I hardly ever have the guts to play horror mods but Siren had its hooks in me since the Alpha Beta Gamer showcase a year ago. Super impressive work and I continue to tell all who will listen to give it a whirl.

@@AndroidFerret I'm not sure if it will achieve full I'm-sim status, but the influences from the genre are heavy.

Have you thought of releasing this as a new game based on GZDoom instead of a mod? Like Selaco did. If there's enough content, I would be okay with paying for it. Could help support all the hard work and maybe future content.
Gotta also think of the people who cant pay though
@@icecreambrainz8726 I'd just like to actually complete the story and have the work out there. I suppose I don't see the benefit to the player. There are ways to support the mod for those that want to. If not, the main goal is for people to play it! I could possibly make it a streamlined process later on - and not actually require Doom2 to run. A commercial release would mean 95% of the sprites and textures would need to be recreated from scratch and I don't have a team to do that.

@@JediCore Actually I agree with this. And there's definitely been some feature creep that ultimately didn't make it in. But this is also a fun process for me to experiment and learn how to do certain things. Development time definitely can't just run indefinitely.
@@ditheredoutput6148 I didn't get a chance to say that this does indeed look amazing and I will definitely be playing it when comes out. I just don't like the mentality of "the longer the better" as we've seen with few games that it did not work. I see that you obviously know a thing or two about development ;)

@@arkgaharandan5881 It seems to be a word of divided opinion. I've only ever heard it pronounced 'Silla'. In this game universe the c is silent .😀

Oh boy, Siren with Selaco gameplay would be something else entirely. Like a true sequel to FEAR almost.
@@mikemjb2017 That's a great idea actually. I was contemplating using the engine and retaining all other aspects of the mod, but having it as more of a Selaco project, with their soldiers etc would be awesome. Something for the future maybe.
@@ditheredoutput6148 I can see Selaco working well as a base, since I feel it shares more built in features with Siren than DOOM does. I also feel like the AI, projectile based bullets, movement system and melee system in Selaco would work well for Siren as DOOM's hitscan style enemies don't feel quite as fun to fight in close quarters. On the other hand, I can also see having to Grab Selaco at a $30+ price point to play Siren being a turn off for people, not to mention the fact that Doom is ultimately the modding platform most people will still want to use. Cant go wrong either way, just finished the current version of Siren and all I want is more regardless!
How does working in the Selaco engine fork of Ultimate Doom Builder, along with any additional tools it includes, differ from using the standard Ultimate Doom Builder and the tools commonly used for GZDoom development?
@@normietwiceremoved The tools aren't much different. Selaco's Ultimate Doom Builder is pretty much the same with the exception of some scripts available to Selaco specific actors. So mapping isn't much different. Elsewhere, the engine has some changes and is based on an older version of gzdoom, so for me, a lot of things based on newer features don't work and the solice of community becomes irrelevant because of changes to the base engine. But if you spent some time with it, and already have a good understanding of zscript, it could comfortably be a similar experience. To be clear, I'm not making this mod in Selaco's engine or with their tools. I did try it, primarily for their addition of a flashlight that can move/ be updated at a greater rate than 30fps, so it's a lot smoother, but my dependencies require features not present in Selaco.

I've been incredibly impressed with this game for years now. I cannot wait for a full release. Not many games scare me but this one does. Absolutely outstanding work from top to bottom. Hope I can buy it on GOG someday... someday soon.

i love that you put voice acting in the game, it really helps indie games become more immersive.
@@arkgaharandan5881 yeah I think so too. I'm not 100% on this yet. As long as it ends up creating immersion rather than breaking it by being distractingly bad.
It helps that the voice acting is very good so far.

How did you implement headshots? I'm designing a survival horror dungeoncrawler, but I want it to use sprites like Doom. Do you just use a separate small hitbox for the head?
@@John-xg7xdI didn't want to do the spawn hotboxes everywhere thing. I use a simple check on the actor's height. E.g. If you hit the top 20% of the actor it counts as headshot damage. It's fairly generous ATM as the entire hitbox is a cuboid, but a tighter solution could be achieved with pure math.
@@ditheredoutput6148 Interesting. I might consider that approach, but I think I'm gonna go with multiple hitboxes just for the flexibility of different weak points.

I beat demo and loved it, few fixes needed but I know that would be sorted out, is it alright to have a guide to tell where all the secrets are though? I never found the Plasma Gun or Flamethrower
