Canon C100 mk2 - My Rig
My simple rig for my C100 mk2. With the extra handle handheld shots are much steadier.
With the main side handle removed it fits into my camera bag without removing or adjusting anything else. It's also quick to go from tripod to handheld.

    Hi Charles, thanks for the video. I could not get my head around the need for handles! It just didn't make sense when I used other software that just dropped the transition straight onto the clip without having to adjust the length of the clips. Again, thank you!

      Thanks, glad you liked it. On average I only use about a third of the footage I actually shoot so have plenty of options when it comes to the edit. For this one shooting was spread over three days, but as I only live around four miles from Hanningfield it was easy. Apart from this there are some other non railway videos on my main channel.

      @@cbsothervideos2898 Very nice, c-log or a standard profile? I like the way you keep some background noises in if it helps tell the story, I do this too. I am not sure how many people really appreciate the effort that goes into creating these short films.

      @infinitesky-59 This is shot in C-Log. As I'm now used to grading log footage I don't use anything else. All the sound was recorded at the time of shooting but was added later, and not necessarily over the original shots. This was to cover up the voices of people also walking round. It looks deserted but was far from it.😄

    What a massive faff, can't get this simple action to just work! The manual says to Option (Alt?) + Shift and drag one clip into another to make an overlap so you can add a transition. Doesn't work. In VideoPad this is super easy! 😠

      It's quite normal to trim shots before placing them in the timeline so there is always enough material to add a transition. There is nothing about Resolve that is weird. It is a professional non linear editor. I would suggest you have a look at the comprehensive training materials provided by Blackmagic.

    Still does not work for me (V 19). I can make space as much as I want, it still won't crossfade. DV is great in terms of capabilities, but horrible in terms of intuitivity.

    • @cbsothervideos2898

      This is how transitions work in all NLEs. Try this. Start a new project and just import two clips. Place them on the timeline together. Now for a transition to take place you have to have video for it to come from and go to. You need to create this hidden overlap. Assuming the default length of your transitions is 2 seconds do this. Using the trim tool trim a second or more from the end of the first clip. Do the same with the start of the second clip. Now drag the second clip so it snaps to the end of the first clip. You can now apply that transition to the join. I take it you are new to editing and Resolve. Have a look at the free comprehensive training materials from Blackmagic. Beautiful made! I have question though, will you be able to shoot more dynamic “action” type of videos with C100? Would the modern dj osmo stabilizers suitable for this camera? And could you name the lenses you’ve used for this footage?

      @cbsothervideos2898 Год назад

      Thank you very much for the comment. This was inspired by the music, and the fact that I am only 5 miles from Hanningfield. Only one lens was used, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS STM. The C100 mk2 is a very capable camera even in 2023. I normally make railway videos. If you switch to my other channel, UK Heritage Railways, the 4 most recent videos were shot with the C100 mk2. I would point out that I shoot in C-Log onto an Atomos Ninja2 in Avid DNxHD 185X, and edit, color grade, and upscale to UHD in DaVinci Resolve Studio. The internal recording to MP4 on the C100 is extremely good as well.

      Although this camera looks more balanced with an EF 16-35mm F4 L on the end, those later EF-S lenses are often even better performers and enable Auto Iris which can be useful panning through changing light. I have both the EF-S 18-55mm IS and the EF-S 55-250mm IS and they are both perfectly good lenses on this camera. I was originally going to buy a 70-200mm F4 IS but the much cheaper and longer EF-S lens never ceases to amaze me.

    Thanks for the footage - I'm part of the C100 M2 cult (can't justify the cost to upgrade to 4K just yet). I like shooting Wide DR over Clog. Much easier to expose accurately and a lot easier to grade right out of camera. Not as harsh and contrasty as the EOS setting - a nice compromise. I personally have found the 4.2.2 on an external recorder is not worth the hassle for the very marginal improvement in quality. Much smaller files internally too.

    • @cbsothervideos2898
      @cbsothervideos2898 2 года назад

      When I had my G40 I always shot in Wide DR, but with the C100 i now prefer C-Log. It just seems to give me a bit more control. I usually shoot ProRes 422 on the Atomos as it's a bit kinder to the CPU when editing on my aging PC.🙂

      @Sutterjack 2 года назад

      @@cbsothervideos2898 I appreciate your tips and experience. I keep talking to as many members of the C100 cult that I can to see how I can pull more quality - shooting and in post - out of this venerable HD camera. I just wish Canon had allowed external 4K recording - my guess is that they didn't want to cannibalize the sales of their high-end cine cameras. Try as I might I have to concede you just don't get the detail and dynamic range out of this camera compared to the newer 4K cameras no matter what you do. I've always said I'd rather focus on the strengths of this camera rather than it's limitations, but it is showing it age for sure.

    Interesting but I'm still left scratching my head that a cross dissolve that cannot be applied (via Speed Editor) in the cut page (because of handle length) can be done all day long on the edit page. I think what you're saying is that the ripple dissolve can't happen between the butted clips in the cut page but it can in the edit page. In which case, an easier rule of thumb is to say 'if you're using a speed editor, just do your transitions in the edit page'.

    • @cbsothervideos2898
      @cbsothervideos2898 2 года назад

      Sorry for the delay in replying. You are correct about the difference between the Edit and Cut pages. It was not always like this though. Adding a Dissolve in the Edit page automatically adds handles and ripples the timeline accordingly. It only does this for Dissolves, not any other transitions which still require handles. The Cut page still needs handles for the Dissolve function to work.
