Reconditioning a Delta Rockwell Table Saw
Hi friends! In this video (a slight departure from ham related content) I detail the process of reconditioning an old Delta-Rockwell contractor table saw. I purchased this saw to replace a smaller saw in my shop.

Ten-Tec 238...Really Broken?
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
I work on a Ten-Tec 238 high power antenna tuner I was told may have a bad switch. Turns out, not so! I take a look at the inside then hook it up to my transceiver and take it for a spin. Thanks for watching, please leave a like and Subscribe. It doesn't cost anything and really helps out the channel. Email: ahamlikeme@use.startmail.com Twitter: @a_ham_like_me

Kenwood TS-520 No Output Power - before capacitor replacement
Great Job! Thank You :)
Great video. I have one of these from my dad. Works great but the last few uses I noticed the blade not being square. I can’t see how to adjust the blade beside up/ down and tilt. Any hints or videos on how to do this on these bigger older saws?
i used 120 grit on a random orbit. it took the rust off and just barely gave the metal a shine on any high spots or dings... you can be pretty agressive, cast iron is HARD as far as sanding goes... i woulnd t go coarser than 120 or youre gonna start seeing swirl scratches... 120 grit just gives a nice matte finish even if you dig in till its bare metal... which takes some effort... i went about 5 mins and mine went from covered in rust to looking not new but like its been used and maintained since it was new... i also polished out the miter slots to match... i only used 120g nothing else... i have 80 and 220 and 320 also then just rubbed on some oil... i will wax it though, thats a good idea! nice work, looks good.
Very useful. Thank you. What would you use (ceramic insulators?)for a 300 ohm ribbon cable?? 4S7EF
Great question. I think it would depend on the diameter of the insulators. 300 Ohm cable (at least in the US) is very narrow; that is, the wires are held in the insulation very close together, making it a bit tricky to split them for attachment to large-diameter insulators. If you could mount the insulators very close to each other then, yes, I would use insulators. In my previous residence I simply drilled a hole in the wall, ran the 300 Ohm cable straight through, and sealed the hole with a little caulk.
@@a_ham_like_me Thank you. I am looking at insulators similar to ceramic feed through insulators used on the MFJ 4603 panels so that I could remove the cable from the outside and ground it when there is an electric storm. I have found on AliExpress, 4mmx30mm ceramic tube insulators and long length stainless steel 4mm screws with butterfly nuts at both ends that may suit my purpose. 4S7EF
Corrosion from humidity, check the big one watt carbon resistors on the PA board .
Thanks for your suggestion. The 520 has been running well since I replaced the capacitors but I will certainly open it back up and take a look at the carbon resistors.
Read all of K4EAA stuff, shame he passed! He was the Kenwood Hybrid expert. JohnBoyUtah KJ7TBR
I think without having original or similar high voltage switch, only method is to replace the switch with low voltage switch and drive Relays, major modification to the tuner. but, I might do it just heck of it. with JLCPCB pc boards is cheap now. AG6JU
Good choice with the saw. I have a similar 34-426. It is a very solid performer, and smooth cuts. It's not much different other than modern knobs for height and tilt. Yours is most likely 1.5hp motor because it's normally plugged into a 15a outlet on the jobsite. The (following) video is the best i've seen on tabletop restoration. I tried this method on 3 different saws, and it works great if you don't mind fine swirl marks. ruclips.net/video/aJ5WdqSeoho/видео.html
Thanks for the link to the video. I used to use pads like that in the auto shop but didn't think to use them for the table saw. I certainly won't mind a few swirl marks. :)
Keep at bro. I'm about at that speed today. Still practicing. Haven't yet made a contact.
I just bought this model off ebay.
Nice. I got a little too aggressive and broke the string that moves the needle so its on the bench for repair.
Next time you use that scotch brite pad on the table, set your jitterbug palm sander on top of the scotch brite pad. Makes things go so much faster :) I'm going to clean my old Rockwell saw up as well but I think I'll paint mine. Never cared for "patina", to me that always looked more like a fancy word for excuse to not paint, lol. I used to work in a factory with many machines that were 7 days older than water and every year just before the 2 week shutdown they'd have us re-paint every machine in the place...and it was always that old industrial green machinery paint, but the machines always looked sharp after the shutdown.
Will do, thanks for the suggestion.

Did you ever think of rubbing compound to remove any excess rust?
No, I didn't think of that. I'll give it a try when I clean/wax next time. It's a good excuse to pick up a new buffer. Thanks for the suggestion.
This is a very good how-to-do-it. These old Delta Contractor's Saws were made to be used for the long haul. The clean up of the table top was really good. I'd add one thing to any refurbing, and that is to use a good dry lube on the elevation and tilt mechanism. That way you avoid a build up of sawdust on the worm gears. All together, well done and happy sawdust making!
Thank you very much! Great advise regarding the dry lube. The saw is due for another cleaning and I will remove the wet line and replace with a dry lube.
I have the same saw. I broke the worm drive for raising and lowering the blade. Any ideas of where to buy one?
A quick web search did not turn up any options to purchase a new worm drive. I have a couple of suggestions. First, if you have the broken parts, find a reputable welder in your area and maybe they can be fixed. If not, try to find another Rockwell-Delta saw for sale you can use for parts. Perhaps one with a very rusty table top? Might be able to get a bargain.
The creator of this video probably has a 34-500 or 34-426. What you need to look for is Delta Bench Saw. Sometimes even labled a contractors saw, but in reality, this is a heavier and better BENCH saw. The diference is the one piece trunnion/blade housing vs the 2 steel rods that join the halves in a contractor saw. The Powermatic 62 and this Delta are similar and superior to a contractors saw. The good news about the deltas is they made them into the 80s with alll kinds of serial numbers and name plates (often being called a contractors special or 10" tilting arbor saw). Juat look at the guts and its very clear differences between the two. People dont know this and someof those delta "contractors" saws are absolute gems. Or the Powermatic 62, but those are hens teeth and carry the powermatic tax.
I could hear the excitement in your voice about finally owning a real table saw. That's a contractors saw and most times they have a 1 1/2 HP motor. With the care you will obviously give this, it should last the rest of your life and then the rest of someone else's life. Those old Delta's are great saws! Enjoyed the video! 😊 Phil
Thanks Phil. I have enjoyed it and have made some upgrades including a riving knife, thin rip jig, cross-cut jig, and featherboard.
Wax on, wax off! Seriously, though--very impressive restore.
Thank you!
Cool restore, congrats
Thanks! It's a good old saw.
Any new videos coming up? That was a neat project you were working on there.
Yes, I will have some more soon. I’ve been working on developing an antenna base for portable use which has taken all of my time. Thanks for the reminder to get more content out! 😀
Puppy being a dog….. lol
Timely, this is one of my weekend project ideas.
Excellent! It's held up well over the last few months.
1st comment here 😅
What key is that?
It's a Chinese key that was given to me with the Kenwood TS-520 radio I bought several years ago. It's better quality than the ones you may find on the market today.
My dude is either having an earthquake or shivering because it's too cold 😂
Shaky hands for sure! I need to hold my camera steadier. I was a little out of breath from exercising but that's no excuse. :)
Keep hamming it up! People ask me what I do with ham radio on the weekend? I tell them untangle stuff.
So true...my second name is spaghetti wrangler. :)
This is exactly what I was looking for but I wish it was even longer!! Increase your stats = "promosm" !!
Your like me, only a small desk for my radio gear, and half that again for my repair bench you guys see more of. 🙂
Yes, we do the best with what we have. You produce a lot of good videos in your small space!
@@a_ham_like_me I try, tho there is a TON of other channels that produce video way more interesting them me.... but then again, i enjoy uploading content for folks to watch, some of it is rather boring i have to admit, but i have also uploaded a lot of good content that people enjoy very much. I just do it, because i enjoy the hobby and enjoy sharing it with everyone else as well. 🙂
Keep the good work friend!
Thanks for the visit and sub!
Nice
Thanks
Desk looks great, looking forward to see what you do with the rest of it!
Thanks! It's in progress. I just finished up the window pass-through today...video to be released tomorrow.
My audio was cut off at the end...meant to say "and coax." :)
How did this work for you? I'm experiencing similar issues. Thanks!
Did replacing these caps bring your output power back?
Picked up a used 520. I have output on cw but not on ssb. Still checking microphone, and will check capacitors. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!
Hey tell grace I said hi
Very nice little project. When you need it and can't purchase it, build it! The way things use to be done and what the hobby should be based on. Congrats on a job well done. :-)
Keep an eye on transistors leads, they can also rust and fall apart. I got a Cobra 138xlr here that had a bunch of transistors with the leads rusted off.
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep an eye out for that.
Nice old radio. good luck with the repair. :-)
Thanks!
Love thunder, great video!
