Not a review as such but more a video to prove that the NW-700 and other similar microphones can indeed yield excellent results on a tight budget. Especially when Audacity is used in conjunction. Phantom power is recommended with this mic. The whole kit with phantom power cost £36 delivered from Amazon UK. Kef Q Series Tweeter Repair Q15 Q35 Q55 Q65 Q75 Q85 Q95c, Point 1 & 2

A how to guide for the removal, repair and replacement of Kef's SP1347 or SP1446 tweeter as found in Kef Q15 through 95C range. Both .1 and .2 versions use the same and so may other duo concentric speaker types. NEW : A companion video I've made to detail the repair itself : ruclips.net/video/GKlcVzOCXGg/видео.html
the patience of a saint! 😂
Thanks for making the video. It helped me get an idea of what to expect.
Thank you for a detailed and concise video.
Which is warmer the q 35 or 15 2s
Is it the same for the uni Q30 ?? Red = low Frequency , blue = high Frequency ?? Mine was repaired and wired B-R-B-R
I've no experience with the Q30 but I'd imagine so.
Are the tweeters from Q series are interchangeable with C series? I have a c55 and one of the tweeters is non functional.
Hi I like your video you explained it very good. I have a question: In the magnet is there a ferofluid in the gap where coil enters the magnet? I have a Q35 speakers. Thank you in advance
Yes exactly. I didn't know this when I fixed the first few but learned that later on. Looks easy, I never bought any in. I'm pretty sure that replacing it will help with longevity. So if you do, clean the gap out well and then syringe/pipette a small amount into the groove. It spreads itself around. Good luck. Here it's done on other tweeters : ruclips.net/video/NG0Gf7LYAjo/видео.html
To anyone wishing to learn how to replace the ferrofluid, this guy made a video using other Kef tweeters : ruclips.net/video/NG0Gf7LYAjo/видео.html
Do you think the kef reference model 3 would be repaired the same way?
I'm not familiar. The only way to know for sure is to dig in and see. I also don't know if the Model 3 is the older one or the new £10k ones. The older model 3 looks to be of similar Q construction but I've not seen it's tweeters.
Will this work the same for an original Uni Q in a set of C55s (1989)?
I'm not familiar with that range sorry, but being Uni Q suggests they should be similar.
Do you know whether it's possible to remove the baffle on a Kef Q100?
Sorry, I never met the Q100's.
you have the patience of a saint ,, i will give it a go as buying replacement tweeters are ridiculously expensive , Thankyou :)
Mind the ferrofluid though. Often hard to defect, but old and sticky: should be replaced.
I personally never found a trace. Certainly not gunked up stuff. But anyway for those wanting to replace ferrofluid : It would sit in the groove in the magnet where the coil sits.
My PS1347 certainly have. When there is none originaly, the sound will not degrade with age. That is better in my opinion. Buy tweeters with ferrofluid depend on it for damping and cooling.
The ps1347 tweeter does have ferrofluid (I think all have) . After 26 years or so it hardens into a peanut butter like substance. Often hard to see. If you are lucky, it lets the voice coil move free and maybe it sounds even louder. I had one tweeter completely glued and it sounded pretty dull. So this should be removed and fresh ferrofluid should be applied to bring the performance up to specification.
Mate can u update the logo
I've not looked at modding GTA in ages. Also didn't know it needed updating.
@@nugsy71 still does now 2021
Thank you so much for this video. I recently bought a pair of 'spares or repairs' Q35.2's for a song and this might get the one dead tweeter working again. Just waiting on a new soldering iron to arrive.
I picked up a pair of 'spares or repairs' Q55.2's for peanuts too. I then sold my Q35.2's at a profit. Happy days!
GREAT VIDEO! Also, ferrofluid is starting to break down in older KEFS. Replacing the fluid will restore detail in many first and second generation uni-q speakers.
Congratulations, very good video. What type of adhesive have you used? Thank you very much.
Ha ha! Don't be copying me. I used silicone as it was all I had that would hold it at the time. I would go with something that won't set too quickly so as to be workable. In fact the silicone works well enough but I'm sure there are better solutions.
Thanks for this ! i have 2 questions : 1/ when you glue back, how do make sure that the coil is concentric with de magnet groove ? 2/ i had some oil in my tweeter (SP1542) did you have / put some ? thanks again !
1) The groove itself ensures it's concentric. . . 2) I had no oil / ferro-fluid in the tweeter I did.
Can I replace a tweeter from a hts2001 satellite speaker? Its not held in by a bot from behind? Thanks
Not a clue mate. I'm not a KEF expert, just a bloke that wasn't afraid to take his apart.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Ordinarily I would have just ordered a new tweeter (and they are not cheap!). After watching you’re video I found the same fault with the broken wire on my tweeter and managed a fix. The speaker now works perfectly. Well done and thanks again!
Great vid. Really enjoyed the break down difference between former mic and current mic. Just got a similar mic as this one (Tonor BM700) ..also featured in Podcastage review vids. (also got a Sabrent USB Audiocard to plug the xlr cable to usb port) I'm still figuring out the audio settings on Audacity. But it seems i'm gonna have to get a phantom power supply. The audio vocals are just too low. I'm crancking the volume all the way up just to get proper sound.
I bought kef q55.2 speakers litterally 5 minutes after using them the tweeters stopped working now I'm either looking for a new tweeter or seeing if I can repair them.
Da iawn butty. One question though, are these ELS enabled?
These are just skins for a pack that does indeed have ELS.
Lovely stuff ^^ Glad someone's finally made one for South Wales, keep up the good work man
Great vid there fella! Been driving me nuts ever since I moved house and the movers dropped them (Q15 Bookshelf) and they went all "fuzzy" and lost all the top end.. -like you say, anyone with a little common sense can do this mod/repair -and I really like my Q15's enough to do the fiddly work! Thanks again for posting..
Glad to help. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you for this nice video. Saved my money. I've done this with my kef iq5. Had a little problem with the solder joint between tweeter and golden wire. After i reassembled the speaker, it makes an unwanted noise at a frequency of about 210Hz. So i disassembled it again an saw that this solder joint hits the membrane of the "outer speaker". I corrected the solder joint and everything was fine!
20k views - Thanks all (except the four that thumbs downed!)
Hey, Nugsy71 - if you are still watching this thread - one question I'm not clear about - after replacing a voice coil or fixing the coil wire connection, how do you re-seat or re-stick the fabric dome to the plastic ring behind it?
@@joesmith7894 Sorry buddy I wasn't watching! I don't believe I used anything but the plastic housing. That clamps down on to it as far as I remember. It's been a long time since I did this & now I have another broken tweeter. If it's the same problem I may well update this video while I'm at it.
Thanks for the helpful Vid. I had a blown tweeter andI also could see where the fine copper wire had detached from the voice coil. I got a single strand of fine speaker wire to extend where the broken wire was on the voice coil and soldered directly to the terminal , works perfectly now! Didn't add any ferrofluid though as I didn't see any in the first place!
Great vid! Can anyone please tell me where I can get a new or s/h tweeter?
Thanks. Keep searching ebay. They do come up in the UK at least.
Hi! Any tip where to buy the tweeters? I got a pair of iQ30s but unfortunately found that the tweeters are not original and not OK. :/ Our local support tells me that it is only possible to buy the whole concentric set of bass+tweeter (for a fortune)...
I'd say just watch ebay. I've seen them come up - just not when you're looking for one!
my favory sound from to jamaica reggie steppa drum pan sound old school reggae.
I just bought a second hand kef q55 driver for my q15.2 it should still fit right? Ignoring the fact that it can handle an extra 50watts than the other q15.2 driver.
+James Moxon Yes. I see many advertised as replacements for the full Q range.
After all this time I've just learned that despite matching part numbers, the Q55 mid driver is not interchangeable with the Q15/Q35. The Q55 version is 8ohm, the others are 6ohm. It may work, it may not but will be out of balance with your other speaker.
Would there be any possible chance you could show me how to change the driver to the kef q15.2?
+James Moxon No, but I can tell you - take out the 15.1 & put in a 15.2. They're the same fit. It is that simple. I didn't change the crossovers or anything. TBH I just wanted the same silvery looking drivers as my other speakers.
Fair enough, thankyou.
Update : Q55 has an 8 ohm mid driver, the Q15 & Q35 have a 6 ohm mid driver. Physically the same size and part numbers but they do differ. For some reason I had previously read that as a Q15 to Q15.2 driver swap.
Thanks for Sharing this useful guide! both my Q15.1 tweeters are blown and I need to replace them. Ordered replacements from Kef USA and now will try this. Thanks again!!
Thank you very much for sharing brother :) Could you tell me where I can get a tweeter for a 15.2? That is approximately the couple? regards
Thanks for your comments everyone. Must apologise for the lack of music. It's been deleted for copyright issues.
Turns out he did mind lol
Interesting video but dude, next time check that the photos are in focus. If you can't get as close as you want and still be in focus, pull back a bit and remember that digital cameras have a lot of resolution so you can zoom in the image after.
Thanks! That definitely helped quite a lot. I was close to throwing my Q15.2 away but now they are up and running again. I just hope my soldering is any good.
Nice job, really appreciate it. After I got mine apart, wires were good and I could see the heat damage. Shouldn't have left my speakers at my girlfriends house, with her 2 sons. Note to self, "don't do that again." Thanks, Budd
Thanks for that. Never feel the need to apologise for your English. It's a second language. Most of us English speakers don't even bother to learn another language. Never had Mission speakers but I'd always recommend Kef!
hi there, last 2 week.i just repair my mission 735 tweeter.the reading ohm almost like the original ohm.+ - 0.01ohm.lucky me nothing happen while repair, cos my son 1years old++ is surrounding me(u know what kid gonna do right?) :-) it looks like this kef Q series more hard to repair then the mission.so i,ll keep stay with mission speaker forever....he he hee....but this really good vid dude.4.5star! sorry my bad english...
Hey Man! Thanks for the guide. That fix works great!
Thanks for your comments. I'm glad this has been of some use. When looking to repair mine I searched for this sort of thing and it wasn't there. You tube has helped with many other repair guides, so I took it upon myself to make this vid.
Okay people, I apologise. At approximately 8 mins & 30 seconds I should have said to solder the red and gold wires back to the posts on the driver housing. That should be obvious to anybody with common sense enough to take this on.
