It’s funny watching this all those years later but l grew up watching the game in England in the 1970s when thuggery was considered part of the game. Every team had someone who specialized in crippling the most talented players in the opposition. Skillful players were ridiculed by managers as ‘Fanny merchants’. No surprise then that the violence on the pitch was echoed in the stands. Horrible, horrible times

As a Chilean I have to say that the Italians before the match declared how horrible Chile was so they started to heat up the mood, people were mad at them and the day of the match Italy CLEARLY just came in to throw kicks and for sure they tried to injury the Chilean star Leonel Sanchez (who ended up being one of the top scorers of the world cup, scoring the insane free kick goal against Lev Yachin). Italians didn't even try to score at all!, after they were losing they kept kicking anything that moved!. Also both Chilean goals were totally legit and well played, the second was an awesome shot also. Anyway, that's how Italy plays until today, but just more dissimulated. Later Chile played against them in France 98 and the referee gave them a penalty because they were losing and ended up 2-2 🧐

Italian press had been quite critical about the country prior to the world cup. Chile wanted to show to the world that they had a white, westernised, organised nation deserving to host the tournament. Reality was quite different.
