Tackling the tunnels of Tröllaskagi
If you’re planning a road trip around Iceland, you might have heard a few things about single-lane tunnels and bridges.
Don’t worry - they’re perfectly safe and easy to use, so long as you’re prepared!
Here’s what it looks like when you take a trip through one of the single-lane tunnels on the Tröllaskagi peninsula in North Iceland.
Heading away from Akureyri, Route 82 winds its way north past Dalvík towards Ólafsfjörður via a single-lane 3.4-kilometre tunnel called Múlagöng.
The rule here is simple.
If you're travelling north, you must pull in and give priority to southbound traffic.
If you’re travelling south, you have the right of way.

Six Days To Santiago: Walking the Camiño Inglés
Просмотров 15 тыс.2 года назад
This is the story of a week walking the Camiño Inglés from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela in April 2022. It was my third Camino, the shortest and the least populated, as the Camino recovers from two years of Covid and many other unwanted distractions. But just like the other routes I have walked, it taught me many lessons and gave me peace, calmness and serenity, with gorgeous Galician landsc...
The European Odyssey - Sarajevo

Two days in Sarajevo, where East meets West in a melting pot of cultures, and where the scars of a brutal internecine conflict can still be seen around every corner. A sombre stop on my 2019 summer odyssey around Europe, Sarajevo has risen from the ashes of a terrible siege and more than three years of relentless shelling. It’s barely believable that a city could host an Olympics in 1984 and li...

The Divers of Mostar

After a long coach journey from Dubrovnik, which included three separate passport checks, I found myself in Mostar, a place best known for a splendid 16th-century arched bridge built by Suleyman the Magnificent. Destroyed in the bitter civil war of the mid-90s, and beautifully rebuilt now, Stari Most is a symbol of the divide that remains in this community. By some accounts, only tourists pass ...

Moving down the Adriatic coast from Zadar took me to Split, the second-largest city in Croatia. The highlight of this Dalmatian metropolis is Diocletian's Palace, a well-preserved Roman palazzo, with towering colonnades and marbled streets, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a modern-day dream setting for film and TV series such as "Game of Thrones". Split hums with a vibrant nightlife ...
The European Train Odyssey - Zagreb and Zadar, the gateway to the Adriatic

Moving south from Budapest to the Adriatic Coast required a westward diversion to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia for an overnight stay, before catching a coach south and east to Zadar, one of the oldest cities in the region. Zagreb proved to be a stately and attractive place, filled with Austro-Hungarian edifices and Tito-era socialist structures too, while Zadar was an entertaining gateway to ...
The European Train Odyssey - Four Days in Budapest

Arriving by train overnight from Kraków, Budapest offered me four days of Magyar majesty. A bustling metropolis dripping with centuries of history, straddling the wide Danube, Buda and Pest is filled with eclectic, baroque, neo-Gothic and neo-classical edifices, dominated by the medieval Royal Palace on one side and the enormous Parliament on the other. As well as those architectural highlights...

Taking another funky train from Warsaw deeper into the heart of Poland, I’d come to explore the gorgeous city of Kraków (it’s actually pronounced Krak-oof - who knew?) and take in some of its highlights. Wawel Castle was an obvious starting point, high on a hill overlooking the Vistula, but I was foiled by an officious ticket sales clerk who refused to let me in, as she claimed the “castle was ...
The European Train Odyssey - Two Days in Warsaw

The first stage of my European Train Odyssey had brought me to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. I'd chosen Poland as a logical starting point for a clockwise circuit of Europe, with plans to explore Krakow, Budapest, Dubrovnik and Sarajevo - all places that had burned their name into the history books down the ages, and that I felt compelled to see. Starting in Poland meant that there would be so...
The European Train Odyssey - from Waterloo to Warsaw

Back in the old days, when we could travel and go places, I decided to travel around Europe by train for a few weeks, to see places that I had not yet seen, and to have a chat with Europeans before we left Europe, to find out what they thought about things. These are a few snapshots of the first stage of that odyssey, images from a two-day train trip from Waterloo to Warsaw, a journey that I co...

Oh my goodness. Thank you kind sir for posting this video! I was frightened about the one lane tunnel and still did not understand after reading comments. This was incredibly useful!!!
You're welcome! If it helps you with your planning, I've written a series of eBooks for self-driving around Iceland, with lots of tips and advice like this. You can find them on Amazon, under the title Iceland - Route 1 and Beyond.
Muchas gracias John. Wonderful to see Camino Ingles. I am walking it next year and great to know what its like. I have already done Frances and Portuguese. Can't wait to follow the yellow arrows once more. Cheers buen Camino Liam
I know the feeling very well! I've made similar films for those two as well. Take a look and see how close it matches your experience!
Thanks John. Wasn't expecting a reply. Have saved your French and Portuguese videos to watch tonight. @@johnlloyd3279
@@user-yf6qc3mv2m You're welcome! If you'd like to relive the French route in words, I wrote a book about it, too! a.co/d/77LAZHk
Great tutorial. One small addition to travelers judgement: The tunnel predates the common use of long trailers and trucks, so it is advisable to give way to such a large and long vehicle regardless of the direction driven.
Good point, thanks for adding that!
Wonderful video, excellent photography thanks for sharing. Congrats. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 🇲🇽 👋🏼👋🏼
Thank you very much!
Really enjoyed the video. Thankyou Miki Goldie
I enjoyed your video very much. I've done 6 Camino's and I make a video after each one. Your video has inspired me to do the English Way next September. Thank You.
Hello Martin, and thank you for your kind words, I'm delighted to hear my little video has inspired you in some small way. You may have seen I have made a few others. If it helps your planning, I also blogged that journey - daily entries start here. johnelsewhere.blog/2022/04/01/who-do-we-think-we-are/
Thank you. Beautiful.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it, although the Camino deserves all the credit!
Hello…..just found you video. Wonderful, brought back MANY memories…. Walked the Ingles in September 2022. Weather was perfect and NO rain…. Question…did you know the fellow towards the end of the Camino who was wearing the Texas Longhorns cap? I live in that University town. Thanks …Paul
Do you mean at the end of the table, around 16 minutes in? Yes, he's a Dane called JT Pedersen, who now lives in Santiago. We're Facebook friends!
Thanks John…..just watched your lovely video again….! Would you and JT Pederson allow me to join your Facebook group.? Thanks, Paul

Hi John...What a great video. My son-in-law has invited me to join him on the Camino Ingles Spring 2024 and your video has inspired me to say yes (Even though I will be 65 and he is 20 years younger and a lot fitter than me). I think we may follow the same route as you (it looks glorious - just hope we have as good weather as you seem to have had) Any tips from your own experience as this will be my first Camino (Ferrol-Santiago)

Thanks for doing the video. Just come back from another Camino and they are special. I also loved Muxia …it is really very special. Each Camino is different and you always learn …so they get better!
You're right - they all have their own character, and their own cast of characters that walk with you!
@johnlloyd what airport did you fly into to start at Ferrol? and how did you get to Ferrol after that? Enjoyed your video.
Hello! I flew into A Coruña (which meant I saw a large section of the route from the air). Then I took a bus from there to Ferrol the following morning. The bus station at Ferrol is a couple of kilometres from the harbour and the official start point of the Camino route, and you'll be walking back some of the same streets once you begin, but that's fine. I wrote a daily blog that may help you too. Start here! johnelsewhere.blog/2022/04/01/who-do-we-think-we-are/
Wonderful video! Lovely music! Great photography! Thanks for sharing! This is exactly the journey I’m considering from start to finish in 2024. How long did it take to walk? Also, did you walk it from Muxia to Finisterre?
Thanks Susan! It took six days to walk from Ferrol to Santiago. And then I caught a bus to Muxía. Perhaps I might walk from Santiago to Muxía and Finisterre next!
Great walking tour. Thanks for taking me along with you
Takk fyrir!
Beautiful!
Thank you, William. The real credit belongs to the Camino, of course.
Very Satisfying - Time Well Spent. Thank You. Buen Camino
That's very kind of you, John! Time spent on the Camino is always time well spent.
thanks for sharing.... going to do this in 2024 along with Camino do Mar and Finesterra Buen Camino
I’m glad to hear it! You’ll have a great time!
Thanks for that! Ingles will be my third Camino in March.
It was my third too! Enjoy!

Very lovely rendition of your Camino. Loved the cinematography and loved the music selection.

How did you get to Ferrol?
I flew to A Coruña from Gatwick and then caught a bus to Ferrol from there.
Thankyou for saying you were in A Coruña before your walk. (Maternal side of my family is from there and I spent many happy Summers as a child on Playa Riazor with my cousins) I plan to walk the Camino Ingles in 2023 with my daughter after a stop in A Coruña first (2-3 days) to introduce her to our heritage and visit my grandparents grave. It will feel like going home for me even though not been there since 1985! Thankyou for your video of beautiful Galicia.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed watching your video because tge Camino Inglese is on my bucket list and I wanted to know actually how hilly it is and it seems there are quite a few. The reason is to train and be prepared for them before I go!
I’m glad you liked it! Yes, there’s a few hills to tackle, with a long uphill stretch to get to Hospital de Bruma. Preparation will help!
This seems to be a very charming city, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Thanks! I do have lots more films to produce!
Beautiful! The Camino was a life changing event for me.
And for me too! It set me on an entirely different path, one that is more creative and stress-free too.
