CHRISTMAS SPECIAL! | Christmas Eve Service | 3 Dutch Organs
Welcome to my 2024 Christmas broadcast, in which I play several hymns and carols around the Christmas theme. Some of them are known throughout the world, while other are only known here in Holland (see the timestamps below). The three organs used in this video are very different in character, ranging from baroque to symphonic. All organs are Dutch built, however. If you want to know more about the organs, look up sweelinq.com and the organs of Veenendaal, Westzaan and the Augustijnenkerk in Dordrecht. This broadcast was recorded quite spontaneously, so nothing has been prepared and the stop combinations are chosen manually or with the aid of those I have programmed into my organ for hymn ...

Op U mijn Heiland... | Improvisation + HYMN | New Goch Sampleset!
Просмотров 151Месяц назад
In this video, I play the Dutch hymn 'Op U mijn Heiland blijf ik hopen', which is often sung here during advent. I have chosen for this video not to just play the setting of the hymn, but also include a short spontaneous, improvised chorale prelude, in which the full melody is presented on the wonderful Clarinette of this organ. This is by no means perfect, but in my opinion adds a lot to the a...
J.S. BACH | Erbarme Dich | BWV 721 | CC-ORGAN!
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.Месяц назад
Tim van Elderen (16) plays J.S. Bach's famous 'Erbarme Dich' on the Cavaille-Coll organ of St. Hippolyte in Poligny (France) using the Sweelinq software. I have opted to play the C.F. of the melody on the 8' trompette and basson on the Recit, but an octave lower, for extra gravitas. As this recording was the very first time I had done this, this caused some difficulty with crossing hands, but I...
G. Merkel | Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele | Bätz Gorinchem

Tim van Elderen (16) plays an elaborate choral prelude by Gustav Merkel on the tune "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele". This melody is presented on the solo Vox Humana 8' Quintadena 8' of the Bovenwerk (including the tremulant, which fits this stop very well). The accompanyment is played on the wonderfully full flute 8' on the Hoofdwerk. This organ is known for its flute stops and Vox Humana, and I...

Tim van Elderen (16 years old) plays the hymn 'Abide with me, fast falls the eventide' by W.H. Monk. This upload was recorded and uploaded on Rememberance Sunday (10.11.2024) for the international world. Here in the Netherlands, it is two weeks later, so keep in an eye out for the ulpoad then. The text, I find, is very fitting for Rememberance Sunday: Abide with me, fast falls the eventide The ...

00:04 Fantasie Psalm 25 - W.H. Zwart Tim van Elderen (16) plays the famous Fantasie on (Genevan) Psalm 25 by Willem Hendrik Zwart. Play the first few bars in any church here in the Netherlands and some people start humming the rest. The piece is classic 'Hollandse Koraalstijl', a style pioneered by the father of the composer, Jan Zwart. This style is still very standard for improvisations and c...
D.Buxtehude | Passacaglia in D minor BuxWV161 | Bach-Organ DORDRECHT

Tim van Elderen (16) plays Dietrich Buxtehude's Passacaglia in D minor (BuxWV 161) on the 2007 Verschueren Organ in the Grote Kerk in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. This piece is played via the Sweelinq software. The piece is essentially a set of variations on a ground bass, which was (and still is) a common form of organ music in the Baroque era. It is obvious that, although the theme and evoluti...
G. Böhm | Vater Unser im Himmelreich | Hinsz Organ Kampen
Просмотров 2235 месяцев назад
Tim van Elderen (16) plays Böhm's most famous work: a chorale prelude on Vater Unser in Himmelreich (the tune used in many churches as a musical setting of The Lord's Prayer). The piece features a very rhythmical accompaniment in the left hand and the pedal (played on the 16' 8' and 8' foundations respectively), upon which an ornamented version of the chorale melody is placed (played here in th...
J.S. Bach | Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ BWV639 | Old Church Amsterdam
Просмотров 4535 месяцев назад
Tim van Elderen (16) plays the historic Vater-Müller organ of the Old Church in Amsterdam, using the Sweelinq software. This organ is famed for having, according to many, the best Vox Humana in the entire world. I agree it is one of the best I have ever heard, and thought I would showcase it with Bach's famous chorale prelude on Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (BWV 639). This is one of Bach's...

Tim van Elderen (16) plays Bach's Fantasia in G major (BWV 572) on the organ of the Bovenkerk in Kampen using the Sweelinq software. The piece consists out of three parts (or movements): 1. Tres vitement - A fast keyboard exercise in only one voice, which tests the players technique in the fingers. In this performance it is played on the 8' and 4' flutes. 2. Grave - A slow and serious movement ...
Magnifique interprétation. Celibidache aurait beaucoup apprécié. 😉
@@martinrodolphe Merci!
Mille mercis pour cette magnifique interprétation. Vous jouez ce choral avec le même tempo qu'utilisait Pierre Cochereau, Jean Guillou et plus récemment Olivier Latry (dans son fabuleux Bach to the future). C'est impeccable. Bravo !!!
@@Mirage5BR Merci beaucoup!
@TimvanElderen Avec plaisir ; mon compliment est très sincère ! Meilleurs vœux pour la nouvelle année qui approche !

This Erbarme dich unser is not by me. Look at the one in my St Matthew Passion. JSB Deo Gloria
@@charlesbaer8681 An Albert Schweitzer fan I percieve? 😉
Well done, Tim, on this performance. I think it’s very clever to be able to improvise on a given tune.
@@MariaNew-cg1tw Thanks for the lovely comment! It is a skill I am currently trying to improve!
Prachtig!
Wonderfully played. Could you tell me which arrangement you are using? Thank you!
@@wadeflorida I am just using the ‘manualiter’ version found online or in Barenreiter. However: I play the C.F. an octave down on a second manual, and the lowest voice in the pedal.
Thank you for your response. Again, I think you play wonderfully and found your voicing and tempo inspiring.
@ Thanks for the lovely comment!
La difficulté de cette pièce vient de son extrême simplicité apparente. Belle registration sur un Cavaillé-Coll ? Hypnotique.
@@alainnouvel5613 Merci Beaucoup! Indeed the organ is a Cavaillé-Coll!
🙂
Yes. Lord please have mercy when half of us all over the world "know not what we do." (!)
Just amazing! Perfect registration and tempo.

Your registration and tempo are just perfect. Thanks for this!
Thanks for the lovely comment!
How lovely. ❤
Wonderful! Listening to your version sends goosebumps down my spine. You chose the right tempo. Now this piece reveals its beautiful soothing quality with that typical mixture of sadness and happiness that caracterizes our great composer J. S. Bach. Btw: you organists nowadays have awesome (!) instruments at your disposal at home.
@@andreasisenberg8700 Thanks for this high praise! Indeed it is a quality JSB posesses very much. As for my instrument: it is a real blessing: playing organs from other styles inspires new interpretations of music!
Werkelijk een sublieme uitvoering van dit meesterwerk van Bach, ontzettend mooi! Dank en complimenten!
@@janmc.mulder Dank Jan, voor deze comment. Er zit deze advent nog meer in de pijplijn…
prachtig thanks.
Very nice. Though, one needs a big acoustic like your sample set has to pull off the poignant pace. I have tried to play this very slowly but in a dry acoustic it can be dreadful to both play and listen to!
@@dougalderdice6796 Indeed that is the case! I also think that one can only use this slow pace if the solo voice is either a 16’ or 8’ pitch: a solo cornet just won’t cut it
That was so very, very beautiful; thank you. What a God-given gift of music you have.
@@MariaNew-cg1tw Thanks for the lovely comment! I will be taking requests for a Christmas Broadcast soon, so keep an eye on the announcements section of the channel!
The slow tempo speaks volumes in this work, it brings real poignancy. What a lovely interpretation, thank you!
@@MarcusReeves Thanks for the lovely comment, I do indeed think the tempo helps: I got the idea from Richards version on BiS.
Hi Tim, what a coincidence, I just updated Hauptwerk 8 to version 9 yesterday. I opened the Virgil Fox book and played "Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott" to test my new setup. Well here you are this morning playing that very piece. (Though much better than I.) Your played it perfectly and I enjoyed listening to you play. Of all the music I had learned, this one was my easiest sight reading piece. Thank you Tim. Keep up the good work and enjoy.
@@seanpeare-M0WSP Indeed that is the nice thing about it: it is not that hard, so you van focus all your efforts on the interpretation. Thanks for the comment!
@@TimvanElderen I wish Rhosmyedre (R.Vanghan Williams) was that easy, I am struggling with it. Looks easy but!!. Have you tried that one? Tim Ravalde said it was a hard piece to learn. Cheers.
@ I do not think I have ever even seen the score to that.. I must look it up. I can imagine it being not as easy as it sounds!
@@TimvanElderen yes please check it out. I can send you a copy. It's the music that is played at the end of VC.
@ No need for a copy, it is on IMSLP: it is a lovely tune is it not?
Very beautiful Tim! And I do love what you did with the solo line. Especially fitting for Remembrance Day. Somber but not sad. Just deeply respectful.

Beautiful sentiment for Remembrance Day.
Thanks Doug! I hope to upload another piece this weekend.
So beautiful- and what a Dutch Vox! ❤ I’ll have to learn this setting. Karg-Elert also has a really pretty one.
@@thewilliamtan Thanks William! Indeed the Vox is very Dutch, probably one of the best in the country (in my opinion). I will certainly have to check out the Karg-Elert: I have never played any of his music before!
That was so beautiful, Tim, well done. I’ve never heard that piece before. Thank you.
@@MariaNew-cg1tw Thanks for the lovely comment! It is a great piece is it not!
On Remberance Day we remember. A great hymn of assurance that the Lord is with us always. Noel Rawsthorne 400 last verses is a great resource for reharmonisation.
@@Margaret_Kirk Indeed it is. Interestingly enough we do not celebrate it on the same date here in Holland: the military deaths are remembered the 4th of May and the non-war related deaths the 24th of November. The Rawsthorne last verses are indeed epic!
We will remember them. Thank you Tim.
That was an absolutely beautiful rendition of ‘Abide with me’. I loved the expression and feeling you put into it; the reharm worked so well. Well done.
@@MariaNew-cg1tw Thanks for the lovely comment!
A true classic Tim! Wonderful!
@@philipaggesen Thanks a lot for watching! I hope to update some more content soon, if time permits.
Hello Tim from the godforsaken Texas Serengeti again. Just curious, where is this delightful little instrument located? I’m guessing it’s not in your house as you’ve shown your electronic gear before. Is it in one of the churches you play for?
@@bobbyhendley3084 The organ is in the St.Baafskerk in Aardenburg, Netherlands (just half an hour away on the bike from where I live when not at uni). I have not played a service there in a long time, but am still on retainer and play an annual concert in their international Bach series (this piece is from that)!
@@TimvanElderen I haven’t played in Bohm in ages, but it’s always very nice music. And very useable as service music in church. Great job.
@@bobbyhendley3084 It is indeed such beautiful music! I have never played it during a service though… never had the right time or organ
@@TimvanElderen Sometimes you just have to use the organ you’ve got, choose the stops as carefully as possible, and let your playing and expression of the piece make it the right time. Meanwhile, you will have opened some hearts and souls to music and beauty they had never known before. Thats our role, to open and change hearts. Even when it’s just the way we play a hymn. That’s how we open people more fully to the infinite wonder of God. Play always from that perspective and you too will be changed by your own music.
@@bobbyhendley3084 Thanks! I will do!
Great work, Tim! And a shout-out to Ben for the page turning and stop pulling, page turners never get any recognition ... unless they mess up!
@@dougalderdice6796 Thanks Doug! I shall convey it to Ben! Indeed page turning is difficult: I did print the pages in such a way that we could turn them per section, which did help a great deal.
A charming piece that I haven't come across before. Off to find the sheet music ... 😁
@@dougalderdice6796 You really did not know it?! It is played at about half of all organ concerts around here! The sheet music is on IMSLP!
