaws that simply cannot be re-engineered out They are not aware that the ICE design is at the end of it's end of it's t stage and that it didn't have much room for continued development from its beginning Most people are not aware that when you look under the hood the majority of the things that you see and the majority of the claimed advances over the decades were actually 'Fixes', 'Patches', 'Bypasses', etc for those many inherent design flaws of the internal combustion engine, The electric motor's design on the other hand has open skies for developmental advancements, the same is true for electrical energy storage Do not let the Petroleum Industry and it's ally the GOP lawmakers pit us against each other in tribal conflicts in an effort to to kill the threat to 'Their' trillions of dollars in profits EVs and Renewable Energy are much better for people in many ways, don't support their greedy efforts

Great video here! Minor correction, While the SOHC hemi was a true hemi head, the Boss 429 wasn't technically. It had a pent roof combustion chamber. That's why it was referred to as a semi hemi.
