1950s Australian Railway Shunters Lamp Restoration
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.6 месяцев назад
I was given this lamp many years ago from my grandfather, way back in the 1980s, I thought it was time to restore it to its glory, it has a tri color light system, for signaling trains, it uses a 6volt battery to luminate the light, so yes its electric, it was used by NSW TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT, from the 1950s to the 1970s. I really hope you enjoy my video :) Any feedback is very welcome.

I found this old lamp at a garage sale for $1 the lamp itself was in very good condition, made some time around 1940 by Colton, Palmer & Preston Ltd ( Australia ) I will try my best to restore it, the green color paint isn't original, but I like it, some metal parts have been Nickle coated. Hope you like my work, please let me know what you want to see next :)

It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
That is a TON of logic for being such a "relatively" simple thing. What a wonderful world of computing we exist in from every day computers. (although this could've been said in the 70's with a keyboard, but not the internet). I'm glad we have modern computers to interact with each other. But then again in the XP era I could've left this same comment on a 2005 video from a "modern" OS. Computing hurts my brain. I miss windows 7 ok? lol
6:18 that's such a cursed segment of the video. I know the capacitors are long drained and it's totally safe, but if feels so wrong.
How did the floppy , hard drive , power supply or even any thing else work with out being serviced
whats the point.. i have more computing power in my watch than this old relic... How would anyone ever use this in any meaniful way these days?
Can it play new albums?? I've always wondered how a new one would sound. If it'd sound good or still sound like an old one
yes sure i have a few mint 78s that i can play, they do sound good
It looks like it's new again and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Good day. Great video. Let me know iffor sale
@@mikeben3787 This went to its new owner about 5 months ago
Great job. I like when enough imperfections are left, that it appears that it's simply been in storage for a while. Some restorations go a bit too far and in turn make the objects almost modern.
Yes certain parts and identification are removed on many other restoration videos.
Simple as it gets 👌🏼
Pretty cool. I like old gramophones and this turned out very nice.
Thanks so much glad you liked it
Fantastic restoration! it looks like new again. 😀👍 I don't know about this particular model, but there might be Dip switches on one of the boards, and one of them sets the Echo to on, and then as you type, it should show up on the screen.. there should be documentation somewhere on the internet, that tells if this model has that feature, and which dip switch to flip to on for Echoing , as well as how to set the Parity and speed, should you come across the accompanying DEC Computer in your travels maybe a PDP -11?
thanks you
My high school had these. Digital Equipment Corp was more known for their non-PC computers. The alpha and other larger business oriented computers.
How much uv is in the sunlight in your area for you to be able to retrobright in the sunlight?
@anubhavraj9483 we have very hot sun here in Australia even in the winter, I'm not sure have much UV
we can soak those parts in water??
sure but not while plugged in.
Why do you wash electronic components? Aren't you afraid of oxidation?
nope not at all.
Και τώρα χωράνε στοιχούφτα μας καμιά πενηνταριά απο δάφτα
Ahhh, the memories... I remember in the late 80s inheriting the PDP 11 computer system from the high school, getting a transported to the downstairs room of my parents house, the electrician getting wiring working, and spending two summers doing nothing but trying to get lunar lander on an 8-inch floppy to work properly... I did not see the Sun for at least two summers, only the soft fluorescent glow of the green phosphor...
what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...except space heaters...they just kill you
WHAT !!! WOW What a great video. You did an Amazing job on this. Very surprised the hard drive worked.
Glad you liked it!
Hello friend, do you know how I can activate the mode? IV METAL?
hmm no sorry.
I suggest not to clean keycaps in a peroxide bath, depending on the material they're made of, they can bleach. You should use an ultrasonic cleaner with a water/baking soda solution.
can you buy me one :)
Wow... you're attacking that PC like it offended your mother or something... Nice job on the resto though.
New subscriber. Glad to see more vintage computers get a new life. I bought myself a ItDusters Compu Cleaner to remove water and help dry the boards. Works so good. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! The logic part seems to be very archaic.
It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!! I need that as cold as my feet get even in the summer time I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you very much :)
really good job
New follower, a tip for subtitle is, textamig, think it can help you grow on youtube, im from Sweden
🤨 ~ if it has a thermostat, the electrical connections, elements are properly insulated and the metal parts are earthed = then it is quite safe - in comparison to your “click-bated” title 😠
one has to get views and grow, otherwise whats the point of filming.
Swesome! You can probably put a clixon or something like that (or a reostate) in serie after the old thermostate if You want to adjust the temperature.
Imagine what a dead short would do to someone.
yes deadly haha, actually its very scary lol
Something does'nt matter 😂

when you wash electronic things,DON'T USE WATER!!!!!!! USE ALCOHOL!!!!! because with WATER,the electronics won't work. 🤬
actually its fine, i have done the same process for many years.

@@vintagematter yup. 1979 - 1992
1982 i was using the TRS80 at school.
Good job cleaning up that chassis! Looking sweet. That Celeron processor is *slow* you can easily get a much faster P4 CPU on ebay. Also, another thing about that era PC is it's right in the prime of the Capacitor plague. I wouldn't trust it until I went in and tested all of them. There are places you can find lists of the brands effected by it at the time, but it's pretty far reaching. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
I'm not sure how worried I'd be about that! While it's "retro cool" and all that it's just one step above a door stop at this point.
One assumes that the original would have glowed red. Down to the high resistant wire details?
Microprocessor Zilog Z80?
How did all that "Vintage Matter" get inside the computer? What even is it?
You're washing the motherboard in water
Just saw this video, man I've always wanted one of these, had an old 286 like it but never found a 386 or higher. If you want to part with it let me know.
already been passed on, but will keep my eyes open for another
@@vintagematter thanks.
what panel should be placed above the back panel? i just found out that old tower cases provided this 7:57. i am surprised that the pcie panel is made that high, apparently there is space above the back panel for it
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Que haces querido amigo delegado. Mira donde te veo comentar.
I really enjoy your restoration videos! There are others on RUclips, but yours always stand out. I seem to learn something new from your approaches each time. Although when it comes to removing rust from PC cases, I’ve never felt right using the store-bought products and have always preferred using the old school sanding (i.e. rotary tools etc).that rust removal product you used seemed to worked well though :)
Yes its very good for small rust
Back in the day we used to refer to these as "dumb terminals".
yeap, i remember seeing so many being dumped :(
Only 3 ram slots...? Never seen that before!
3 ram slots used to be a thing with those older computers. There was no dual channel on most of them yet so all sticks ran in singlechannel anyway. If you would put 3 ram sticks in a modern board today it will work but in singlechannel mode just like these did
Awesome restoration! The Celeron processor made my heart hurt a little bit though. 🤣 A Pentium 3 upgrade would be a nice touch. Great video!
Pentium 3 cpu but where to find
I was going to say the same, i wish this one an older PC and not a Celeron!
@@vintagematter it's a Socket 478 motherboard, so you need a pentium 4. should work with any Socket 478 P4 CPU, might need a different bios. check the The Retro Web project website for details
You can test your VT if you connect pin 2 and 3 together of the serial connector. If it's possible don't wash electronics boards with water. It's better if you can wash with isopropylic alcool. For a test type all H's to realing the CRT.😊
i used to wash motherboards on the assembly line back in the 90s, with plain tap water and soap.
i wish we could get win 95 back in u.s.a northeast..
