Welcome back to the uprawr podcast! This one’s a bit different as jack and joe sit down to talk about how 1k lights came to be and how jack pulled it off. If you’ve ever wondered how much an arena costs or the logistics of getting 1000 musicians to play a song at the same time then we promise you’ll learn something new. Big thankyou to anyone involved in the night and ultimately the event raised over 120k for charity which is staggering!

    Of course they fucking knew. How do you spend that much time working so closely with a fellow band mate, and not get an overwhelming feeling that there's something seriously fucked up going on in his head? Do you seriously believe someone like Lemmy Killmister wouldn't have sniffed out a lowlife creature like that grub within 2 seconds flat?! Don't be fooled... they fucking KNEW!

    I remember seeing Lostprophets with Kill 2 This at the tiny Tunbridge Wells Forum back in the day (2001?). My gf at the time fancied Ian and made me ask him to sign her gig ticket after their high energy set. I approached Ian but was too embarrassed to explain the situation and so I asked if he would sign the ticket for my sister. He seemed a really cool and down to earth guy at the time. What went wrong? Was he always a sick and evil predator? Or did that side of his personality manifest from excess use of hard drugs?

    People love to hate on Bring Me's sound change, but forget that Oli was a middle class millennial growing up - and like other common millennials, our music tastes were shaped by a lot of what was on the radio,. The top 10 songs of any moment of the 2000s was really a mixed bag of different genres. He and the band are real artists, so what they listen to shapes and informs their writing even this far into their career. They truly can write whatever they want now at this point.

    I remember listening to Lostprophets growing up and they were one of my favourite bands around, I also discovered The Blackout a Welsh post hardcore band, as Ian Watkins was featured in their song "It's High Tide Baby!" Even to this day it, it's horrifying that someone I looked up to was a evil monster. I admit I find it hard to really listen to any Lostprophets song now though I wouldn't judge anyone who did I guess some of us really can't seperate the art from artist

    Thanks for the episode, really enlightening to hear the effort involved Soooo , my 2p I was there...bassing #930. I've been in orchestras/ bands since primary school, Im now 50. I managed to convince my drummer to join us, I then found that a friend of a friend had signed up. We met up with her on the day (never met her before) and very quickly started chatting to some folks around us which was ace. New friends gained :) I only saw a post on FB that someone had taken a photo of a poster they'd seen on a door. Ha...right as Im typing Im 50 mins in and this the Poster that you did is the post I saw!!!!! :D I didnt see anything about posters until I hit the site and checked out the FB posts In answer to why I didnt initially apply (and why I think the original reason for most not applying through annecdotal) was the battery powered amp issue. I didnt have a battery powered amp However after signing up I uickly managed to find a soiution (battery pack for my Spark amp....quickly followed by borrowing a portable power station). That meant I could bring my Spark Live to allow 2 bassists to share the amp and be able to stream the songs during warm up so all around could jam along too :) I apologise that we couldn't get further with the amp manufacturer...but well, nothing ventured, nothing gained BTW note for next time. Need to announce to the players to watch the beats on the screen It was amazing!!!!! Looking forward to signing up for next year Good work Jackie boy, glad you got to keep your house :)

    The moment the first song with the floor musicians started, it hit me like a tonne of bricks and it was incredibly powerful. We were sat right behind the sound guys, so got a perfect view of all of the drummers playing perfectly in time and genuinely made me cry multiple times just seeing how much it (the night and the music) meant to everyone on the floor.

    I love their music, but I still feel guilty whenever I want to listen to their songs. But damn, they had such good songs and they were great live, too, it is still so devastating. I remember my mom was waiting with me to meet the band after a festival gig (because I was 14 back then) and I actually got to meet them. I took a photo with Ian and I was the happiest girl alive. Back then it was one of the greatest moments of my life, or so I believed. So dumb.

    Guitarist #685 here! Jack, just wanted to let you know again here how amazing of an event 1000 Lights was. Even hearing in more detail about the behind the scenes, going into how ridiculously stressful it all was to organise still probably doesn't cover just HOW stressful that was. I can only imagine how much focus and will it took to commit to. I wanted to say from myself, and I'm sure I can speak on behalf of a great many of the other musicians on the arena floor that are keeping in touch via Discord, Instagram, Facebook etc, that it was an absolute honour to be a part of this event, that's it's formed a core memory for us all, and if there's ever anything at all I/we can do to help in future, consider us all on standby! What an amazing podcast. Really so interesting to hear about the trials and tribulations you went through to get this all going. Congratulations, and thank you again for the opportunity to be a part of this.

    Lostprophets were my soundtrack to my teens, and they helped open my eyes to Metal as a genre and I literally started to re listen to their album today and it makes me sad how bad Ian did, as a father myself it is sadly a dirty word now. It sucks because they were all such talented artists and were easily one of the cleanest band musically in Britain, rivalling the American metal bands at the time. Side note, there is also an Ian Watkins in the British pop band "Steps" and when the news broke alot of people assumed it was him who was doing these sick crimes

  • @paulrhyslloyd1
    @paulrhyslloyd1 7 дней назад

    Say what you want about Lost Prophets but they were a prominent part of a lot of people musical journeys. There was a club in Newport South Wales called TJs and at one point you were guaranteed that if an alternative band was playing there then LP would be supporting. It got to the point sometimes when people were just going to see them, hell I saw them about ten times there, Marc one of the DJs at the club on a Friday night used to play a lot of their music, was a big supporter of theirs and sold me a copy of fake sounds on CD about a month before it came out. Ian Watkins is an evil scumbag who deserves to suffer but he rest of the guys were always nice to me and I wish them well in whatever they are doing now. It was really interesting hearing about Visible Noise starting up, his was a great interview.

    I'm the type of kat that would have no trouble calling something out for being cheesy, and to a point this is cheesy. But how could such a horrifying person end up as the lead singer? Like, the dude was known to be a happy and good hearted kid growing up. Just don't make no damn sense. The only real trauma I could possibly think of is that his father died when he was young. This really was a good radio friendly type of metal band. Just..... really is a shame what happened with this sick prick, because the sky was the limit for a band that wrote such genuinely good songs. I'll always like this band, but doing so means I have to separate the artist from the art. Even though the rest of the band did nothing sick and deviant.

It might not have been so bad if he hadn't written the vast majority, if not all the lyrics, but he did. He also did all their artwork, tshirt designs and more. He had a hand in more than people think when it came to the band and every step would remind them of him and they don't want to do it any more.

      No alleged about it, he also bottled a girl in Norwich in 2011, but that got buried, whereas the girls face will always be scarred. Oli sykes was a massive prick, rude to support acts, horrific behaviour to girls, often 14/15 year old girls. He somehow got away with cos it was kept quiet and the emo/hardcore scene just ignored it.
