I feel exactly like you about the remake, although I was excited about seeing it; I was not expecting to hate it. But the first thing I thought viewing the movie was; "Yup. They definitely modernized it; they took out all of the bright color." But really enjoyed the movie regardless, and I did get used to it and I agree that it fits the film. And brown and other muted earth tones were definitely big in the 70's(and 80's too).

Ahh, you may have forgot, the original Suspira was a ballet school as the new Suspira was a dance school. A bit of a difference.

Deciding between the two films is difficult because it forces one to ask himself, "Just what sort of pretentious film snob do I want to be? Do I want to be the traditionalist for whom 1970's Italy was the golden age (or, at worst, the silver age), or do I want to be the kind that likes 'elevated horror' and has a passion for A24 that borders on inappropriate? Tough choice." I would have to choose the original simply because of the rewatchability. The new version, while arguably as long as it needs to be, is too long to be watched when the mood takes one; rather, one must make a deliberate choice to sit down for three hours to watch it to look for thematic elements. In contrast, because the original is less about the plot than how it is presented, it is easier to just put into the machine and enjoy.

I've long loved the original SUSPIRIA, so, like you, I was totally skeptical of the remake. But, after reading some reviews that emphasized its very different approach, I decided to watch it and it ended up being one of the real positive cinematic surprises of the last ten years for me. It may not end up being as much of a classic of the genre as the original, but the reimagining is a pretty terrific film in its own right. I largely agree with you about what makes it interesting and good, both in terms of themes and performances. The one aspect of the new version that I don't like is the ritual climax of the film. I just think it looks awful, especially when compared to the rest of the film which seems so aesthetically surefooted. I saw the film again last year and enjoyed that scene even less. For purely aesthetic reasons, it really takes me out of the film. To me it looks cheap and fake, lacking any real sense of horror, despite the horrific things it depicts. But the rest of the film is strong enough that I kind of forgive it for that scene. And, of course, the film concludes with a lovely -- and effective -- coda. One other note about the 2018 version: a podcast I heard after watching it argued that it drew on Fassbinder (which seemed right to me, as I know some Fassbinder films) and on Andrzej Żuławski's POSSESSION, a film that I had never heard of before, much less seen. That led me to seek out POSSESSION, which at the time was nearly impossible to see...though shortly after that, it became much more readily available both in streaming and physical media. And when I saw POSSESSION, it immediately became one of my all-time favorite horror films. Just an extraordinary movie. (And, yes, Berlin in the 2018 SUSPIRIA looks, in many ways, like the actual Cold War Berlin in which POSSESSION was filmed.) So, in a way, I also have the new SUSPIRIA to thank for introducing me to a wonderful, classic film.

I saw the original many years ago, but didn't really remember most of the plot. TCM played the movie a few months ago and decided to DVR the movie to refresh my memory. I stopped watching after 20 minutes(?). I found it boring. I just couldn't finish watching the movie. Love your 1960s mod look! It's fantastic!

The remake far exceed my expectations when I first watched it. I'm usually against classic horror remakes, but this new version of Suspiria was very good imo.

Love the original, the remake didn't do nothing for me I didn't like the lead actress Tilda Swinton old man character was soooo boring, nah not for me , the original is a masterpiece 🎥👍🏻

I was looking forward to this video, and you did not disappoint. Your set is a keeper, and you went above and beyond the call of duty to decorate yourself for the occasion. You really said all that needed to be said about these works. You told us the facts and then thoroughly made your case. Back in the 90s I had the chance to see this movie and 4 flies on Grey Velvet at the Art Institute of Chicago with a Q & A with Dario Argento. After the presentation several other people and I went out for drinks with Dairo Argento. It was a wonderful evening.

Tilda Swinton is a very underrated actress ! Love her bold film choices throughout her career. Always memorable.

Great video. I guess I need to watch the remake again, like you I love the orginal so much and I was expecting a sort of Gus Van Van Sant Psycho remake. Must admit that the first time I tried to watch it I gave up after about 20 minutes and watched the original again. You made so many interesting points, that I really feel like I should go back and watch the remake again, this time with a more open mind.

Thank you for your exploration into the two Suspiria films, I love the first and really enjoyed the 2018 one for it’s desire to expand the story, not just remake the first. I really like The mother of Tears (I watch it every few years), it could have been ranked along masterpieces that Suspiria and Inferno are, but the budget or something was just not there; It is what it is. Thankful Argento gave us Dark Glasses, if it’s his final film, he will go out with a respectable film as his finale.

Fantastic review -- great work.. I'm going to have to finally give Carnival of Souls a go after seeing this. I'd toss Eraserhead on here even though it's not full on horror like the rest of the list, because it can be traumatizing in wonderful & longlasting ways.

On a side note, may I state, it-don't-make-no-sense, for a woman to be that sexy and "fine." (Your makeup is absolutely flawless.)

It's good to see a young person who knows, comments and actually makes videos, about the pioneer, black and white horror film history.

I, personally, am obsessed with black and white horror films. This list is just so good, I agree with your picks. I love the weirdness of Carnival of Souls, the atmosphere of Night of the Living Dead, and the suspense of Psycho. Also love the imagery and vibe of Cabinet of Dr. Calagari.

You really should watch The Haunting from 1963. A fantastic B&W horror directed by Robert Wise, sandwiched between his Oscar winning musicals - West Side Story & Sound of Music!

Favourite b/w horror is Dead of Night (1945). It's also the best anthology film I've seen. Favourite b/w is my all time number one film The Last Laugh (1924) which is also horrific in a when life gives you lemons sort of way.

I believe Carnival of Souls influenced Jordan Peele's "Us" as well.

Night of the Living Dead played in drve-ins in a double feature with the British kiddie feature, Doctor Who and the Daleks. That's how I saw them decades ago.

Honestly I’ve always loved Night of the Living Dead so much. Part of it is Romero being kind of a hometown guy for me (I’m from Pittsburgh) but also ironically I think part of my love for it stems for my dislike of many things within the zombie genre in general. Being the kind of godfather of zombie movies, Night of the Living Dead doesn’t really deal in the tropes and common plot points that I think cheapened the genre, in particular in the early 2010s. I hate The Walking Dead if you can’t tell (love Zombieland though).
