Reef Maniacs
Южно-Африканская Республика
Добавлен 11 фев 2014
Reef Maniacs is a channel dedicated to the setting up and running of marine aquariums. Let me introduce Reef Maniacs and the owner myself Brian Chamier. I have been involved in marine aquariums for many year. My first aquarium I set up was in 1985 with the help of my father who introduced me to the hobby. My goal with this channel is to help other get started and help those that are already involved buy passing on what I have learned over the years and still learning every day. My father said to me when you think you know everything about something is when you walk away from it. Keep an open mind and always be ready to learn.

In this episode I take you through the Bryopsis cure: My battle with bryopsis using Fluconazole. I take you through the steps I took in the Bryopisi battle and show you day buy day how the Fluconazole took care on the over grown Bryopsis and works for most algae control. I was quiet amazed how well it worked at first I must admit I had my doubts. Like the the article in Reef2Reef www.reef2reef....

How To Frag Torch Coral and Gluing Frags to Plugs
If I want to do this for freshwater with black rocks (basalt) for a fountain, will using black sand work or is the chemical composition of aragonite important? I’d prefer to use black sand since it will blend in better, but if the science needs to be aragonite, I’ll use that! :)
Can I mix with tap water? Or really have to use RO water to mix?
for me the basement its to much, better is make it with tje smalest standing point posible
How do they get along I wanna put 5 in a 250 gallon and its hard to find info on groups in aquariums
Sorry for the late response. Yeah tangs are a touch and go subject. with those 3 they went in at the same time this is one of the better option but not always the easiest. You can try the 3 day total black out method I have heard a good few success stories with that one. Good luck if you have not done it yet if you have hope you were successful.
Thanks for the comunicate. Sorry so much.
Just got a stripey. She’s 4inches. Hopefully she eats all the aptasia
Se puede usar en acuarios de agua dulce?si no?
Very helpful 🙏
If it’s 20 degrees outside can I put my rock or Substrate out there for a few days?
I fed him spaghetti! :D
Wouldn't it be better having a bigger pipe so it syphons it straight into a bucket rather than back and forwards with a small tube. Especially when doing a water change?
Just found with a smaller tube you can do alot more as the thicker the tube the less time you have to work. But it is now discovered that popping the bubble does not release spores into the water column like previously believed.
@@ReefManiacs Who has proven that? I took all my rock out and scrubbed it and a month later it was back with a vengeance! I used a metal brush so I dont get it what happened! I will try this method but what do you think of using a product? I have heard Vibrant but I have also read bad reviews about it killing fish and corals. Its been a while since I researched it but I know a lot of retailers dont sell it anymore because it isnt bacteria like they claimed. Brightwell claims that razor and clean work and some here said continuum! I just started doing this method and think I iwll get another crab after it seems all gone. If that dosent work then one of the products!
I bet you could make coral bases with this
I wish y’all would be more enthusiastic about trading invasives that look just as exotic like ta’apes and rois. Gonna need bigger tanks 😂.
People need to bite the bullet and stop paying these insane prices. Hold off on getting a yellow tang, it's a $40.00 fish! Why would you ever pay $200 or more? Customers who are buying these are the cause of the problem! Stop buying and it will force the suppliers to lower their prices.
I'm starting treatment this evening.. I'm hopeful, only heard good things about it, if it wasn't so DAMN expensive.. 😅
Good luck remember to remove skimmer cup any GFO or carbon and turn all UV off.
@@ReefManiacs Hey thanks Mate! one question i have now that i finished the Video, what Dosage and how long, did you use after the initial treatment? And did it work and last? 🤔
@@joebarracuda6038 it was 5.5mg per 1lt of tank water. I ran for 8 weeks. With skimmer cup and UV off. Only did it once and that system is still Bryopsis clear today.
@@ReefManiacsMy Update, it worked perfectly thank God, because i did a little more Dosage and it was pretty expensive. But everything is gone.. !👍 Now i got back with fighting againgst the red slime or cyano algae, i also had before 😂 Any Tips for that.. 🤔
That's is good to hear. As for the cyano there are a few things that can cause that. 2 common cause; 1 over dosing amino. 2 RO filters need changing.
I have not seen anything coming out of Hawaii, so is it lifted or are they just thinking about it again.
Its was lifted at the time of this video, but the ruling was appealed and they won that appeal.
Do you have a battery backup system or generator to keep flow and heaters on for the tanks?
Hi Dylan. No I dont not for load shedding but I do have gene for longer outages.
👍❤👍
I have a stripey now it’s small and aloof waiting for it to grow a bit bigger. It’s just day 2 no sign of eating aips
Sorry for the late reply. Yeah mine was small when I first got it, about 2.5 to 3cm at about 4 to 5cm it started eating them. Hiw your progress?
No its not as far as I know
At the time or this video yes the ban was lifted which was appealed, shortly after that they won their appeal closing it again.
Take the win Brian , plus you have it on video too.
Hahaha all the way to the bank🤣😂🤣😂
Morning Brian
Can lionfish and filefish be kept together?
Anything that is small enough to fit in a lionfish mouth should not be kept with them.
Lol did that bicolour angel ever stop spinning
Yes he did. Was about 3 hours into acclamation. He is doing well and eating.
Hi Brian, if it's not a bother, could you tell me where you buy the fish since I want to sell fish and I asked many people and no one told me, your help would be very helpful, thanks in advance
Send me a email. brian@reefmaniacs.co.za
I’m yasser I visited you todaY
Was good to meet you.
Hello brian
Hello Brian, I would like to know what lamps you use
Hi Jeremi, in the fish holding banks I am using the zetlight mspace marine and for my coral bank 2x zetlight qmaven II 6600 and my display tank 1x zetlight qmaven II 6800.
😊Very nice variety of fish, nice to see a new unboxing Brian
Yes it's been far too long.
Sorry Brian and Family ❤❤❤❤🥹😭😭😭😭
Thank you
Hi! May I ask where did you buy 2 boxes of medicine?
Hi. From my local pharmacy.
Can i have the name of that. Maybe my pharmacy i have.
@@DuyNguyen-tm4fh fluconazole
you might need a prescription from your Dr.
😢😢
😭😭😭😭😭😭💔
I now realise why I stab my blade into the box when I'm unpackaging stuff. All the years of working with you! 😂 Great video!
The good old GVM days, good memories.
Hi Brian and Family !! Great video Guys Keep up the good work
I don't understand the theory that popping the bubbles releases spores. If this was true, any fish or invert that eats it would make the problem worse because they would have to pop the algae in order to eat it
The thing is the tank mate that feeds off of it keeps it under control. So it eats it faster then it grows. Remove that tank mate before the problem is completely removed its will grow back ten fold. I had and emerald crab in a systems for 8 months no sign of bubble algae and not even a month later it was coming back.
@@ReefManiacs Im afraid of adding emerald crabs because of the story's I've heard of them eating corals
Yeah that's the reality of any of these critters that eat a certain item is there is always a risk of then eating something else. Rabbit fishand Zebrasome are a 50/50 when its comes to eating bubble algae.
@@ReefManiacs Are you saying you removed crab before it finished? I don understand what you are saying
A much easier method and works 100% is a product called Continuum Clean Equation M. Cleared my tank in 1 month.
any harm to corals?
Perhaps put an air bubblers whiling you were doing that help?
Placing a air stone in the acclimation tub will cause the PH to rise to fast. When shipping fish long distance the co2 build up inside the bag causes to PH to drop. The ammonia levels have also built up while in transit, but what stops the ammonia from killing the fish is the low PH. Ammonia is not dangerous at PH levels lower then 7 but the higher the PH the more toxic the Ammonia. So a slow acclamation with a drip only increasing the drip rate every hour is the safest way to acclimatize the fish as this will slowly and safly raise the PH and lower the ammonia. We used to do the airstone if you watched our perverse videos. This method comes recommended by one of the world's leading fish importer.
Absolutly love Clown Wrasse
Farm raised or wild caught ?
Wild.
Thank you so much for this video. Really helpful
Glad it was helpful!
question... im somewhat new to reefing (3 years) and just recently getting into fraging. why does the bandsaw blade not cut your fingers when you touch it? whats a good beginner bandsaw to get? thanks!
Hi, well it's not a toothed or sharp edged but a diamond edged blade, so it's more of a grinding action then a cutting action. With that said I still would not touch the blade as with enough pressure it will cut you. As for band saws the griphon in my opinion is a good investment but if you are not cutting alot of corals a Dremel style multi tool with a diamond cutting disc works well oh and make sure to get the extension that fits to it so the motor section says away from the water.
@@ReefManiacs awesome! thank you very much!!
We need tiny tiny tiny plugs ..We can't fit that in the holes of liverock..That's why we break the base off when we bring them home.
Yeah they are big plugs but they are good for while they are in the frag system. I have glued those to the rock and when the coral get a few more head you can see the plug.
Brian we need to hear more of that lovely lady's From behind the camera 📸 they added to this Video

Cool video and great snakes bud.
Thank you JP. I really think the reptile bug is back.😁
Please can you do a video explaining how the different ball pythons get their names colours and markings. Thanks for an awesome video
Hi Tammi. Yes we can do a video on genetics.
Very cool!
Thank you. I think the bug is biting.🙈😁
I waited 10 weeks in my display aquarium before putting in new fish and weeks later they still got sick ...
Sorry to hear that. Velvet is a terrible disease and would never wish it on my enemy.
@@ReefManiacs thanks, these things really make us question if we want to keep up with the hobby or jusy let go. Cheers!
@@CherryHaze86but just make sure walking away is what you really want to do.
Sucks to hear. Just went through that myself. Lost every fish (regal, purple tang, hippo and you name it) except a bar goby who never got it. Couldn’t get him out if I tried, which I did. Corals look great! Gonna go fallow (except for the goby that I can’t catch) for 4 months and try again
