Hi what year is your static ?..it looks wonderful.
❤
50mm would be better insulated?
Hi, awesome project, do you reckon you could still transport the caravan with all the cladding on? or does it make it too heavy? you get any sagging from the edge of the chassis?
That is so cool
Love ❤️
It just looks so much better..Now looks like a cabin instead of a mobile. What type of cladding boards did you use...Size..length..make. how much did you order? I want black windows & a double door put in. Thanks for sharing this 🙌
Yeah it looks way better. I used 4.8m x 20mm x 150mm rough cut treated sawmill sarking board, used for garden trims etc. All cut in half to 2.4m. Very cheap as I have a sawmill I use regularly for this type of stuff. By the way I'm in the process of creating a complete CAD model of the caravan including a full cutting list of all materials (windows, battons, insulation, cladding, guttering, flashings n more), plans, floor plan, engineering drawings for various things (windows / flashings), new quotes and the cheapest/best place to buy the big stuff, wall detail explaining best order to fit everything. The video will have a detailed explanation of all this and then the full document will be available as a sort of guide to follow thats available to purchase in pdf format inc. 3D PDF of the model. I think for around £10-15, would this be something you would purchase? It will be EXTREMELY detailed and should tell you everything you you need to know how completely seal and insulate the outside 😀 . Just gauging interest of you could reply 😀
Thinking of doing something like that on my own. I have a actually consider replacing the aluminum with OSB first. Would it be worth it to improve the ventilation by eliminating the aluminum? Or is it just too much hassle and not much gain
Seems to much hassle for the gain, also risk leaks even thinking about modifying these things. You should have a tyvek paper layer on the insulation then a small gap between that and the cladding. I'm going do a new video on this soon explaining all this and how I could have done it better. There will be a complete CAD model of the caravan including full plans quotes and all sorts of useful info that can be purchased in a pdf format for £10-15. Would this be of interest to you?
Have you got a rough costing for all this please? Am considering doing mine in similar style 👍
Great watch. Very well done. The end result is amazing. ❤❤❤ Jim.
Thanks for the feedback Jim 😀
Absolutely gorgeous job. Thank you for sharing this x
Inspired 😁
Hi mate would there be any possible changes you would upload a picture of the finished product outside and your thought on how well it had done for you thanks look an amazing job 👍🏻
Hi Daniel, I plan to do a final video on the caravan at some point but its a bit tricky as I don't live it in now but instead beside it. I have some cool pics of a pizza oven and table I designed/built that I took outside it as marketing pics, shows the caravan of as well, there's a patio outside it now to which is really cool.
Don't know if I can actually upload a pic in the comments, I'll try on my laptop though if not you'll need to wait until the video is up 😁
@@MrYobo666 thank you for replying, that would be class, all being well am going to start mine in the next month or so when the weather here picks up a bit, did you see a saving on heat inside the mobile with the extra insulation? Am planing on framing with 4x2 and 100mm insulation but just wonder would it be a bit of an over kill if thinner insulation was grand?
@@MrYobo666 I look forward to it 👍🏻
Sorry for bothering u. The cladding. Is it basically lengths of timber 4 by 1 and if so what's sealing the timbers together to stop water getting behind the timbers
Yes its sawmill cut and treated sarking boards is the proper name, although they are 150mm x 20mm. They are just overlapped on top of each other by about 12.5mm each side so you get 100mm spacing. There's no sealant on them. There is actually a few gaps where water can get in but it doesn't seem to be an issue.
Awesome job
nice job.
Your running commentary on what you were doing, materials to use etc was just too much to handle
Bast cladding job Ive seen on YT
Thanks very much, it's appreciated 😀
Great work, well done. Respect on the vinyl floor , i always make a pigs ear of that lol.
I like the use of ply for the walls, what thickness is it and how is it holding up .
Hi Kelvin, the ply is absolutely fine, had no issues with it.
@@MrYobo666 cool thank you, what thickness did you use ? I've had some changes to life and I'm setting up in a static on the family farm so trying get as much info as possible as to renovation and improvements.
Cool, yeah it's 4mm ply I used. Are you cladding the outside or fitting now windows ?
@@MrYobo666 ive not got the van yet just trying to sort everything out first. I will probably clad and insulate the outside.
Cool, I done a few videos on Windows cladding etc. Got drawings for flashings that will allow you to put thicker insulation/battons on outside. Leave an air gap as well.
Thats a nice cozy atmosphere there , well done.
2 questions buddy... 1> do you think a tyvek house wrap would be worth it to fot after the insulation and before the cladding? The batons that are fixed to the outside shell of the static, are the fixed only to the metal shell or unto the studwork inside?
Hi sorry the late reply, yes a tyvek layer is advisable I should of done this actually. The batons go into the joists not just aluminium, they are a nightmare to find and I just answered someone else (also 2 year old comment 🙄) on how to find them. By the way I have a new video coming out soon explaining all this with a full set of plans / cad model etc. Available to purchase 😀
Hey . Did you just insulate the walls ? Or did you do roof and floor insulation also ? Just trying to figure out the best way of insulating without losing any internal height etc ..?
Hi Fintan, I didn't do the roof no. I did walls only but then also did the under neath, I didn't do actual insulation glued under to the floor but instead used insulated box profile sheeting that I cut in half to around 500mm and then boxed off underneath, this is critical (not in videos, as it was a year later). Makes the place so much warmer. Your options for the roof, are really just do a new roof like box profile sheet straight over with beams etc. Or fit ply lined insulation board inside the roof, but you'll loose 25mm or so.
Bellissima
Can I ask how you found the wall joists for fixing the batons to ?
Hi sorry for the late reply, just saw this, yes you right to ask as its quite tricky, I would push the outer aluminium until I found roughly where the joist was then I would, use bottom of my fist/hand to sort of hammer the aluminium around the joist until i could see either side of the joist intended in the aluminium, I'd then mark the centre with a sharpie, also need to tilt your head to see the dents in the sunlight. It's quite tricky but you get good at it after a while.
perfect
Heating Improvement Interesting. I saw one where they went to all the trouble of cladding and insulating but did not seem to understand you will be freezing cold how ever much cladding you put on if you do not change the windows - which you did so I think you did the main thing. For what its worth, I did pretty much the same job but underneath and this was a help. It is much more fiddly to do but it works. Only tip is you MUST do it right. If you leave any gaps you will soon have mice (or worse) nibbling at your floor What I wanted to ask was ..... how much? I mean is there a special place to get those windows at a good price? Otherwise surely it is cheaper to scrap it and get a nice double glazed centrally heated one?
Charlie, thanks for the reply, after the first winter (not filmed) I clad around the underneath and yes it made a huge difference, like having under floor heating compared to what I was used to. Yes I went to GAP (General All Purpose Plastics) they have many outlets across the country and we're the cheapest. I paid £1200 for all the windows n doors which was reasonable. They are house spec 70mm as well. Cost me around £6-7k all in, could have got one done but I hadn't the money to buy at once at the start. The shell in the video was only £800 to buy so went for it and then did it up over a year or so. Which worked well for me. By the time I'd actually finished it tho I did look back and wonder if it could have been done cheaper / easier / quicker 😀
love this skill and talent
How much did it cost? Please
Cost around £6-7k
Hoping to do our bathroom but im completely new to all this and have nowhere to start do you think youd be able to help me??
Start by isolating water supply and electricity to the bathroom if your living in it. Then just rip every thing out, next important thing is size of tray, my bathroom is around 1050mm wide so I got a 1000mm x 700mm tray, you need to keep a 50mm or so cavity for pipework to come thru floor behind wetwall. Also you'll get a deep tray at Wolseley, quite hard to find deep ones these days as everyone like these slimline trays, not advisable in a caravan. Also go for a bi-fold door to save space, myn is 700mm which leaves a corner in the shower for soap basket, it would be cheaper and less work to just go with a 1000mm door. If you get to this point I'm sure you'll be fine. Have a think how your going to do it before you start and get the stuff you need first be best. Good luck 😀....
@@MrYobo666 im really scared to do it becauseive never done any plumbing. Im worried about the back splash too. Thank you for the advice! It desperately needs doing its an awful yellow plastic
Brilliant I’m halfway doing mine, although I must admit with the weather being so nice I’m barely getting anything done 😭
what do you call this style of cladding?
The wood it's self is just sawmill treated larch boards, 19mm thick by 150mm wide. In terms of actual style not 100% of the name, probably vertical lapped
Hi there! I've watched all your videos on the Caravan upcycle - great job! How has it been over 2 years later? I noted the comments about leaving the gap against the caravan with the cladding to prevent rotting but do you have any more tips and has the insulation worked? Very serious about doing something similar so any pointers are greatly appreciated. Cheers, Damian
Yeah it good, really warm once the bottom boxed off, cladding seems okay it pretty dry on outside as always dryed from the wind etc. Bit of damp in our room but this really far from the stove and had a bad leak in the corner recent so hoping a paint and won't come back. Biggest thing I can help you with is flashings to seal cladding and drainage. Can you PM me on here or find me on FB, I'll send you a treasure trove of Info. Or might do a video covering all this stuff....
@@MrYobo666Right on pal. Flashing, guttering and roof are on my list anyway and boxing off the bottom seems perfect sense to stop that wind blowing up underneath. Got loads more questions and have tried to PM you on here and can't find C20 YOB on FB....maybe I'm being a dousch! Keen for all that wealth of info! Yeah go for it, make sure you leave a gap between insulation and cladding, I never did this n it would be better really, and use damp sheeting to.

Hi looks great, how do you fix the batterns to the aluminium and how would I know where to fix them to my caravan without stripping my inside walls? Thanks
So the battons are screwed straight thru the aluminium into the wood behind, the best way I find is to hit the aluminium with your hand till you find the wood behind and then I actually hit the aluminium quite a bit, it then dents over the internal batton and I then mark it with a sharpy marker pen, do this top middle bottom.
How did you attach the porch to the caravan?
Hi there, the porch was built as a frame and just wood screwed thru 4x2s into the caravan existing walls, making sure the screws hit the existing internal frame behind the tin (which is quite hard as the old frame work is only 20mm wide). There silicon behind the wood as well. Hardest thing to seal is the roof, it just has a square gutter under the existing gutter and foam with loads of sealant etc, not ideal. The back side is done using flashings and creates a better seal, you should check out another video I did on gutter sealing etc.
Have you finished it all now.. Would love to have a full guided tour. I think it looks amazing. We'll done.. Love it.
It's 95% Archie and I was gonna just finish the porch and then a tour for next video, it's a been while now and the last little bit is proving difficult as I now live in it😂. Rest assured tho your request will be met, I'll be doing a complete time lapse start to finish and it will finish up with a tour😀
Can't waite. Had my mind set on doing one myself for a few years now. Looking at doing something In North Wales..
Cool yeah go for it, couple thing to note, from other comments is tape up insulation and probably leave a gap between insulation and cladding ..
What paint did you use on walls and dis you prime them
Zinsser Cover Stain primer. Really good oil based n only need one coat then did 2 coats dulux Satinwood
Sometimes though, I wonder why the shower trays in some static caravan models have a plug and overflow like baths do; they're a bit pointless in my opinion, but it's nice to see a static caravan get completely refurbished structurally though; I like seeing these videos....
You sure do use clamps, but no tape for painting?! I couldn't watch..🙈🙈🙈
Your exterior chimney pipe, is that powder coated?
Believe it is yes, it's still stainless but just coated black for aesthetics.
He never taped or sealed between the foam boards so that would bring the isulation factor down by quite a bit. Ive heard even 30% so for that little bit extra work could have better gains
Your absolutely right, I would have done it differently if I was doing it again. And tape is one thing I would add.
Hi Aftab, I expect the tape would apply to a building that is airtight but with the insulation boards fixed externally, there is always going to be cold bridging issues since the insulation boards will undoubtedly have air movement below and above (not just side to side, as per the boards meeting against the timber stud work). I expect that the insulation boards will definately have a positive effect against the cold. I doubt the tape would hold up against external conditions either. Maybe expanding foam would be a better option. @C20 - I'm about to stud, insulate and clad ours now!
Fantastic
Did you screw the battening into exesting battening or use self tapper screws into the metal cladding
Existing battons Jake, they're only 20mm wide and a nightmare to hit centrally every time. I developed a method by denting the tin outside around the batton underneath with my hand / fist then marking the batton centrally using a sharpy, then line your outer batton up with it. Best way, also don't bother with a level or marking line straight down as the internal batton are often all over the place.
Hi there dose it matter if the chasis is rusted or as l am getting 10ft wide but chasis is very rusty and flakeing
My chasis is also rusty and flaky but it is solid. Flaky paint / surface rust can be fixed quite easily HOWEVER, If it's corroded and weakened it could give you all sorts of problems, only way to sort is get under and weld it which realistically could quite easily write off the caravan as it's a nightmare to do. Could maybe bolt new steel on but again nightmare. Be wary off this, get your screwdriver out and start jabbing the rust, should have steel behind it. Especially if your going to do what I did and pile weight on and or move it in the future, things to consider....
@@MrYobo666 it is not surface rust it is falling apart in places and wheel looks like its going to fall off the guy l am buying it from said he will fix it before it comes as he sells them for a living but l am doughtful.
Is it way warmer
Yeah its pretty good yeah, although I expecting it to be better, still not near a house. If the roof was done it would make a big difference, also still got to box off the underneath, before winter which should help to...
