Rebuilding a Land Rover Discovery 2 V8 Engine! | Part 5

Was told not to check the cam bearings on this 4.6L v8 Discovery 2 engine because It always results in a full rebuild. I also replaced the oil pump and various other parts off-camera. Sit back relax and enjoy the sound of rain and neighborhood sounds ...

    I bought a pretty much restored 2001 disco 2 with a knocking engine. the previous owner had repainted the whole thing with rhinoliner in land rover green and the land rover white top. He said that he had just done the head gaskets and all but couldnt diagnose what was wrong with it. he then gave up on it because he said he was no mechanic. that was perfect for me because i am no body guy, but i definitely am a mechanic used to doing big jobs. I took it on and had life happen as it drove along decently. eventually i moved into a rental with a garage and finally got around to swapping the engine with a known good one. Just last week, i got it to run and i am just sorting two small codes. It has come a long way and i've just been enjoying my time driving it around. Now, i need to register it, change the wheels and tires and ill deal with the codes and power steering box leak along the way. we gotta keep the classics alive! cheers from texas!

    The slight west you’re seeing on the new bearings just be from measuring. Nothing worse than paying a shop to do something and having to go over the work yourself. I feel that’s become the norm these days. It’s forced me to do more and more myself even though I’m pressed for time always. Side note: I hope you’re not running that 20w-50 in the Disco

    • @GoodPeopleMotors
      @GoodPeopleMotors 2 месяца назад

      @@sarahdell4042 it has definitely become the norm I learned though doing this. The same happened with the headliner, it looks fine but he didn’t do a good job, id like to redo it. No some people suggest 20w 50 all over the Facebook groups but I tried it for 30 seconds before the rebuild and immediately drained it out and went for a spec that matched the measurements I built the engine to and what’s recommended by LR.

    • @sarahdell4042
      @sarahdell4042 2 месяца назад

      @@GoodPeopleMotors I’m not sure why some people recommend it. Must be an older mindset… I’ve owned Discos since the 2 was new and only once ran 20w-50 and it was by accident. The motor is so much louder and less responsive.

    Brown wouldn’t have been my choice but i do like the lighter color roof. Ties the D2 to its earlier Land Rover siblings. A lot of Discos are rusting away. The saddest thing is a one in good mechanical condition with a rotted frame (I saw one recently). Nice to see someone restoring these.

    Very cool! I've been eyeing Nomad wheels for my Discovery. What sizes did you go with for the wheel and for the tire? Can you tell me more about the adapter? Is this required for Discos? or was it for your preferred offset/spacing?

    • @GoodPeopleMotors
      @GoodPeopleMotors 4 месяца назад

      @@RajJesudason-e7d i went with 17” 5x130 +50et thus the adapters as nomad doesn’t offer a 5x120 in 17”. You could go with 18” 5x120 and they’ll bolt right up but that wasn’t enough tire for me. In summary 17” 5x130 +50 offset with 265/70/17 tires. Then 30mm adapters to make them fit is my setup

    Slapdash work, you got royally screwed..... and with how fragile these engines are, they need to be done right. That block needs to be fully stripped down, properly cleaned, and inspected , especially for liner shift / leakage around the liners. This is how these become endless money pits, one cheap band aid repair after another, instead of a total teardown and ACTUAL rebuild....

    • @GoodPeopleMotors
      @GoodPeopleMotors 8 месяцев назад

      Yup, it’s going to a new shop finally found a guy who knows these engines and cares about his customer. He’s checking everything, crank, rods, pistons, liners, heads, the whole works. Engine should return clean and ready for assembly. Stoked about it!

    I bought my slightly used 2001 D2 18 years ago when it had 50k miles on it. Over the years did head gaskets, air bags, three amigos, blah, blah blah...never actually broke down or stranded me, always got me home and now as I cross the 200k mile line my plan is to do a complete overhaul and install the Turner top-hat liners that I bought a couple of years ago. Bottom line - I'm never going to let my Disco go but let's keep it a secret because I'll buy them for $1200 all day long.
