How to improve your storyboards | Comics

Storyboards can be a challenging aspect for many Comic Artists, because in my view, it can often be the more creative part of the process. Why Perfectionism sucks for Comic Artists

    One of my main "problems", is that I tend to either come up with new ideas, that I want to partake, which leaves the other project on hold, and what is damaging is that if too much time has passed, it feels estranged to me as the momentum and vibe has been lost, or it has suddenly begun to bore me, that I need to do something else. On the positive front I tend to start anew with similar ideas, if the base idea still interests me. Happy to see you are implementing ideas, we have talked about over the years.

I hope you're able to find something sustainable for yourself. I feel blessed to have kept the momentum for so long with this rather ambitious project I was working on but... >_> For me, my struggle is the realisation that it will take me a quarter of my life to finish lmao.. alongside new ideas I guess. In order to export your long pages into 3 800x1280px pages, you need to go into File -> Special Export -> Export Webtoon From here you have a bunch of settings to work with. Make your 'output size' become a width of 800px, and your 'file export settings' can divide vertically, so you should input 1280px to end up with 3 pages If you don't mind it being 1 long page, you can just Export (single layer) jpg or png, and 'Specify the output size' to 800x1280px Also you don't need to adjust the 300dpi, its fine as is Hope that helps! I've put off drawing comics for a few years, thinking I needed to "get better". I finally made the jump and drew a 16 page comic for a contest. This was massively helpful for me, but I missed the deadline which demotivated me so much I barely drew for the next year. Earlier this year I tried again, and created two comics--one 9 page story, and a 6 page one. The amount of progress I made in paneling and overall art, without even doing a whole lot of practice outside these projects, just proved to me that the best way to get "good enough" is to actually draw comics. I still need to study things like anatomy and other fundamentals, but doing so while also making comics is far more motivating than just studying until I'm "good enough". It doesn't feel like a far away dream anymore. It feels attainable. and if you need it, try to find a contest like The Silent Manga Award if it motivates you and just start making stuff.

Practical experience doing the thing is priceless, and I'm happy you managed to get back into art again despite the loss I hear you about the study until you get good thing- after years of doing that it becomes a bit tedious knowing you could have been working toward something in that time. I agree that working on both simultaneously is the best way to build up skill and exp I didn't realise how much a contest would help me either, but it really got me into the mentality to finally finish something longer form/work on a script etc. It's a good initiator lol Thank you for your comment, I think you touch on many things people tend to struggle with

    It's a very good journey to not let the creation of your art stand in the way of the story unfolding. I'm glad to hear you have come to the realisation that makes you more able to focus on things of that are most important. You make a very important point with contemplating whether the details that the perfectionist tend to, like an overthinker renumerate endlessly with no real progress really are essential. Efficiency is not only a time subject, but also an optimisation of your art style that conveys what you want to express most efficiently. And I'd imagine that is also the progress you have, where the expression comes first, then the "fleshing" out. While looking at other artists can be a good inspiration and a great learning curve, I, personally think it is a good idea to not constantly compare yourself with others. It's your story, your art, and the more it is you, the more other artists will look at yours and think to themselves, "Oh, that is actually really cool, I love that line". Having said that, it is important that this will not be the operator for you. We can never satisfy everyone, but we will always satisfy someone. Lastly, now also apply the same liberation to your story telling, else you have just moved your perfectionism from the art creation to the story telling, and we wouldn't want that, now would we, ha :). Great video, Aeryma.

      @aeryma 4 месяца назад

      @janniknielsen9292 yeah of course the views in the video can overflow into the story and many other aspects of creation. Thankyouuu!! This was soo helpful as it finally got me to properly test out those settings cause lazy ol' me couldn't be bothered to read all the descriptions LMAO. Your art is gorgeous ♡ I'm just wondering how'd you get your cursor to be much bigger than the actual brush stroke, does it have anything to do with the pressure? I can't seem to tweak it enough so that it's like yours which seems comfier to use than the teeny tiny circle haha

    • @aeryma
      @aeryma 4 месяца назад

      @gibbydass you're not alone, I was also super lazy with that lol. Also thank you for the kind words 🙏 Ohh, that particular brush I'm using is one of the brushes I shared in the video (link in description). For some reason it makes the area bigger- I have no idea why, I keep looking at the settings and trying to figure it out lol The downside is you can mistake the position of where you line, but I just love how the brush works so I keep using it But there is also a cursor setting in CSP preferences that you can tweak if you wish (though idk if I've really changed anything- mines set to 'brush shape' for brush/pen/eraser)

      @gibbydass 4 месяца назад

      ohh i thought it'd be one of the brushes but after trying a single one (which happens to have a normal cursor lol) i stuck with it and kinda forgot about the rest... thank you sooo much haha

    Recently i uploaded my first ever comic to webtoon, and it keeps popping up saying set your content rating!? And I have got no idea on how to go about. So could you please help or make a short video on that. I tried searching different content creators on yt but got none related videos.

    • @aeryma
      @aeryma 5 месяцев назад

      Ah, I honestly had no idea about this problem until your comment, hehe. I've yet to upload on Webtoon officially, but I did look into it. You need to go into your Webtoon dashboard, click 'edit' on your series and then fill out the categories under 'Content Rating Self Assessment'. I think once you do this, you should be fine. Webtoons seems to have just updated this to cater to different age groups 🤷‍♀

      Happy to help! I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make the first thing we create a masterpiece, and forget that the great Comic Artists of today all had to start from somewhere, and grind out stories until they hit a diamond. Give it a try, you never know where it could lead- Good luck!

      @@aeryma i just thought of this but do you know what would be a good pixel size for webtoon and for a physical copy? i heard that some people had to redo there pages for a physical and i want to avoid that. Any help is apreciated ❤

    • @aeryma
      @aeryma 4 месяца назад

      @amusingkiwi9586 I haven't looked into the physical copy side, but I guess it would depend on what size print you want. E.g. A4 is 2480 x 3508 pixels so I'd say around 3000ish+px is a good target to aim for width wise, and the length would I guess be the equivalent value- (so maybe 3200x4800 for 1 page? But you'd obviously need to modify the panels for the prints dimensions when you convert it over) And for print we'd need >300dpi Unfortunately I don't know much about it yet, but maybe some day I'll do more research! (Probably don't rely on my lack of knowledge lol) But I hope there's some information online somewhere about this 🙏

    A tip that I picked up from a concept art channel is to make things as a 3D model to trace off of later/ use as reference. I was thinking this might be helpful specifically for your backgrounds, at least for ones that might show up for a decent number of panels or multiple times in the story. You're are is beautiful by the way, and the video was very nice

    • @aeryma
      @aeryma 5 месяцев назад

      @ArianaGrey-w9w yes that's a great tip! I did make some poor looking models for some of the major places, but nothing solid. I agree it's helpful and can probably save time long term, but it also takes effort for those less attuned to 3D xD hehe. I should heed the advice more tbh- so thanks for reminding me 😊 Also thank you very much!

    I was working on a 4 page 18 panels manga story but got overwhelmed cause after the Storyboarding I realize I was doing difficult compositions that I didn’t have the skill for. So I decided to condense the story to 1 page 4 panels as it is my first time ever doing this as a 1 year self taught artist. I was doing all traditional and there were times I wish I digital and resize it but had to erase it and draw the character again. Lmao.

    • @aeryma
      @aeryma 5 месяцев назад

      Nooo Dx I'm sorry you had to redo it Digital has its perks, but I think the experience and lessons you get from working in traditional are priceless. I wish I did it sometimes, but it definitely does take much longer One of my favourite mangakas still works traditionally. I honestly love the rawness of it. Digital is great, but you can tell it's digital sometimes hehe Goodluck! Your hard work will pay-off in the end c:
