Blacksmith math: Brazeal style hot cut explanation of layout

Theres no forging in this video, just math and explanation, but if you would like to see a how-to on this tool leave me some comments and I'll make one in the next few weeks. The actual math for the 1" round to square conversion is 0.785 but its not that crucial, a quick multiplication by .75 is c...

      3/8 plate pedestal with 3/8 bottom and 3/4 top, and full of sand. The base is aroun 250 lbs and the anvil is 300 so it’s a nice solid package. I think there are some good pics way back in my Instagram , monkeywrenchforge , so you can see it better. If you have any other questions ask away.

    • @johnmcgee2693
      @johnmcgee2693 6 лет назад

      Volume of cylindrical materials vs the same size in square or use . 79 so 1 inch square material 1 inch long could be forged round/cylindrical and your length would be close to 1.21 inches. Likewise if you take 1 inch of 1 inch diameter cylindrical material and upset forged it into 1 inch square, your new length would be close to .79 inch long. Hope this helps, John

    How do you like your Nimba anvil? How does it compare to a german Peddinghaus? (rigid)

    • @johnmcgee2693
      @johnmcgee2693 6 лет назад

      Great anvils, i think nimba has less rebound but i dont find rebound that important. Hot metal doesn’t bounce, so i look for toughness which the nimba has alot of. Plus, it comes with very crisp edges so you can dress the edges to your style and taste, most old anvils seem to have a worn or heavy rounded edge but maybe not where tou would want it. If mine got atolen i would call Jim Garrett and get another Nimba. Let me know if you have any other questions, John

    • @johnmcgee2693
      @johnmcgee2693 7 лет назад

      I have no complaints, it has good edges nice rebound, but there are harder anvils out there. I wouldn't give this to a student prone to miss the work piece because they are very expensive, I would give them my Trenton, a harder anvil that isn't perfect. But the over all design is great and it has held up very nice over the last three years, if it got stolen, I would buy another.

      very true, my tools often get used in classes and demos by first timers so I just prefer to have most of them in a soft state in the case of a miss and a hammer hitting the bladed tool. Now several I use around the shop by only myself are definitely hardened and heat treated. Hope you like my vids, I'm going to start some others after the first of the year. Im a welding teacher at a college and this semester has been too busy to film video.
