    Good video, I'm from east Bay but out of Cali since 1991, used to ride my motorcycle through crocket & port costa back in 1984 when I was 18 & young & free, It always relaxed me driving through this area, thanks for the video & I learned a few things I never knew, plan on living out in California 6 months a year at retirement in a few years, I'll definitely take a walk around crocket, my brother used to work at the C&H plant, hopefully the C&H sign is still lit up at nite? Anyways, thanks for the cool video

    After the USS Forrestal Fire, the summer of '66, all personnel going to the fleet got two weeks of Damage Control and Fire Control training. Damage Control was its own rate (job). But the first explosions took out many trained personnel and the forward fire main system. The untrained crew did what they could but, their lack of knowledge was harmful. AFFF Light water (foam) was laid down and the crew washed the protective foam away. The school was in Norfolk, VA., and has been shifted to Great Lakes, Ill.. It's given in boot, I think. It's now classified. Great Lakes has; boot camp. Then it has 'main side' (technical) and 'hospital side' (medical). The DC (Damage Controlman) was merged with HT (Hull Technician) but I don't know the date such happened. RUclips has the USN 15 minute training film 'Learn or Burn' and two documentaries on that fire. 9 major holes in the flight deck and burning fuel pouring through the holes. John McCain was not the cause. The cause was another pilot in a different aircraft not following procedures.

      @@GeorgeLittle-uu4jq Wow, thank you for all your knowledge and great stories.

    • @GeorgeLittle-uu4jq
      @GeorgeLittle-uu4jq 11 дней назад

      @@Bayareaandbeyond777 You're more than welcome. Glad it was of use. I should have stated the technical schools and the hospital schools were all main side; although each had its own area with enlisted clubs. Boot camp was across a road. If you wash the protective foam away then fire can spread to that area. I believe 400 crew members died. Other ships came along side and were spraying water to douse the flight deck fires and pick up people who had to jump into the water (from 90 feet) to escape the fires. Weapons modules were not to be plugged into the aircraft until it was at the catapult (safety). A pilot wanted to save a few seconds and plugged the weapons modules into the aircraft. So, the engines were started via an external cart. Then the pilot flipped the aircraft power from external to internal. It generated a voltage spike which jumped to the weapons cable. The voltage spike set off a Zuni rocket which traveled across the flight deck and hit other ordinance loaded aircraft fully loaded with jet fuel. They also had ammo stacked around the area (got careless). They also had fired off so much ammo (bombs, missiles) that bombs from WWII were sent to the ship. That stuff wasn't as well protected in a fire than the modern stuff. So, the Captain wanted that stuff off his ship as fast as possible. The untrained crew had to read the instructions before they could use the OBA's (oxygen breathing apparatus). The oxygen canister was in a asbestos lined cavity assembly worn on the chest. It gave you 1 hour of oxygen. You set a mechanical timer to 45 minutes. That gives you 15 minutes to get to the open air. The canisters heat to 600F., and they get dumped into a 30 gallon metal trash can filled with fresh water. If there's *any* grease in it the whole thing will explode right next to you. Slam in a fresh canister and go back in. Even with a Navy regulation beard you cannot get a tight seal on the face mask. You'll get some smoke infiltration. And in a smoke filled compartment you can't see a thing other than the flames. So you'd be working via touch. Beards were eliminated about 1980. The threat environment had gotten even deadlier. Which is why the training changed so dramatically and is now classified. I think it was the USS Fitzgerald which had a ship collide into a berthing compartment. Killed, I believe, 10. Pictures were taken and I've read they've incorporated that into the Damage Control Training.
