      @@QualityGardener yeah I’m just an idiot busting on u because u have a really cool accent. If u want to experiment add Biochar and humic acid to fill the holes in ur heavy clay. I have sticky clay soil as we live in a large river floodplain. Since I’ve been drilling holes and using Biochar and humic acid to push into the soul profile over the years my compaction has all but disappeared. Also adding gypsum helps clay form a colloidal but I fear adding too much gypsum because of getting some micronutrients locked up. I’ve seen the biggest improvement using Biochar with straight up fulvic acid. The area has become incredibly improved and the turf in that area seems to handle the summer heat stress far better than other areas. Check out Kelp4less in the US. I believe they ship internationally. One of the best and cheapest sources of some incredible organic products. Finally I’ve been top dressing some other areas with locally sourced quality worm castings. Definitely seeing improvement there and it’s actually attracting worms to the area to do the aeration for me 😆

    Is it best to air layer a fig tree that has two trunks like the one you have? I just got my first fig tree ever… Italian Red Sicilian and it’s pretty tall, about 5-6 feet. I’m afraid to air layer it and kill it.

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener Месяц назад

      Absolutely! Actually if you've seen my pruning video for figs in containers, I always recommend to make your tree a single trunk first, so it would yes it would be a great air layer potential, and Red Sicilian is an amazing fig from what I've seen :)! Just note that the larger branches take more time to root, and in return they give you a very high success rate because of larger wood having more energy. So with that being said, I wouldn't do this in fall, especially in a colder climate. I try to do my air layers as the fig tree has woken up in early spring when the tree has a lot more growth hormone. That will give you the best success rate. Hope this helps and thank you for watching :)!

    How about other growers using a mixture instead of composted pine bark they use vermicompost that has a lot of nutrients, will it change the amount of added fertilizers? Thanks💚

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener Месяц назад

      You can definitely customize this mix and change it around! But with Vermicompost because is very rich in nutrients and also expensive in bulk amounts, I would not use it primarily as a growing medium. Vermicompost / Worm castings have been shown to be the most effective when used in a mix at around 10-20% of the entire volume, and that's how I use mine when I include it in seed raising, and veggie growing mixes. You can always experiment though and note that not all worm castings / vermicast are equal. They are just very expensive to buy here where I am, and I find composted pine bark / similar products to be a lot cheaper to use as a bulk growing medium with much better drainage properties. Thank you for watching! :)

      @@msprettyeve I actually use this mix for blueberries too, they absolutely love it because its an acidic base. I just don't use limestone for blueberries as they prefer more acidic soil. I would stay away from etsy if you are buying internationally because its quite risky. I don't know too much about figs in other countries other than America and Australia as that's where I've gained a majority of my information with figs. I would make an account on ourfigs website as they can tell you what figs would do best in your zone. @QualityGardener Месяц назад

      Hi Thank you for watching and your comment! Unfortunately the product I used in this video is not available through Amazon. It's only available here in Australia, regardless it's called Plantneeds 'Fish N Bone'. I'll add some products in the video description shortly. In America, Blood Meal and Bone Meal are sold as separate entities. So you do indeed have to mix them together to form a proper Nitrogen and Phosphorus blend like how I have in the video. 16-14-0 Is a generous NP level (you'd need another product for K as the video shows). 27% Calcium is a great level. I personally think you could skip out on the Dolomite indeed. The main uses for Dolomite are the Magnesium levels, and PH buffing as figs prefer a Mediterranean rocky soil (limestone based). It's not something you always have to use like the fertilizers but I've included it once or twice just to get the pH in the pot set.

      @@QualityGardener I think I arrived at a fair amount in grams for my products..took me hrs to conclude and convert from 10kg to 100m2! or cups per meter squared...all of those measurements seem crazy to me..I hate that, plus we have to figure out how many square feet of soil in the pot. Diameter, depth etc. Just about broke my brain. I wonder why they dont they put how many grams per gallon of container soil, sure would make it easier. So, looks like I need 1/4 cup each of Gaia green Blood meal , Organic M.M Basics Bone meal, and Acti-Sol Chicken manure pellets (all sold on Amazon) and one cup of Nurturing Nature Organic Worm castings for a 12 gallon pot. I will also water in the 1 tbsp of Alaska Fish emulsion per gallon of water and 1 tsp Gaia green soluble seaweed extract per gallon of water and the extract will give me a 0-0-17 NPK, so that takes care of the K. Yeh! In total , the NPK will be 16-14-17. Pretty good. Thanks for the recipe, I wish I knew about this years ago. Just makes sense.Ive used the fish and seaweed and bone meal here and there but didnt actually combine them at the same time for a 3 month feed...also used to use blood meal here and there but havnt in a few years. @@mssavedin92Wow that is incredible! 16-14-17 will massive growth on figs, i think you will be shocked! That's a lot of work to do , but it will be worth it, and you'll know everything is organic. I really think you've got the best ingredients here for organic use, it doesn't get better than that. I should mention during the time I made this video I didn't have nowhere the collection I have now (Near 100 Potted Trees with a large majority being figs). I think the method in this video works great for around 10-20 trees potted trees but anything more than that I would consider some different fertilizing methods. I'm now using a lighter version of the aforementioned method in the video which consists of Blood Meal, Bone Meal (A Blended product that I buy here) with the Chicken pellets as a one time hit at the start of the season, which I combine with the use a CRF product (Control Release Fertilizer) which isn't organic but lasts for 5-6 months. Just food for thought. CRF is not organic. Thanks for sharing your plans its been a pleasure reading your work. I wish you all the best!

    Thanks for the video. Question: going forward, starting with the 3rd pruning, do you continue to maintain the same heiight of the the 3 main branches, removing the new growth from the previous season? In other words, those 3 branches remain roughly at 40 centimeters and whatever smaller, fruiting branches that grew the previous season are removed?

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener Месяц назад

      Great question. I think this video needs an update, as it did not cover that however you are correct. The 40cm scaffolds, (the 3 branches) should remain in tact pretty much forever until you rejuvenation prune (another video I need to make). Just to reaffirm, The 3 scaffolds should not be touched, only the fruiting wood that comes off. Rejuvenation pruning is an action to perform after the tree is say many many years older to restart its entire life (basically to the basic 40cm stick form) which will then begin the scaffold formation cycle. This is mostly relevant to potted figs all though I've seen it been performed on inground tress. Until then, yes you are correct. You maintain the 3 scaffolds, and you just prune the fruiting wood that comes off it every year to a very low height of say 10-30cm as I mentioned here in a previous comment. (With this approach, this stage of pruning is repeated every year unless you'd like to rejuvenate prune.) To reaffirm, once the tree reaches this stage, its pruned like this forever, and then your tree develops / starts to look like one of those typical Japanese ancient looking trees! which ironically this guide is based off). Pruning at this stage, (The one you are asking about) can very greatly as with each advancement of the fig form, the rules become much more open minded or free if I'm to say. The best advice I can give after this, is that it depends on the pot size. The smaller the pot, the more fruiting wood I would take off the scaffolds (3 branches in this video) Hope this helps and thank you for watching and your comment :)!

    I recently received a tree with 3 developed stems, but I want to train it into a tree form. Could I air layer two of those branches and remove them, so it focuses everything I to the main stem? I know the general advice is never more than 33% of the mass in a single pruning...

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener Месяц назад

      Thank you for watching and commenting! Yes you can absolutely do that, and it's how I recommend fig trees to be pruned in another one of my videos. A disclaimer to know is that air layering into fall is very risky, and its something I would recommend only in early spring / summer as the tree is in a state of growing. Depending where you live, in a colder climate I would wait to do this the following spring / summer. If you are in a warmer climate then its possible to do however the success rate is still lower. Thankfully the 33% rule doesn't apply to figs as they are different to most standard fruit trees in pruning. They respond very well to hard pruning. It will indeed set the tree slightly in tree form but not too much and you will still get fruit the upcoming season. Hope this helps! :)

      Potting soil in my opinion is a bad term to describe container growing mediums. I prefer the name potting mix as it better describes the use of what goes inside a pot. This video is quite old, but i did use composted pine bark. That's sold as 'potting mix' here in Australia. Because this video is on youtube I tend to generalise the term for the viewer. If you research a potting mix products label you should be able to find something like what I used in the video otherwise you might end up buying peat moss with perlite in a bag. Hope this helps! :) Thanks for watching!

    I have had the 103 pair for a few months now. These are great secateurs. Well made and very sharp. Amazing steel. One thing I have noticed is my hand creeps forward and I need to be wary of nipping the inside of my thumb and finger in the pivot joint but that's just my grip. These are well priced too. Like all quality tools, having made the investment, look after them. I clean them well after every use and keep them well oiled. Love Japanese made tools. Simple and effective. I have a pair of Tobisho SR1s on their way from Japan now. Should be here in a few days.

    Sir i done air layering in disposible Plastic Jar . i mean it head is open to air So what if my soil dry's out should i water it or should i cover it

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 4 месяца назад

      Hi there! Thank you for your comment :) If the top of the jar is exposed to air and the soil is dry, I would water it immediately. If the soil is moist, and the head is open, I would water it and cover it. I would suggest making a tiny hole at the bottom, which would allow for too much water to drain. Even if its a small hole, it will help with too much water. You can always cover the hole with tape. All the best! :)

      @@QualityGardener So you mean i should cover its head from Air? and keep it moist

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 4 месяца назад

      @@AnonymousKhan-ju8ok Yes make sure the plastic container has no air exposed. You only want a tiny opening for watering like the pods I use in the video. The air will make it dry out and postpone root formation. I would suggest using tape at the top, and leaving a tiny gap for water to go in. Then you can leave another hole at bottom and water it if it gets dry. Very small holes / gaps will be fine. The pods I use have a small gap a the top and small one at bottom and the roots formed well. All the best with your air layer my friend :)

    so you would only get fruit in your 3rd year? what about fruitlets in the 2nd year? can you let them grow then prune back?

    • @QualityGardener
      @QualityGardener 4 месяца назад

      Hi there! Main crop fruit comes / forms on new growth, therefore you get fruit every season when the tree puts out new growth. First year trees typically will not produce much fruit or none at all. Some varieties can do it earlier than others. From my experience, fruit usually starts to form well on 2nd year trees, and if not by then then the 3rd year it should produce a decent amount. Breba crop will form on wood from previous years and I have had some, just nowhere near as much. Desert king is an example of a good breba producer. I'm not much of a breba enthusiast though, my main focus is main crop. Hope this helps! :)

    after all the videos I've watched about pruning these guys...this was/is by far the one that actually taught me.I have a desert king..4 yrs now..I never pruned it till this past February. It was pretty tall and is now the size and shape of the bush style fig tree you showed us here. Its got 3 nice thick trunks or lower branches, not sure what they actually are hahah!...Anyhow, when the new branches form from the buds below that 40 cm cut, and they grow and grow....how short do we cut those to..when the next pruning happens?Thankyou so much for this..I get it.

      @QualityGardener 4 месяца назад

      Thank you very much! ☺ I'm glad you've enjoyed it. Fig trees transform soo quickly its hard to say what's what at times LOL. I know what you mean though, on my 2nd year pruned fig tree that had 3 scaffolds formed, the new branches that formed right under, which fruited, will be cut back to around 10-30cm. You'll want to leave about 4-8 nodes that the new branches will come off again the following year. And then that cycle is pretty much repeated forever. The more you prune, the more you'll get back in new wood. Its up to you how compact you want the tree to be, and if or not you'd like to up pot the fig to further advance the spacing of the fruiting branches because the pot size is realistically what dictates how much CM you should take off.

      @mssavedin92 4 месяца назад

      @@QualityGardener Thankyou. When I pruned the tree in February for the 1st time, I took alot off!! I also root pruned plus I up-potted the tree into a 15 gallon container. I believe that will do it well for a few years. So it looks like this tree is an open bush form now...and has several buds formed under the scaffold cuts I did in Feb. So, this 4 year old tree (that I blindly over pruned ) is basically back into a 2nd year growth phase.Hmm, this is what happens when we listen to people who dont know how to teach very well so that we understand. I wish I saw yours last year...pre Feb 2024! So the new growth from this year will be pruned to 30-45 cm. And then next year..the new growth under those cuts will be pruned to 10-30 cm leaving 4-8 nodes on each branch. And then keep repeating. Thankyou!!!!
