Yamaha needs to write a piece of software for this. We're not in the 80's anymore.
Right?! A little software window where I could just drag and drop samples would change everything about this thing for me.
dude, you are so cool
Aw dang, thanks ☺️ Just doing to lords work, pressing buttons and making whacky noises 🔉🔉🔉

Love this Squishy Groooove : )
I live for the squish! 🪼🪼🪼
Wow
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
0.5 speed was cool… but 1.5 speed brought some instant DNB/Jungle energy 😁
Haha that’s my performance after a few club mate
Highly recommend playing this at .5 speed. Sounds dope and sheds a whole new light on the playing.
Whaaaaaat you’re totally right it does sound cool. What a crazy way to see my technique, I’ve never even thought of doing that. Thanks for the tip! 🤯
nice groove brotha! that was nursty! I wish you'd post a vid of how you chopped this and your method for choke groups
Good news! I’ve already made those videos 🙌🏽 My choke groups honestly don’t get very complicated. I rarely use more than 3 groups. I break down my choke groups around the 3:50 mark in this video. ruclips.net/video/ReMeKYDD94s/видео.html&si=X5LBsqG0pWnBcisS Most of the pads in this rack were filled with VSTs to make wubs which I break down in this video. ruclips.net/video/SkICH3RYsE4/видео.htmlsi=f3YvbccUSPvD5JO_
Cool
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Nice, have you jammed or you had the song structure in mind?
I have jammed on this a bunch of times before recording this, so I know the general vibe, but it’s still all improvised. I kind of treat it like bucket drumming or jazz drumming. Just finding groovy pockets and moving around the kit.
Love your vids. This was great.
Yo, thanks so much! I’ve got a loooot more on the way so this is very encouraging 😇
Not much FGDP-50 config videos on YT yet, so this is pretty useful!
Yeah it makes sense because navigating its interface is kind of a nightmare. But glad I could help out! 🙏🏽
Love this! Never thought to put the VST into a drum rack (which would unblock my synth pattern explorations I do) as I usually rely on the keyboard to riff on. Also how do you balance having too many instances of VSTs duplicated with just automating the sound variations in a singular patch? I think some values can't be automated as well (like Octave up/down) but I assume you would automate when possible vs duplicating? Cheers!
Yes! It’s such a different way to approach soft synths, and I love it. You actually can automate octave on most synths! You just need to map it to a macro first. But yeah, sometimes I automate macros (I’ve been playing with expression pedals to move macros with my feet while I’m drumming) but sometimes it’s nice to just have a whole different sound on a pad. It might even lead to whole new automations! I think it just depends on your workflow and what you’re trying to make.
I’m taking your waffle boat idea. 😂 💯 agree with so much of what you said. Having practical steps are what keep me going when I run into a block or when my brain just refuses to work on a project. Just the other day I was working on a video for a client. It was a slog until I was trimming out some filler words. I started playing with just the filler words, duplicating the one second clip several times and altering the speed and tone. It’s a wacky time now but gave me the fun and enjoyment of play that made me power through the rest of the video without issue. Love your vid. I’m subbed. 💪🏼
Nice! I love that you’re giving yourself the space to play and experiment like that. Definitely a great way to stay in flow when things get too challenging. 🌊🌊🌊
this popped up in my recommended and it was kind of exactly what i was looking for these days. i’ve been struggling with sharing my time between so many potential projects in different spaces and i end up just feeling paralyzed by choice. the supercategories concept and reframing feels like a breakthrough. i also have to say i really loved the casual and earnest vibe of the video- i think many of these kinds of coaching style videos can feel very inauthentic and sales-y. keep doing what you’re doing, dude.
Wow I’m so glad the video landed in front of you! This is exactly why I’m making these videos. Thanks so much for sharing, it makes all these hours of script writing and editing feel totally worth it. 🤓🙏🏽 let me know if any of the tips help lift any of that paralysis for you! And stay tuned because this video actually has a part 2, but I wanted to see if this topic actually resonated with anyone before I release it.
Hapyy to stumble upon this 🙌🏼 useful wisdom
It has just come up with people around me so many times lately that I figured there must be other people out there working through the same things. Glad you found it useful!

Awesome video dude
Yo thanks mate! Hope it helps you throw down some phat beats
useful stuff. cool video. thanks. i didn't know that's what polymath meant
Thanks! Yeah I’ve been finding a lot of research papers on polymathy with tons of examples of people who are really good at tons of diverse things and it’s been so inspiring. Hope the video helps you balance some cool stuff!

@@hawtcocomusic the actual drumming is super rough and random
thanks for listening! yeah it feels pretty weird hearing such electronic sound design humanized without any quantization. And the randomness throws me off sometimes too lol but it’s one of my fav quirks of this particular drum rack.
@@hawtcocomusic it needs more humanizing .... sounds rough
Hey, cool performance! I'll try this rack for sure 😎
Aw hell yeah! Stoked to hear how it sounds under your fingers!
@@hawtcocomusic yeah just give me time to get the hang of it 😅
Is loading custom kits the big reason to pay for the 50? Or do you use the other features?
My favorite part about it is the onboard speaker. It feels super freeing to be able to play without being tethered to a laptop. But there are also MPCs that are even better at that sort of thing. I think the main selling point for this is the unique button pad layout though, there aren’t any other pads anywhere with this particular ergonomic setup. Which in itself is a bit of a pro and a con at the same time.
Yamaha sells the fgdp30 model that's 100 cheaper but has some wacky voice operated menu instead of a screen and fewer buttons. The 50 has backing track features i won't use but i think the screen lets you tweak individual sounds. The 30 also doesnt have that usb stick port. I would love to save 100 bucks but i dunno.
@@jasonjayalap I haven't gotten my hands on the 30 yet so its hard to say. But I'm sure you'll have some fun either way. :)

Great video! Seems like a piece of gear in desparate need of an editor app :D
Thanks! Yeah the UI is probably my least favorite part about this device. But after swimming through the M8 like you do it should be a piece of cake!
Thanks so much for this Hawt coco!
It’s my pleasure! Hope it helps you make something epic :)
Very inspiring, how the sound quality for you? Could use this live/ or for studio recordings do you think?
The onboard speaker is pretty decent, but for a studio recording I would either record directly onto a flash drive OR use the audio out port and record directly into a DAW. At that point it’s pretty much just recording WAV files, so definitely studio worthy!
Thanks, keep it up :)
Thanks for this, do I need my flash drive in at all times once the kit has been saved? Or does it save to the device? 😄
That first step of assigning where we go through menu->files->allsamples->save will save all your samples directly onto the device. You can remove your flash drive after that. In the video I kept mine in because I was also recording my playing onto the flash drive. Hope that helps!
Dream team 🔥
It’s accurate because people still sleepin on us! 😴😴😴
S tier tutorial right here! Might have to build my own kit for this buddy 🤖😁
Ooo it’s calling your name for sure. Imagine the park sessions with this guy dialed in.
I wonder if someone has made a virtual fgdp for tablets using touchOSC or something like that. Sick dabbled shade in that garden btw.
Ooo yeah you’re right I guess with a touch screen you could make any kind of layout your heart desires! That’s cool, I’m gonna let that simmer in the back of my mind lol
Your channel rules ♥️ thanks for going above and beyond
You are incredibly welcome! I’m putting everything I’ve got into these videos, it’s very cool that you can see that 🙏🏽
Do you sample sperm whales?
thanks for sharing this! Are you using samples for the Basses or is a Synth (or more synths)? i´m experimenting with several Synths on differnt pads, but it uses more CPU the more synths i use
Yes! I’ve run into this issue as well. This particular kit started out with a bunch of synths inside the drum rack. But eventually I recorded out a bunch of variations of each synth. I use a pitch midi effect, random midi effect and a simpler in slice mode to move through the different samples to keep the variation. Cuts down on CPU quite a bit!
Appreciate you homie!
Aw, I appreciate you right back!!
Yo how do you go about placing your drum sounds?? Is that layout just what you eventually found out works for you or is that common in the finger drumming community??
I have a background in jazz drum set and marching percussion before I got into all this electronic stuff. So this is just the style that I’ve personally developed. From what I’ve seen with other finger drummers it seems to be pretty unique. And it’s definitely different than all the “finger drumming courses” and semi-official technique guides I’ve seen. But it works for me! I have a whole video on my layout if you wanna check it out! It’s called “How to arrange your Ableton drum rack” ruclips.net/video/dtx9RS7xC6s/видео.htmlsi=ExoL_RhBJVvrcS4B
🔥🔥🔥👊🏾😎👊🏾
🙌🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽🙏🏽
Damn man you killing it 🔥🔥🔥
1000 thank yous 🙏🏽 This kit is just super fun to play around with!
Super sweet man! Curious- What percentage of your playing in this song is improv? Like when I play I find some themes, rhythms, etc, then improv but first I get bare bones like the key, general groove, a few hooks etc.
I would say it’s in the ballpark of 100% actually! I design all the sounds first and then embed them into an Ableton drum rack. I try to let my improvised playing react and interact with the sounds themselves. I let the textures and the layout of the sounds kind of evoke different rhythms for me. On this particular kit I’ve played it enough times to get a feel for it, so it feels a little less than 100% improvised just because I already have a sense of what sounds good. But it’s still a little different every time, and I’m still finding new patterns and styles with it!
so you play a drum loop and finger drum the bass shots yeah?
Each pad has multiple chains of drums, cymbals, and basses and chords, so there are actually no loops! I tend to feel kind of like I’m only playing drums, but then for example a hi-hat pad will also be layered with a bass wub, or the crash cymbal will also unleash some chords or atmospheres. It’s a really fun way to play!
@@hawtcocomusic aaaa I get it, thats kinda smart! big up
Coco + Minitaur = 💣💣💣
I know, I need to get on that thing more often!
So awesome! I really enjoyed your performance at the Sample Music Festival too by the way!! :D!!

I subbed for that yamaha finger drum tutorial
Nice! I am actively working on that one and it is on its way down the content conveyor belt 🙏🏽
Hey I finally dropped that Yamaha video if you haven’t seen it yet! Turned out pretty good if I do say so myself 🤠 ruclips.net/video/HFXEKmGeW-A/видео.html
@@hawtcocomusic Let's GOOOO!
Hey man, keep this shit going, you got mad skills. Ive just watched you cover 5 unique styles that individually are subtle and nuanced and you smashed ALL of them. I've been djing longer than you've been alive and it took me all those years to learn what you covered in this video in 10 mins. Mad respect from someone who knows more than u, but is awed by your skills and mastery of music theory and simple hands on implementation for new artists finding their sound. I'll find you through your online content. Keep bangin' Coco. You are elite.
Yo thanks so so much homie, appreciate every word. 🙏🏽
Hey Coco, it's me ur biggest fan. I wasn't bullshitin that I appreciate your skills because I'm back here on your channel as I begin my journey into music production. My background is as a dj so I have all the knowledge of style and genre, but I'm getting into more subtle aspects that are over my head. For example. I'm trying 2 diff styles of music production, 1 is traditional laptop w a DAW(I've got fruity loops and traktor) and midi keyboard. The other is more ... Unique. I'm doing full production on IPad only. With that said , I am a true believer in beatmaker 3 and IMPC PRO 2 on IPAD for laying down decent tracks . Now I'm much farther behind the learning curve of IPad because I'm still getting used to no knobs. Different software choices. iOS vs windows / android. I am slower on IPAd at the moment but In the long run I see much bigger upside to doing iPAD only music production. But here is where I need your help. I do see the wisdom in having an external unit drum machine like you play on, to give the subtlety that IPad can't give. My question is, is the improvement in quality it the flexibility of the drum machine itself, or is it in the software you run (beatmaker 3 and IMPC PRO 2 are both respected but how many IPad producers are actually out there?)is it the machine or the software that is the real cause of better output and tracks? I'd like to get your opinion on the matter if you don't mind. (IE invest in external hardware or pay the crazy $ for the software like Ableton , cubase , pro logic etc) Thx Coco. Sorry for the length of this message.
@@arsan9933 Nice, the iPad setup sounds like it could be pretty fun! Both hardware and software are endless rabbit holes that you can sink an infinite amount of money and time into. I would say what’s more important than both of those is your personal creative vision, style, and musical ability. The hardware and software are just tools to express the ideas that you have. So someone could have $500,000 worth of gear and make some garbage, while someone else might make some truly epic music on a mobile iPhone app. With that said though, I have found Ableton to be an amazing DAW for quickly sketching out ideas and making tons of quick edits and explorations. Also anything that you can get your hands on your sound will help with getting more embodied and physically connected to your music, which will always make it feel and sound more human and interesting. If you want to get into professional music production I think something like an Akai MPK Mini and Ableton Live Lite would be an incredible starting point and you can build from there as specific limitations come up for you. Hope that helps! 💖
